- Botswana 2012: Chobe river. Coordinated crossing of the Chobe river by a family of elephants. Three elephants go ahead and if everything is safe leaving the rest of the family in a long line behind each other.

The elephants were waiting for a ok ( no problem) from their matriarch only then did the rest of the elephants started to cross the river...Super intelligent elephants as always!!!

Greetings from Africa the matriarch always stays with the very young and small elephants she guards them like they were her own. Elephants always use the same route the first two that went into the water were young adult elephants who couldn't wait to get in the water. Young elephants behave like humans in so many ways.

Love this! They seemed tired to me as they emerged from the water. I was worried about the little ones! How can they know that the little ones will have enough stamina not to drown? I wonder how they communicate plans to each other, or if the matriarch just throws a signal and they all follow. Beautiful!

The other side of that river is Namibia. Elephants go there in the day to graze and return to Botswana at night for protection from poachers in Namibia. Not sure what they will do now that Botswana has stupidly decided to allow elephant hunting.

Such a big river with crystal clear water. Congratulations Botswana for environmental conservation. Our Mara river is almost dried and the water is brown with soil; however efforts have been made to conserve the mara ecosystem by reforestation upstream.

So, how does the crocks know not to attack the younger babies or even normal big elephants in general under water or while in the water? It seriously marvels me. I ask cos they often attack the wildebeests and the buffaloes etc. everytime they make an attempt to cross.
