You know, as a kid, I used to make fun of this cinematic a lot. But rewatching this as an adult, it's really, really grown on me. There's a certain charm to it, especially the snapping, quick movements. There's also the old art style of the animation, and while others may criticize it, I do like it a lot. It takes a while to grow on you, but I do find this animatic really good now. Honorable mentions to everything from 0:33 after. Love it.
The animation itself is gorgeous but the faces are very strange to me. Each time I watch it I start to like it a little more, though. It's really interesting.
After all this time I still don't feel it. I imported the game and felt that they did better with Guilty Dragon than this really. If I were to complain about many things I think I would complain about how they went with manga format for the story telling since all others games aside from the Guilty Dragon and New World, all others were animated making them feel more alive and having to force the push time event for the Rengeki which felt more like playing ping pong with the enemies. Overall the game was quiet good and still made me desire more games but I'd ask for a little upgrade on the main story animation if anything.
At first, I was surprised to see the .hack characters look like Tekkon Kinkreet characters... but after watching this opening many times, it really REALLY grew on me. The backgrounds and atmosphere in the second half of the opening are really cool. :)
Always been a fan of the .Hack series, but I must say, the art in this definitely leaves something to be desired. I wonder why they switched it up, GU was so awesome too.
I adore seeing all of the people whine and complain about the art style. This studio, Studio 4C, has done some amazing works such as Tekkonkinkreet as well as The Animatrix. While the style is definitely odd, what with the tiny mouths and wide eyes, it's so memorable and unique. It does take getting used to, but look at their fluid movement, the stylistic simplicity, how much more zany they move during action. But no, we're all so "in love" with the same bland giant eyes, spiky hair, giant mouths from everything that's popular such as Fairy Tail and Bleach and Naruto and especially One Piece, that we forget to admire the underdog styles. Now, I am not bashing people who like the classic anime style with the big shimmering eyes and such. To each their own and I am glad you enjoy it. But please, try to find something else to do with your time rather than bash the creativity of Studio 4C. Heck, use the time you take to complain about it and try coming up with your own unique style if you hate it so much.
i agree , the first time i watched this it was strange but every time i watch again , the style grows a little more in me , i also like the "sugoi desu" style but i just think is amazing how this way of drawing transmits so much expression through so little details...its adorable.
That's probably what you watched but I guarantee your whining ass that they've seen different art styles of anime. They're only saying it's weird. You're taking it to heart like a true weaboo scumbag. Everyone looks depressed that's what fuck it up. If you wanted realistic then look no further Berserk,Big O, Cowboy BeBop, and so much more do the same style as this opening. Shit look at any studio ghibli movie it's strongly influenced and styled by the same way the artist at ghibli uses. Howls flying castle, Grave of fireflies, Princess mononoke,etc.
I love that Kuhn, Atoli and Pi are dancing in the middle of a busy town square! It looks so fun. I'd want to do that. If other people were doing it too, it'd be fine. I've seen people dancing in the middle of crowds in Japan before; I wonder if they do it to advertise, or just because it's fun and exciting. Thank you for uploading this! I love the song. Took me a bit to get used to the art but now I like it a lot! Haseo still looks scary though....but that's normal right? XD
And looking at gameplay and story this makes me Sad. Protag is SO COOL looking. but instead of this unsettling battle theme they go for comedy in rengekis and fanservice. Evil haseo TOD is a cool idea. But man i feel they coulda done so much better

The Digimon movie and Summer Wars kind of had this type of non-shaded animation. Atoli and Pi dancing and singing was kind of cool and funny :) And I saw Hachiko in Shibuya at :41!
I really like it!! Maybe the character design doesn't look likes the anime one but the song and the character's moving are so good!! The animation it's not focus on the face of the characters but on their moves!!!
For those of you who are thinking about dissing this art style, I highly advise you think again. Think outside the norm of what anime usually looks like. There are a lot of elements used that makes this a potential anime creation. This video has incredible movement, breathtaking angles, and a unique art style and I would like to see more of it in the anime world. Who ever made this, should keep going.
I absolutely love how the characters, all of them, are actually drawn to look Japanese. It took some serious skill to revisit old characters to update their westernized appearance to be more accurate. Whether you like it or not, this is closest to what these characters would actually look like. I even played LINK and its insane to me ive never seen this.

The best outcome is we can play as all partner characters. Skills of the same class has the same animation anyway and the only unique animation could just be the Rengeki/Cross Rengeki. I really wanna have Kite to beat an angry Haseo.

No, the problem is SAO *needs* harems to be good, whereas .Hack created interesting, relatable, and multidimensional characters, an intersting, complex, and multidimensional world for those characters to inhabit, and an interesting, thrilling, and multidimensional story that the characters go through in the aforementioned world...before everyone realized "Hey, it'd be great to have a harem with girls like Tabby and Atoli, wouldn't it?". As for Asuna...I don't see her charm other than her long hair and her outfits usually consist of short skirts, thighhighs, and possible midriff revealing tanktops underneath her jackets...which in my opinion, would suit every *actual* waifu in SAO better.

Whoever came up with the idea of using this animation style, deserves to have a cartoon anvil dropped on their heads. Imagine this same opening, without the dead fish eyes, and instead using the quality from any of the high quality Dothack anime.

@KONPALegendz .Hack//The Movie will hit Japan theaters Jan 21st 2012...give it a good month or 2 after that then maybe it might be subbed, as for the game most likely might be on ps3 since the game will be in high 3D graphics and Cyber Connects has a good rep with Sony game, might not even be translated and sent over seas like Link. (Interesting fact, every Hack generation has a Kite character design in some way).
@BonkuriTokio112 I guess it's a message in the art work. Thrust into battle, there's no time to smile, cry, or even blink. Friends become enemies, enemies become friends. Kill before you're killed. In a neverending battle between two sides, the only side you can truly rely on is your own. That's what I got from the artwork from this opening, anyway. But I'm glad the singer from G.U. is still around.
Just purchased this game although i cannot understand japanese the gameplay is addicting although repetitive at times its still an awesome game! A must buy for dot hack fans.

The first time I saw this opening, I flinched at the sight of it because I was not expecting that art style, especially since the rest of the game stays on the original track. Sure, you can say there are good qualities about this opening, and it might deserve a chance to flourish, but there is something to said about consistency.
this style represents the concept of RL in constract with the anime were all used to representing the in game world, is to tell them apart from whats real and whats game in this "world"

One Piece is definitely not typical anime art style. Oda's art takes some getting used to.

As for Asuna...I don't see her charm other than her long hair and her outfits usually consist of short skirts, thighhighs, and possible midriff revealing tanktops underneath her jackets...which in my opinion, would suit every *actual* waifu in SAO better.
@Zhakaron There's also the Legend of the Twilight series, of which the manga is the acceptible canon and the anime had some artistic rights. Main character from Legend of the Twilight: Shugo, both versions.

Whoever came up with the idea of using this animation style, deserves to have a cartoon anvil dropped on their heads. Imagine this same opening, without the dead fish eyes, and instead using the quality from any of the high quality Dothack anime.

.Hack//The Movie will hit Japan theaters Jan 21st 2012...give it a good month or 2 after that then maybe it might be subbed, as for the game most likely might be on ps3 since the game will be in high 3D graphics and Cyber Connects has a good rep with Sony game, might not even be translated and sent over seas like Link. (Interesting fact, every Hack generation has a Kite character design in some way).

i find the art style to be highly unusual...in a good way. i liked.
Just purchased this game although i cannot understand japanese the gameplay is addicting although repetitive at times its still an awesome game! A must buy for dot hack fans.

@candiigurl7893 Even if you say that, it still makes me wonder why they went ahead and diverged from the normal art style of the series. The first time I saw this opening, I flinched at the sight of it because I was not expecting that art style, especially since the rest of the game stays on the original track. Sure, you can say there are good qualities about this opening, and it might deserve a chance to flourish, but there is something to said about consistency.
