Philips Hue LED Bulbs - Wifi Christmas Lights!

- I didn't want to put up Christmas lights last year so I decided to pop in some Philips Hue lights and make them Christmas colors. I ended up being really impressed!
2018: We're headed into our second winter now and the lights are still working great. I agree with comments that these do not look as good as traditional light strings. I was looking for an easy way to show some Christmas spirit without traditional lights.
Man, I can't believe it's been six years since I made this video! Quick update: We have used these hue bulbs every day for the last six years & never had a single issue.
By my calculations you have $4,356 in Hue lights.
This video contains about $2000 of Hue lights (I've added more since the video too). After my next project (outdoor lightning!!) I'm sure I will have spent close to the amount you've mentioned.
Nice....
@@TheStockpile patiently awaiting the outdoor lighting update
Spring of 2019 🤞
Would never be able to justify spending that much money on lights.
Anyone else find these lights incredibly addictive? started off with a few lights in one room and now i've done the whole house and just starting on the back yard.
That's for sure.
Yup, however I I'd stick with different brands considering Philips Hues are $40 a bulb and I'd be broke if I did the entire house.
I'm addicted to watching videos on the bulbs as I don't have a job or a house and am in college so RUclips is all I do
Wow, you have a beautiful home
Thanks! It's probably the Hue lights.
i agree beauty house.. what do you do for work?
I named my lightbulbs: Hue Jackman, Hue Lauri, Hue-go, Hue Hefner, Hue Grant and Matt-Hue Mcconnau-hue 😂
Loved the christmas settings! You can also connect them with IFTTT.
Those are awesome names!!! There are so many fun things do with these bulbs :D
Love it 'alexa turn on hue jackman' 🤣🤣🤣
Simply AWESOME!!!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This was a refreshing video to watch while I'm awaiting my Hue Starter Kit to arrive 😁
😂😂😂... I'm laughing at the fact that you did a perfect backflip into the Hue rabbit hole!! It always starts off as a small project then us techia get to thinking 🤔. You did an awesome job 👏🏾
Great use of these! I live by these and love seeing how you used them for this!!
We have our whole house done too. Gotta be carful of these lights :)
Looks great, I’ve had mine outside in soffits since 2016 holding strong still. I love switching colors for the holidays.
Now they have outdoor light strips you could put under your eaves
What a good idea and I think it looks really good. Btw I like the look of your house
I had the same sort of idea of putting a few of my color Hue lights on the outside of our house for Christmas, but I haven't done it yet. The cool thing about these is I can write little scripts to make animation effects.
This is weird I was looking at videos of the Phillips lights and came across yours... I thought my profile picture had changed but actually we have the exact same name...LOL that’s hilarious!
Ha! It's a great name 👌👍
hey and u both like hue bulbs too haha pun intended
I just got into the hue lights 2 weeks ago. I have a scene I named Gameday where all the outside lights turn purple and gold for LSU games. And now I turned some neighbors onto them as well.
I think the led strips would look good outside too. Great video.
I could have told you that zwave or casseta dosnt work with Hue but you figured it out. Thanks for uploading.
very cool. we have that in our house and the lamptier app has changed everything
I’m almost at the 50 light mark myself. Almost time for a second hub.
I highly suggest downloading the OnSwitch app. But I’m sure you already have it.
I got 10 for Christmas and I love them I want to get more but their expensive but they are sure a good conversation starter gonna kit out my whole house slowly
Now you need to get the phillips hue outdoor lights to make it look even more amazing. Try using hue widget to make those lights dance nicely or even hue disco while playing music to get the lights to go with the music.
You need some hue strips. Those would look awesome
What a house!! I'm jealous
“I got my dragon” 😂
nice demo, thank you
Very nice house.
You could use spotlights to light up the walls of your house. I think it will look very nice.
Do you have an inflatable dragon in your front yard for Christmas? 😂😂😂
Hello are you rich?
I was doing this with the Tickteck wi-fi lights that bought a couple years ago. They worked fine and then the company just kind of dropped support for the lights. The best part was the lights were $15 bucks each.
I had them fade between the light colors that my Christmas lights were. I'd like to do it again since i had different settings for Halloween and the 4th of July. But I'm not shelling out the cash for Hue lights.
Nice video. Hue Outdoor lights are coming soon. Hoping for some cool landscape lighting to add to my Hue ecosystem. Super addictive. 40 lights and counting in my house...
Outdoor landscaping Hue lights would be really cool. You're going to need another bridge soon! ;D
Do you all have any issues with WiFi with so many lights hooked up to it? Also, why Hue over LIFX?
That is the nice part of Hue. You have a bridge that connects, but each light is connected to the bridge, not bogging down your wifi. Where LIFX, each light connects to wifi and once you get more lights, it can bog it down. I went with LIFX lights because i only have 4, AND their lights are able to be used outdoors. Technically the Hue lights are not made for outdoors (not including Hue's new landscaping lights). LIFX also connects to Alexa, Siri, ect just like Hue. If you plan to deck out your house, go Hue, but id you want to only use a few lights and/or use outdoors, go LIFX.
MizznDizz thanks! I have bought 21 LIFX so far and I’m really happy with them as they have worked really well. However, I will be ordering the new Hue outdoor lights...I guess I will need a bridge though since they do not come with it
no problem! I forgot to mention that LIFX are also much brighter than hue. But yes, you will need to get a bridge for the outdoor lights too.
Amazing ! i am just jumping in to the exact setup and using yours as inspiration. Still doesn't seem like they made weatherproof bulbs for this setup yet, so curious what your feedback/update is on the A19/BR30 setup 5 years later ? Hope you have a chance to answer and put my mind as ease before going all in on it! Thanks in advance and amazing work!
Been great. Never had a single bulb go out!
@The Stockpile awesome, thank you for the response I am ordering this week!
One last question if you have a second , I see they make the A19 is 800,1100,1600 lumens, which did you get ?
I'm tempted for the 1600, but the BR30 are 1200, so might be safest to go with the 1100 A19s to get the closest match ?
I'm glad I'm not the only that went ham on these lights when I discovered them. 😂 They are cool as hell. Try the huegasm app to sync the lights to the frozen song. It works very good. I send songs thru SoundCloud.
Great idea, never have to put up lights again
I used Sengled lights, the color accuracy is the same as hue and about half the price. They are also Alexa compatible. The only feature that sengled doesn't have is the automatic color shifting.
Pretty cool. I hope it's worked well for you.
You have a pretty nice house, congrats! :)
These lights are so awesome and next level but sooo expensive
U should but them in the pool wow that would look so cool
Cool video, i have become addicted to hue and my wife hates it. But it's so cool
Beautiful house 🏠!!!!!
I was planning on doing that this year with the hue light strips, too expensive just now maybe next year. love my hue bulbs
I did the calculations correct he spent $1,500 in hue lights
NateDawwg 🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮
No he didn't
I counted 300 to 500
thats a beautiful house
Nice house dude.
Your house is beautiful
Where did you get that Falcon poster from?!!! That is awesome and have to have it!
It's a print by Craig Drake from 2014
you have a beautiful home.
In order for all the lights sync you need a Wi-Fi range extender👍🏼
Not true
I suggest candle lights for your front windows which will give you more color and variation options.
I will look into that 👍
What house model is that? Is it from Ryan Homes or what company and model? Looks very nice!
Jeff Unverrich I really want to know too 🧐
Ivory Homes - Hanover Model w/ some modifications
You could move the bridge around with an ethernet wall adapter and move the bridge closer to the front of the house
i have found that when you set the lights to the colors you want, save the profile as a scene....the communication works better that way
I thought the range of the lights are not that much
But it gorgeous
You should use the living scenes from hue labs and look for a Christmas theme or maybe like a candle theme and make the transitions quicker.
FYI: Hue makes a great wireless dimmer switch. Battery powered, just sticks to the wall, and allows you to trigger up to 4 different scenes. I got it for a room with a badly setup switch. Look into it. You won't be sorry!
Matthew Young You clearly didn’t watch the whole video
This is awesome! Curious, what type of hue bulbs did you use for your sofits lights? I'm debating whether normal bulbs would work or their recessed spotlight. Thanks !
I have smaller eve lights fixtures and use the the A19 type.
I really want some of these now. Tho I’m a dj and could probably do most of this with my dj uplights.
I am planning to do the same thing at my house. I also have the Z-wave dimmer switches that you switched out for the basic switches. You said the Hue didn't like the dimmer switches. Would leaving the switches set to 100% solve the problem or was removing the dimmers absolutely necessary to make the Hue bulbs work properly? (I really don't want to remove them after spending so much time and money to put them in!)
Based on my experience it was absolutely necessary to remove the z-wave switches on circuits using the Hue lights (mostly because of kids). It's possible that if they were set to 100% and never touched it might not be an issue but it's too long ago for me to clearly remember. It still seemed like they flickered.
@@TheStockpile I went with Wyze bulbs. I temporarily installed them in a lamp just to program them to my phone app. I plan to install them outside on my next day off. I am too lazy to remove the Zwave dimmers. I will let you know only if the dimmers DID need to be removed.
What kind of light sockets do you have in your eave? Can you post a link please? Were they part of the house or put in after the house was built?
They are just small recessed can light with ES sockets (Edison screw) bases. The fit small flood light type bulbs. We built the house with that but they can usually be added to eves.
Gonna do the same but with IFTT so they switch automatically to christmas mode when it's christmas.
nice vid, I have philips hue too, but only 5 color bulbs and like 5 white bulbs.
Which Hue bulb did you use for the outdoor downlights?
What kind of bulb you used for the downlight in the front? like BR, PR... etc. are they wet proof? Thanks
They are a combination of A19 and BR30 bulbs. They are not rated for outdoor use but they've been fine for the last couple of years. Absolutely no issues.
Are your outside can lights open? or is there a plastic cover over the bulb?
They are open
Very cool! 😎
There is a app for the pc or Mac that lets you sync with music.. you could but out a sonos and play Christmas music and have sync with the light.
Hue lights are too slow for music syncing, i tried to write my own software to sync with it. But the api and the bridge are too slow for "good" and latency less syncing
Do they have strobe?
Hue sync computer...make the lights dance with xmas music
I have Phillips hue lightbulbs in my room🤪🤪there so cool
Wait till you find out about Phillips Hue Sync
Very cool but soo expensive
Even as kid I was infatuated with expensive things. One Day my dad said to me, "You have a beer budget and wine tastes. " I turned right back at him and said, "Then I'll make sure I have a wine budget," and I've worked my ass off ever since.
7:00
Are those 9 different hue-bulbs in a normal lamp (9 different connections to the hue-bridge) or is this a special hue-lamp with one main connection to the hue-bridge?
9 different hue lights w/ 9 hub connections.
What app is that for Hue lights? I used to have that app and now cannot find it.
where did you get your entry foyer chandelier? :) looks great
I'm not sure- it just came with the house! 😃
What kind of hue bulbs did you use the regular ones that come with the hub or a different one?
The standard kind that come with the hub. Also a few BR30 type bulbs.
Have you had any issues with using these bulbs outside? As they state for indoor use only? I would like to get some for my eves and porch as well.
Yes, they state they are for indoor use but no issues yet. I've had them in over a year and they have worked great.
were they A19 ?@@TheStockpile
Download Hue Maniac and they will flash like real xmas lights
What bulbs are these the normal gu10 downlights or something extra from Philip?
Standard A19's in the eves and BR30's under the porch.
Would you recommend one over the other?
The lights look really nice and you've done a lot with them. It's a shame for all of your investment you won't enjoy them as much as neighbors and people driving by. The chandelier and dude room look cool!
It's true that I don't see the ones outside much, but hopefully they help contribute a bit to the holiday atmosphere.
Are you using the standard E26/A19 bulbs, or BR30 (flood lights) bulbs?
Both- the eves have the A19 type and the porch area has the BR30s.
Have you tried having a light dance with music? Would love to see that.
A fun idea! I have played around with this a little bit but it's extremely hard to coordinate the lights accurately to music as the response time is not always immediate.
I see site check it out where some use hue bulbs with music. www.google.ca/amp/s/huehomelighting.com/amazing-christmas-lights-using-philips-hue/amp/
Cam - I would suggest using mesh network system - several manufacturers make those including Linksys - helps expand your network coverage - I have the 3 pack linksys velop and I have no loss of coverage in my two story townhouse with +2k sq/ft....my hue and wink hub all work fine.
Oh yeah. . . Beautiful house
Appreciate the suggestion! I actually moved my Hue Hub and haven't had any problems since. All the lights have been working a-ok for about a year now 😊
Independent of the Hue lights I added a Netgear Orbi system (it pretends to be a mesh network) and that's been great for additional Wifi coverage.
$550 I mean $2,000 Later lol. I have the same setup. It’s the best
Nice house. I live in a shed.
Now you need to get a few Google Homes, voice control every hue light without the need for the app
"I told the guy, to make sure the lights were secure." ... who's the guy? One of santa's little helpers?
Santa's little helpers would have found a way...
I'm talking about the Christmas light installer. He & I tried 3 different kinds of clips but portions of the lights blew off several times (during the winter we get wind gusts of up to 70mph here- last year giant section of my roof blew off too 😒)
Should have gotten lifx bulbs no hubs needed they work through the WiFi and the app a lot cheaper
The Hue app doesn't cost anything (beyond the cost of the hardware). Also, if I'm not mistaken, it seems LIFX requires an Internet connection and a proprietary app to set things up or change WiFi settings. If the company ever goes under or pulls their online service, it would seem like you'd be screwed. The Philips system can work through the local network only, and its API is public, meaning that you can set up and configure the entire system without Philips's own app if you had to. That to me is a much more secure and future-proof solution.
They make landscaping lighting
That’s cool
So the dimmer has issues because they're dimmers for halogen. You need dimmers for LED's.
There is no traditional dimmer switch (LED or otherwise) that's compatible with the Hue lights. It is not recommended to use the Hue system with any dimmer switches. Phillips sells a control pad that WILL allow the Hue lights to be dimmed the same way they can be dimmed from the Hue app.
@@TheStockpile You are correct. There's a dimmer switch for Hue. There IS a difference in dimmer switches for halogen, incandescent, and LEDs however. Nice setup.
PS, I love the lights
Dude, I can barely afford 2 white bulbs. And you put a lot of colored ones outside where people can unscrew them and steal them.
@First Name I know someone with a ladder
people who think like that get spotted in a neighborhood like his
I wondered about that. I have three in the front. Sad part is they will steal thinking they have a colored bulb, screw it in and it’ll be white! Only plus they’ll get is a lower electric bill and the bulb will last a long ass time!
Which app do you use, the stock Phillips app?
Disregard, just saw the portion of your video that answered my question.
Nice👍
I'm trying to get a single light bulb to transition between different "Christmas Colors" but I can't seem to get it to work. Could you perhaps do a video on how you managed to do this? Or does anybody know if the Living Scenes Hue Labs formula only works with multiple bulbs?
Krijn Broekhuijzen get the iConnectHue App. It has many animation features. It works very well.
As far as I know it will work with one bulb. However, all I've got are lots of bulbs.
If I run across the answer to your question I'll be sure to follow up.
Try the hue xmas app or hue Fireworks
Both very fun!
Are the apps from hue labs stable? Will the features be moved to the main app?
Based on my experience they are pretty solid (a little quirky sometimes). I would like to see them get carried over to the main app but I don't know if they will or not.
Have a try on "Hue Dj" application, which you can download from google play store, it makes fantasy dance dj effects
How did you get them to alternate between colors
Just set the individual bulb colors. First one red, next one green and so on. After you have all the colors set you can save the whole setup.
cool albeit expensive option.
Fair disclaimer, I love my hue lights but they are expensive... lol
you have alot of money man, but good film
