If not for you, I would’ve never known my dealer wasn’t sealing! When your sister got her FD, you noticed a problem and replaced the heat strip. With your link, I purchased new strips and no issues since. Thank you so much for all you do. I’ve learned an immense amount of information from you. I wish I knew your first name though, when I recommend your channel I just call you “SchoolReports”! Lol
I work at an old TB state hospital. Found some old bags and a heat sealer. Going to play with them and put M&M’s and skittles in the bags for everyone at Christmas. Just using the the out dated things for gifts. 😂

Can you link to the heat sealers you've found to be effective? The one I tried was not reliable so I use my vacuum sealer. The vacuum sealer is great for everything I store in mason jars but oh my, it's a total pain when I use it just for sealing mylar bags.
I can only tell you what has worked for me. I've been using this brand for decades. Thanks @@SchoolReports. And thanks for the years of informative tutorials. They aren't exciting, and the don't have the glitz of a lot of the TikToks that attracts people now-a-days, but watching them is time well spent. Honestly, if it wasn't for a number of folks like you and some of the podcast folks, I would have left RUclips years ago. If you ever move over to a youtube alternative, like Lbry, etc, please be sure to let us all know.
Thanks! In a big part, it was the Over-The-Top style videos that made me start making my own. I just wanted the simple, straight video showing the tested process. I just wasn't finding them when I started freeze drying. And some were inaccurate or even just plain nonsense. (And of course the click-baity thumbnails with a title something like "I JUST FREEZE DRIED SOMETHING, AND YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED!!!) I have been putting the videos up on Rumble too, just in case. rumble.com/user/SchoolReports
Why would anyone use a low heat setting for mylar film? Thick or thin just maximize the heat output... You're not going to burn or overheat mylar film with a heat sealer.
This was mostly about the sealers failing to seal the bags at all. A large number of people received sealers that wouldn't seal. With the higher powered sealers, when sealing a thinner bag, it can cut the end off by melting it too much. The numbers I've seen say that it has a melting point 489 °F and a vaporization temperature of 662°F. I assume we would want to be in the 173 degree range.
Mylar is a brand name for PET film ( technically BoPET (biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate) and is clear. The ones we (collectively) usually think of when we talk about mylar is Metalized Polyester (BoPET) film. It adds a super thin metal coating/layer. (The metalized coating adds greatly to its resistance to oxygen transmission)

How often does the strip need replaced? I've been using my Harvest Right sealer for 2 months and it's already in tatters!
Wow! That seems fast. We get at least 2000 to 4000 bags before we have to replace the tape, a little sooner if the heat strip is overheating.

@@SchoolReports Interesting. Mylar is laymen terms is tinfoil. It should not overheat that easily.
