    I LOVE the way Brandon analyzes and explains the stroke. It is perfectly aligned with my Tri coaches approach. I watch his videos when I’m away from the pool to “keep my head in” the stroke and do visualization training. These videos have helped me immensely and shaved serious time off of my long distance swims. Bravo Brandon!

    Thank you so much ! This video is excellent. What I notice is the hand entry into the water, coincides with the contra lateral arm pull through the water and contra lateral leg kick ! I think learning to coordinate those three elements while giving a good rotation for hydrodynamics is key to an efficient freestyle. Thank you again !

    Thanks for posting this and all the other great content you post. I started lane swimming about 6 weeks ago, and I have a question:
    You mention during the kick that our toes need to be extended like a ballerina. Should the toes be kept rigid during the kick or relaxed to create more of a “fanning” motion?

    Dude i've been following you for a year now and you're online videos have managed to make me love swimming! And love getting better and better with every tip! Now shameless question incoming, i've got a real problem with timing my kick with the opposite hand entry, i tend to do the kick with the same hand entry and i CANNOT figure out how to fix that!!!! any drill you can suggest that can change my damn muscle memory!?!!?

    There's one thing that surprised me a bit. When he switches breathing sides he does it immediately. I mean he takes a breath to the left side and then immediately takes another breath to the right side. I imagined I would do that being out of breath as I usually am after a few lengths 😉 but seeing a pro doing that is quite interesting.

      He also does it just before his flip turns, I've even saw him taking 3 consecutive breaths before turning. You can watch and see in the Kazan SC 1500m record video. I guess, for him, the pros of more oxygen outweighs the cons of rotating instantly 🤷🏻

    Thanks Brenton. I noticed he flattens his hand just before lifting if out for recovery, after it's finished its propulsive phase. Is that just an advanced technique? Ive not heard you mention it.

    So Brenton at the end of his arm extension he seems to rotate palm and forearm in towards his midline slightly as he is initiating the catch. Meaningful? Or simply the way he initiates his catch?

    I noticed something that answered a BIG question about the speed/motion of the hand during the pull.I would like to see this in greater detail with bigger bubbles. I tried to observe a bubble moving with the current and the hand moving in a slightly faster motion. There is a sweet spot where if the hand moves too fast there is a loss of grip on the water, too slow and you don't maximize the thrust. When swimming I try to feel the water on my hand and try to judge that sweet speed by the flow of the water through my fingers. I see in the video the hand and a reference bubble and their relative velocity. I would like to see more regarding this technique. Thanks

    The hand entering phase where his hand is near the top of the water /not beneath the shoulder…. and yet still be in perfect form was new for me . As when I first looked at him I thought it was an error. But there you go , but goodness…. How long are his arms !?!? He looks very relaxed . Great example and great points to take on board !     This might be only my impression but it looks like sometimes he does something like “double” kick with left leg. Or more like sometimes it’s a “full swing” and sometimes just small movement. I’m wondering if this is for a reason or maybe it’s because of this flume thing or personal preference?

    Hello coach, I think what you said about the lift is correct, the water in the tank hits back with big waves, if you want to keep your head lower, you really need to do that, but I think from his swimming technique , his technology itself is that the body needs to be flatter, defined as EVF, this technology may use lift force is indeed a very good choice

    Brenton: one thing that I didn't see you cover was the shape of his hand and was wondering if you could clarify that? His hand looks very loose and his fingers are apart. Other swimmer's hands are the fingers are tight together. In my mind, it makes sense to keep them together to keep water from slipping between the fingers. Could you elaborate please?

    Interesting that his left hand does a curved bird claw shape just after entry some times. I would correct that. Interesting that he doesn't use the gallop style for swimming. This is very uncommon with men swimmers.
    As for the kick, some thing I have never seen pointed out is that the hips rotate as one unit, they are not capable of rotating independently. The shoulders on the other hand, rotate independently with the pulling arm initiating the shoulder rotation, the hips rotate, then the recover arm finishes the shoulder rotation. The front side kick (better than up and down so you don't have to change terms for back stroke and freestyle) always anchors on the pulling arm, right as it enters the power phase of the pull. This is most evident in the 2 beat kick pattern. To me, this is the best indicator that the shoulders drive the hip rotation, and not the other way around. This is also why there is a 'surge' kick as some have called it, or a power kick as I have called it. The #1 kick is the power kick because the shoulders drive the hip rotation. In ground based sports that use body rotation, the feet drive the hip and upper body rotation, either by both feet being anchored on the ground or by stepping forward/into a stance to drive the upper body rotation. The feet have nothing to anchor on to drive the hips and upper body when you are in the water. Add to that that in swimming, the power part is the pull, not a push or swing or punch.

    You can keep a rhythm with your stroke and kick by saying one two three four five six power on the one and the four. Or, you can just say one two three on the left and one two three on the right with power on the three then rotate.

    Always trying to train the high elbow technic but quite complicated for me. Sometimes only in the opposite arm from where I am breathing. Mostly impossible for me :(

      Your rotation is likely the issue. If you are rotating properly you are pulling down and bending your elbow but should be rotating to where it's no different then you extending your hand above you head and then letting it fall as you rotate your body where your elbow is bent and coming down over the pecs. However, if you've always swam with a more traditional sprinter stroke it can feel pretty awkward. Slow it down and use a pull buoy. Exaggerate the rotation and see if it feels more intuitive.

    Hip rotation is limited to avoid drag and to keep body as much flat as possible. Shoulder rotation should be similar to hip rotation???
    How do you control that?

    It looks like he has (what I thought was) tape on his fingertips. Especially his left index finger. Are those bubbles? Why don't they get washed off like the other bubbles? Just a trick of the light? Is he going so fast it's causing cavitation on his fingertips?

    I just watch these videos like... Man it must be nice to swim in an infinity pool.. But if runners don't count the treadmill as real running. What does that mean for an infinity pool? Or are most of us just too poor to afford one to make it a topic? 🤔

      Ya, Phelps claimed he developed a flawless freestyle with one... While endorsing his line of Swim Spa. It let's you get into a remarkable rhythm everyone claims. But if it's just blowing jets past me, how does it change muscle activation? I run on treadmills for recovery runs only. Why? Over 20% less hamstring activation. It's literally allowing my hamstrings to do less work and rest while the belt/platform gives my joints a break. Just a thought I had is all

      I think a big difference between the treadmill and the infinity pool is the resistance. As the air is not moving around you when running on a treadmill you won't have the same resistance as running the same pace outdoors. This way you can achieve faster pace on the treadmill. In the infinity pool the medium around you (water) is moving and creates the same resistance as in a real pool. So The difference between infinity pool and real pool should be smaller than the difference between treadmill and track.
