I thought it was because the heavier the plane, the more the fuel needed, so you're essentially subsidising the cost incurred by the airline if you have overweight bags. But some people probably have fairly underweight bags, so surely it averages out? I don't know 😩
As much as I hate to say James is right about that being a scam it actually is and has nothing to do with gravity at all as most passenger aircraft carry thousands of extra pounds to transport cargo in addition to passengers and luggage thus airlines view that space as another source of revenue they will even allow very hazardous cargo as well. I agree. When singer Aaliyah died years ago it was because of overweight/too much luggage on the aircraft she boarded.
I thought it was because the heavier the plane, the more the fuel needed, so you're essentially subsidising the cost incurred by the airline if you have overweight bags. But some people probably have fairly underweight bags, so surely it averages out? I don't know 😩
As much as I hate to say James is right about that being a scam it actually is and has nothing to do with gravity at all as most passenger aircraft carry thousands of extra pounds to transport cargo in addition to passengers and luggage thus airlines view that space as another source of revenue they will even allow very hazardous cargo as well. That being said James should stop feeling entitled and follow the same rules as the rest of us.

I think the charge for heavy luggage is to deter people from having heavy luggage. Yes, they can handle a few extra that weigh more - but they can't have EVERYONE having heavy luggage.
