The problem with a lot of this equipment is the salesman only cares about the sale often does not work as good or as easy as they tell you. The ink is very expensive for those printers you will end up using more than they originally tell you good luck love your channel.
if they say it should work he should be able to reclaim it? Yes the ink is what they make money on. and if it doesnt print for a while. it will clean itself with ink. or at least a regular ink printer does that. :)
I’m about to buy my fourth Roland print/cut. My second machine had a light magenta print head arrive dead. It was a small ordeal like this but warranty took care of it and it was replaced once we figured out the issue. These machines are incredibly reliable and accurate.
You know what I appreciate about your channel? There are plenty DIY channels about screen printing, but you have excelled past that instead of low budget janky setups. Which is inspirational to us, because we can see where it can take us. I've been putting my profits back into the craft because I want to get to where you are someday. Thank you homie!
Welcome to the Roland family. I have been a VersaCamm owner for almost a year. I do my designing on Mac and transfer to a windows laptop that has a ethernet port.
All the stress, all the hard work and i could truly see how appreciative you were to finally have that thing up and running. Good stuff man enjoyed the video
We had a Roland at my last shop and had color issues for a while. Ended up downloading several different profiles for various substrates . Eventually found the right profiles for each substrate. The printheads can be a bit fickle, once you have them in alignment you shouldn't have any issues. We also had the same Mac/PC issues. Ended up purchasing an inexpensive PC with Win 10 Pro as a dedicated RIP. Once we worked through some silly issues, we had good experiences with it. Hope you work through your issues and enjoy this printer.
Thanks man. I'm through most of the bullshit now, just a few small things to tweak and it should be where I want it. Then I just have to learn what profiles I like for each media
Just purchased the same printer. I run and teach on Mac and PC. We spent $500 on a dedicated PC for a print server. still design on the mac and transfer it to the PC to print. WORKS GREAT! Roland tech guy is AMAZING also!
5 years ago I started my vinyl print company and went through similar headaches with my printer! Issuses will always arise and troubleshooting is part of the process. I do a fair amount of heat transfer shirts including print and cut transfers. I enjoy your channel and can relate! Thanks for sharing!
Im a screen/offset printer too, have an Epson s40600 and the support they have with us is incredible since the 1st day... hope you smash big orders with it, it is a game changer!! Vinyl and banners have a great profit margin
I've been learning the pricing this week and you're right, the margins are insane. I'm taking a couple weeks to learn and try out everything it does, then it'll be put to work 🤘🏻
Whoever sold it to you didn't have the infrastructure to do set up or troubleshoot properly. I am an Applications Engineer for a group in PA and we are the exclusive reseller for Roland in NY NJ and PA as well as many other machines and never had those issues with a brand new machine ever, only a machine that's been used or abused. I saw it came out of the truck put together? They don't ship them like that unless they put it together in the truck. Only buy from a reseller who does the install, service and training. We take the customer throughout the entire process, do the install and the training, the biggest issue I have ever had with any of the machines is admin rights at a location or if someone's computer isn't properly formatted or updated. Glad you got it rolling, those machines print beautifully and some of the easiest to maintain. Keep it plugged in idle when not in use as the head will continue to clean itself periodically.
We run an older Roland SP540V, and the graininess you described is something that's pretty common when the bi-directional calibration is off. I got the same result with ours when we first got it. Printed like a $20 desktop printer from 1996. Spent a few hours messing around with it...I'm ultra picky when it comes to quality...ended up doing a full head calibration...literally looking at test prints with a magnifying glass until it was perfect...and now it prints incredibly well...and it's a 15 year old printer. One day we may bump up to a new version, but I'm really happy with this old workhorse we have. As long as I clean the heads regularly and keep it maintained, it works extremely well. Good luck!
That was the main setting that was a mile off of where it needed to be, among a few others and the head alignment. He also didn't teach me about the media gap settings so that wasn't helping either
Hell yeah dude! I bet doing that massive ROGUE LAB print was satisfying AF! Congratulations on getting the damn printer to work, can't wait to see what comes out of it in the future 🤙🏼
Glad you got it working. I have the same model getting delivered in the next 48 hours and this video gave me a damn ulcer. Hopefully my tech wont be a dumb ass.
I am in the same boat with the lack of compatibility with Mac. I hate having to have two computers out to do one job. So I put my windows so that o can keep it closed and still run hook then I control remotely with my Mac using teamviewer . You still have to send files over email or Dropbox but having to now switch over is so much easier in my opinion. Every little bit helps me . Amazing video.
I had the XC540 for 12 years. Great machine, but it hated printing banners and so did I because of it. A cpl of new print heads, a belt and motor wore out as well as a broken line, easy fixes and not bad for 12 years. Careful with aftermarket inks!
OMG I just bought one of these printers for my shop and I love it! Haven't had any issues with it yet. Thankfully, I purchased the installation and training with it so there were issues with setup. I've been following your channel for a few months and you do great work. I have a Brother DTG and Ricoma Embroidery machine also. Love your work!!
I got the SG2-540 at the end of May. My tech was there about 3 hours from delivery to running production jobs. We are all Mac for design etc but I run the Roland on an inexpensive PC from Sams Club connected to our network. I had a completely different experience than you!
Great vid man.. glad you didn't give up on it and now things are okay.. good luck on making it exactly what you want.. and cheers. also can't wait to see the new "PLACE" you move into..
Awesome felling getting a new piece of kit like this. My new Mimaki CJV150-160 was installed over the last couple of days, and whilst we had no connectivity or print quality issues my head is about ready to explode with all the new stuff I have to learn having just done die-cuts for the past 10 years. Stick at it, now you have a decent tech you should be flying.
Fun to find this video. Thanks for making. I too am a motorcycle guy who is getting into large format printing (though I'm not using it for motorcycle stuff). How are you liking the Roland now that you've had it a while? Did you look at HP latex units when you were shopping? If so, may I ask why you chose the Roland over the HP? Thanks in advance for your help.
I prefer the color reproduction and quality of solvent over latex, plus having the ability to print way more than stickers is a big advantage there. I love the Roland so far when it comes to print, it kind of cuts like ass though
Congratulations buddy I know that must have felt great to finally get it and to get it up and running. I can’t wait to see what you do with this thing.
Thats so cool that you jumped into wide format printing. Ive been in the screen printing game for like 3 years and I watched pretty much all your SP videos. Now literally like 3 weeks ago I went trough the same thing as we got into wide format printing too . I will activate the damn bell on you channel now lol. Thanks for sharing your experiences brother!!
It's frustrating figuring them out yourself, but I suggest going online and finding a repair manual (paid a few bucks for a pdf copy) I've saved SO much in repair costs. I have an old Roland SP300V but I print a ton of stickers and lots of HTV transfers. These machines are BEASTS!
Just had my VG2-540 installed. I’ve been running a VG-540 for a couple years so I knew the issues you had ahead of time. I bought a 5 year old PC off Amazon for $160 to run it and it was on. If you’re struggling with color I’d recommend doing an SGIA color workshop. Hoping you grab a solid profile isn’t exactly the route to take. Been running wide format printers for 15 years and I did a ton of research on what to get. You’ve got a bomb ass printer. Congrats!
Thanks man. It's all sorted now that all the head stuff is aligned and calibrated. I use spot colors 99% of the time and so far they've all been dead on or very close matches
First off welcome printer hell. 1. Get the Roland color book for adobe. It helps a lot with colors on screen translating to off screen. 2nd print yourself the color guide that is in their system. 3rd Arlon paper always work well for me. 4th go find a good teacher sounds like you did and take a two day class. I took one and it helped out a lot. I did mine through one of the big representatives Roland used for teaching.
🔥 ! Hate you had such frustration in the beginning, we have the same " we won't be defeated" attitude lol, kudos to you for sticking it out! But did we expect anything less, nah! I hear they're killer machinesl. Man we've eyeballed 1 of these for years just don't have the space yet, but definitely a goal for the future.
I’m looking at buying the VG3 series and i want to do vehicle print wraps. What software and training did you use to figure out your vehicle wrap? Any input and advice is appreciated, love the content!
I have an Epson SureColor S40600 and I can tell you that japanese don't "fuck" with tech especially in the printing industry. Roland is big brand name with an amazing products catalog (well known too for making musical instruments). Once you understand how a large format printer works, making the right adjustments and settings, cleaning up the printhead to avoid nozzles clogging you'll always get the best results.
Hey Lee, first off congrats on the set up , love the videos. Love your reaction to getting the printer to work, priceless, amazing what a bit of old tech will do. But i understand your frustration & it is ok to be, as they say, Anal about your business, nothing wrong at all & doing everything spot on is a good thing, considering your customer base is the public & the fact that you are obviously a perfectionist, a good thing to be. Got a heap more of your vids to watch, so keep up the great work & keep holding your head high.
Thanks a lot man! You nailed it, I'm a perfectionist of the highest degree which made this whole deal extremely frustrating. Thankfully everything is running smoothly now
I was in the same boat as you, almost the same experience with our installer/tech. Bad or complete lack of training that I had to unlearn and I found out later that the tech was basically training me to waste media and ink so we would buy more and often. To top things off I had zero experience running large format, just had to wing it and do my own research for the company I work for. Two years later and I still wouldn't say I'm an expert, but if you have any questions or need some advice hit me up and I'll do my best. Good luck with the new equipment, its fun and terrifying all at the same time.
I appreciate it man. I'm the same way right now, zero knowledge to experience and diving head first into it haha. Did it with screen printing and it worked out ok
It's a great machine for the most part. The cutting isn't great but the print quality is amazing when it's dialed in. I had a rough time getting started but it's been a workhorse for me since I added a stand alone cutter
As a printer, designer and former developer I can tell you about the software support situation, or at least my view of it. Very, VERY few companies develop for mac. It's a closed and very unfriendly ecosystem to try to develop for. At University all development work is (was) PC-centric, there was never an option to learn to develop for apple platforms at all. So this means the VAST majority of developers are comfortable developing for PC/windows. Design was artificially pushed towards apple many years ago by sales people, there is basically zero difference designing on a well set up PC or a well set up mac, particularly now that the software is basically the same and even Apple dumped their propriety processors in favour of Intel. My long standing personal preference for kit + computer is PC + Epson - I have run up to a 64" epson and the workflow just works. don't try to mix apple & windows in a professional workflow.
I'll have to disagree. The workflow and OS on Mac is so much faster and more reliable. I've had this debate with a friend who's die hard PC guy so we stacked our nearly identical machines up side by side, and the Mac ran away with it when it came to render speed, file sharing and a few other standard daily things we need around here. The OS is what really does it for me though
@@leestuart38 mmm Kay, I think for workflow, it's whatever you're used to and works for you. For me that's windows. Anyway, I have the morning free so I'm going to fiddle with my 2019 Honda Monkey :-D
I think it's hilarious how big companies just assume everyone buying equipment like this is a large company with desktops and CD-rom drives in their offices like it's the 80's. It's modern day 2020. C'mon people. Just make simple windows AND mac supported drivers and downloads. Good grief. Glad you figured it out man.
Now that you have had this for awhile, how do you like it. We are thinking of purchasing one and looking for some feedback from someone that has used it for awhile. Also have you used it for Tshirts at all? Thanks for all your videos you are truly inspiring.
As a printer, I love it. With the right setup it prints super solid and vibrant. The cutting lacking a bit, its mediocre at best. But that goes for all print/cut combo machines. Now that I've added a stand alone cutter this setup is killer
This was the first video I actually screamed at the phone “Bro just buy a laptop” we gotta realize Mac isn’t as great in all areas as we would like for it to be
Awesome Video Lee!! I recently purchased a Roland Printer and I to have been having problems getting it going. Did you ever run into a problem where the print would start and then stop mid print and the head would go back to the home position and not restart the print? No error codes come up on either the versaworks or the printer itself, been chassing this for a couple days now, it just keeps randomly happening. Love the videos man, keep creating!
I've had this happen and it freaked me out, but it's actually the dumbest and easiest fix ever. This happens when the computer goes to sleep or goes into screen saver mode, because it's continuously feeding data to the printer rather than loading it all in one shot. If it stops just wake the computer and it'll starter back up where it left off. I've just turned off any sleep or screen saver modes so it's always on as long as the laptop is open
At the print houses I have worked at that all used Macs for design they have have a dedicated rip PC next to the printers and saved the headaches and makes the workflow as simple as printing to the RIP as if it was network printer. What you have seemed to have done is make life far far more difficult for yourself! 😔
The head alignment made the big difference, I had a tech do that. But calibration and material gap adjustments in the machine are super important every time you load it with new material, you can google how to do them very easily
There's a Roland VP-540 Printer/Cutter local to me and they are wanting $3k for it. They say it's fully working with no issues but is there any way to test it fully? Any help would be awesome because I'm super interested in getting into this kind of stuff but I don't want to get scammed out of 3k lol.
@@leestuart38 Okay thanks. It looks like its a different model. Its a 540 but its silver not Blue so I'm guessing its a lower quality model. Do you have any idea where I can find the differences between the 540s?
Dude, I had the worse experience with my purchase as well. If you can help me get mine dialed in too, that would be great!! I would like the colors solid as well 🤘🏼
Not sure what your Labor situation is, but I’ll tell you I waited wayyy too long to figure out that part. Documentation and process control killed me once I couldn’t do everything myself anymore. We fixed the computer problem by picking up cheap windows towers and treating them like control panels for each machine. One for the plotter, one for the embroidery workstation, etc. they never have to be updated or moved. And we’re still running one machine with floppy disks... 😂
Dope printer but I think Roland needs to audit the company you bought it from and the guy who said “That’s just how it prints” needs some training himself. Wow, that was shocking. Props to the tech guy that helped with the calibration. Reflecting on this some more, I’ve been looking at printers recently too here in the UK, and if you’re going for a machine that big you’d be better off (from my understanding) with an HP Latex machine. Zero gas-out time so you can laminate same-day, but you would need a stand-alone plotter to do your contour/die cuts. Hope the Roland continues to work for you dude!
I prefer solvent over latex for what we do here, accurate and rich Pantone color matching for wraps is the biggest reason. But with eco solvent you can laminate the same day as well, just not immediately. 6-8 hours is all it needs
A head alignment was key here, mine was pretty far out. And setting up all the proper media settings on the user side wasn't something the first guy even mentioned, which is crucial to getting a good print. Setting the media gap and calibration every time you load a roll of material in needs to be done
Not sure where you purchased the Roland from, but not all Roland dealers are like that. They should have got you up and running in a couple of hours. Glad you stuck with it and got it running, but that is not something you should have had to do on your own. Going forward, I'm sure you will love it.
I feel your pain bro. I have two Mutoh Valuejets and troubleshoot issues all fu&*in day. The equipment is good but its part of the business so you have to get used to it. You have to use good Rip and print software, SAI or onyx. If possible, download the ICC profiles from the manufacturer of the media; For example, if you use 3m Vinyl, Go to the 3m website to download the profile so your colors will be spot.
Lee I have the SG2-300 and although the prints are pretty good I don't think it is at its peak. Would you mind sharing the tech's info you used in Texas? Or the main settings you used to get the best print quality? I'm also in TX. Thanks
Welcome to the print and cut Fam lee... i assume you were talking about flexi/production manager its a joke...Adobe for life lol ..... i remember the day i bought my first roland print/cut .. it took me and my local roland tech like 10 hours to get things going smoothly... but damn if i dont say it makes me so happy to see this big ol hunk of metal spittin my artwork on some good ol orafol vinyl... If you want any help with versaworks im happy to help you bro... not sure if your using the roland color library but thats the only way im able to get consistent colors... its like picking a pantone color book but its Roland true colors... but yeah man im happy to help...
@@leestuart38 yo man, im actually looking for a new source for shirts( as i just dont have the space for screen printing in house) is that something i could order through you?
Man...the way you experiment, try to learn new things, and go through a bunch of bullshit is literally like a mirror image of my struggles with printing the past 5 years. I’ve been looking into wide format printers (probably going for a hp latex for many reasons) but that grain issue you ran into is what I worry about so I haven’t pulled the trigger. Hope you document your whole journey with this machine.
You'd have less connection problem if you connect the printer and computer through a router instead of directly connecting them. That router doesn't even need an internet connection, but it would handle all the connection protocols.
Damn, that was a massive sacrifice. Hurt to see the sand blasting & powder coating booth going down. I was looking at the exact same machine before the covid thing came along. I still dont know if i should go for that or the mimaki. But seeing the issue you had..i dont know..need to look more into it. Cant wait to see future projects and the stuff you'll create with the new set up 👊🏼
Lee Stuart you are a true inspiration bro. As i too have a home based t shirt and sign business, I am about to buy this very same machine and as i still questioned myself to pull the trigger on it, now i can confidently go for it knowing you love the quality. Did you also get a cold laminator for this? How much did you pay for the equipment if you dont mind me asking?
About to buy one of these but I’m considering a SG640 and a VG2540 of a VG2640. But as far as the size do you think the 64inch is worth the investment?
Now that I've been in the business a few years, I wish I would have spent the extra money and got the 64". I'm adding another printer this year and it'll definitely be a 64"
I always thought the Graphic Design industry loved Apple Macs due to their graphics handling abilities. Also, always use an ethernet cable whenever possible, it will always be faster and more reliable.
would you be so kind as to share which adjustments were made at 18 mins in? I am having the same issues with my SG 540. Grainy prints when they should be solid. PLEASE HELP.
Hi, what color configuration did you get? Im getting the VG3 and Im new to this, I heard white dries out the heads and mainly people say to get orange and green... Im planning to print a lot of vynil for t-shirts, banners, canvas, some car decals and vynil for walls.
I have the 8 color with orange setup, green wasn't available yet when I got this. White ink will really depend on your market, and it sounds like something you'll never need. Since you're going with the new vg3, I'd get the orange and green to get the best color out of it
There used to be RIP for Mac computers called Roland PrintStudio but due to the lack of interest from the market was discontinued. The best option in my opinion would be to have dedicated PC for VW. Regarding WiFi. It’s not stable enough for such purpose. It’s just never works good enough and believe me, we tried. It can be done but it will cause problems.
RolandDG tech here, I’m sorry that you had such a experience. Actually software is available on the web, you got one of the last machine with the DVD bundled with it. You should be properly trained to use this machine and this machine can print very clean and sharp jobs. I hate that you had this awful experience because of not proper training. I do training for dealer’s technicians and most of them in my region are really great. Maybe you had some new guy :) I’m glad that you’ve given the machine a second chance, and third...
Ya I got zero training on this thing, I've had to figure it all out myself. You'll see plenty more of those issues in the video I released today haha. Thankfully I've got it all figured out now for the most part
If you have some problem you can reach me by e-mail: mkozlowski(at)rolanddg.com or I will ask my Roland colleagues from your region that I know are experts. They need to double their efforts in dealer tech training.
I have been in this business since 2009, my first Roland vs540 and I continue working as the first day I completed it, I am very happy, but I want to move to the new technology, but I am afraid! All the reviews are crazy., The ink is always expensive, and my configuration CMYKLcLm and everything I do from 2 iMac. With High Sierra, and for the Catalina 4.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 design, I have been running my business since 2009, everything I deliver to my clients with impressive color ranges, always satisfied! If you know this business, you could be a Successful!!
They should've advised to get a cheap PC just to run the printer, much cheaper than 3rd party software. Also useful when ripping big jobs, doesn't tie up a machine. I have my Roland five years and the thing I like about it most, is that it just does the fucking job. I keep it cleaned, maintained and treat it like a baby and it never fails me. It has flaws, as does the software, but it works. Lamination is a learned skill, just takes practice. You might have realised this also, but laminating creates mad static and that pulls every bit of dirt to the print. Sealed floors or floor mats help.
Ya that's something I wish I would have been told, but that's set up now so it's all good. Laminating is really hard I've learned haha, but I'm slowly figuring it out
I switched all my print stuff over to Flexi sign pro this year, and was so worth it compared to the stock rip software that came with my printer. ALSO ROLAND YIKES. jkjk I have 2 epsons at my shop haha. For the graininess, if your rip software supports it, change the dither settings. That can also help refine the print further!
In my Mac I had "Virtual MAchine" sectioned in 2. one for mac and the other for windows... and justa as eazy, comand tabs between one and the other. super eazy. non stop work.
Hey lee I was watching your youtube channel and I'm about to get the Roland Truevis2 VG2-640 and I was watching your channel and got pretty scared saying to myself did I just fuch and get this printer instaed of going with the Hp latex. Please tell me I made a good choice.
Lee, keep the laminator. Swap to a Latex or if you need eco solvent get an Epson, or if you need a print/cut Mimaki. The easy maintenance of latex and color superiority of the Epson. I'm 2/3 thru video and hoping the end you decide against keeping it by the end...
PC vs Mac is so frustrating! I would be all in for my Mac's but are forced to use PC's cause of the lack of capability. We run a VS540I get great prints for stickers using Oracal 3651RA with 210 Lam. Also Dan a Sunbstance can help out with your Motorcross Film. Great Video!
I'll have to check that out, I'm looking for a nice die cut sticker material setup. Trying to find something without branding all over the back of the liner is a pain though
@@leestuart38 I dislike the branding on the backing also. However I really like the quality of the film. I'm sure they are alternatives. The print/cut is great to get the ball rolling and you will be able to do "Die" cut stickers with the Roland but it will not be ideal. In the future you may want to consider getting a separate cutter. The Summa T-Series is the only way to go with stickers IMO. It's big money but well worth it. Phil Johnson at Airmark is super cool guy and has helped me out several times. One thing I'm sure you know...folks in this industry are not short on suggestions and advice. Just sending out some info for ya! ruclips.net/video/UDqOlMB3ZH0/видео.html
Just be careful keeping that in your garage. If it gets too cold it can cause problems with the print heads. Ideally, you want to keep it in a temperature controlled environment.
simply buy a surface pro and they should install versa works remotely, install a few profiles and presto and should be all set. We have a dedicated surface just for our printer. Roland is great not sure why so much trouble to get going BUT you will love that machine. Good luck.
Now that it's been set up right by someone who knows what they're doing, it's been super awesome. Still annoyed I need to buy more PCs haha, can't stand them. But it is what it is and I'll have to deal with it

Just had my roland printer months ago and i must say it was a game changer to add up to my screen print business. Enjoy
It's already been such a great addition to the business, and it's just getting started 🤘🏻
What has it done for you?
The problem with a lot of this equipment is the salesman only cares about the sale often does not work as good or as easy as they tell you. The ink is very expensive for those printers you will end up using more than they originally tell you good luck love your channel.
if they say it should work he should be able to reclaim it? Yes the ink is what they make money on. and if it doesnt print for a while. it will clean itself with ink. or at least a regular ink printer does that. :)
Eco solvent ink isn't expensive..?
@@rrkk6434 whats the average price for all cartridges?

Welcome to the Roland family. I have been a VersaCamm owner for almost a year. I do my designing on Mac and transfer to a windows laptop that has a ethernet port.
How hard can that be??
Customer service is so important when doing anything, especially when is comes to tech. Keep up the grind, love the time you dedicate to this channel.
Agreed 🙌🏻
I love watching your company grow. You have been doing amazing work. I love that your attention to detail is what it is.

Is 12:49 am in Australia I should be going to sleep but I have 20 minutes for a lee Stuart video
same 1223 here in SA haha
I like that dedication 🙌🏻. Thanks man
All the stress, all the hard work and i could truly see how appreciative you were to finally have that thing up and running. Good stuff man enjoyed the video
I definitely was, it felt like a massive weight lifted off of me in the end. Since then I've been absolutely loving this thing 🙌🏻
Dude, I'm planning on getting one and you had me on a rollercoaster of whether I should get it. Now I definitely am. Good video!
Yup that's how I'm set up now. I still hate the little bit I have to use that PC though 😂

It's definitely a bit of a learning curve with these things. Thanks man 👊🏻
The tech that installed mine do it so quick. This machine run super smooth. I love this printer.
I wish I had the same experience 😂. The second one that came and fixed my problems was much better
Lee Stuart my tech is from texas. He sell a lot of them.
@@leestuart38 Glad you got it figured out. It's amazing how much a difference all of that can make.
Hell yeah dude! I bet doing that massive ROGUE LAB print was satisfying AF! Congratulations on getting the damn printer to work, can't wait to see what comes out of it in the future 🤙🏼
Felt good to see something awesome come out of it after the 3 day long nightmare 😂. Can't wait to see where this goes
@@leestuart38 hell yeah. And we'll come.along for the ride. Keep it up dude 🤙🏼
Glad you got it working. I have the same model getting delivered in the next 48 hours and this video gave me a damn ulcer. Hopefully my tech wont be a dumb ass.
You should be ok, now you know what to watch for at least haha. Good luck!
Ya I just left that little pc set up with it and transfer files over with a jump drive or Dropbox. Annoying but at least it works 😂
I had the XC540 for 12 years. Great machine, but it hated printing banners and so did I because of it. A cpl of new print heads, a belt and motor wore out as well as a broken line, easy fixes and not bad for 12 years. Careful with aftermarket inks!
Definitely staying away from aftermarket inks
OMG I just bought one of these printers for my shop and I love it! Haven't had any issues with it yet. Thankfully, I purchased the installation and training with it so there were issues with setup. I've been following your channel for a few months and you do great work. I have a Brother DTG and Ricoma Embroidery machine also. Love your work!!
This was definitely a bad experience, I was "trained" but we all saw how that went haha. Now that I've figured it out it's a great machine
I got the SG2-540 at the end of May. My tech was there about 3 hours from delivery to running production jobs. We are all Mac for design etc but I run the Roland on an inexpensive PC from Sams Club connected to our network. I had a completely different experience than you!
Sounds like the install I should have had 😂
Great vid man.. glad you didn't give up on it and now things are okay.. good luck on making it exactly what you want.. and cheers. also can't wait to see the new "PLACE" you move into..
Thanks dude. The new spot is gonna be next level, there's things in the works 🤘🏻
Like anything it takes some time to get in the groove and figure things out. I'm slowly getting there now that I've had more time with it
@@leestuart38 Yup, same boat here!
@@leestuart38 Thanks for the insights! Much appreciated. Keep up the great work!
Congratulations buddy I know that must have felt great to finally get it and to get it up and running. I can’t wait to see what you do with this thing.

Lee Stuart You’re welcome brother 👊🏻
Thats so cool that you jumped into wide format printing. Ive been in the screen printing game for like 3 years and I watched pretty much all your SP videos. Now literally like 3 weeks ago I went trough the same thing as we got into wide format printing too . I will activate the damn bell on you channel now lol. Thanks for sharing your experiences brother!!
Haha hell ya man, congrats on getting into it too 👊🏻

It's frustrating figuring them out yourself, but I suggest going online and finding a repair manual (paid a few bucks for a pdf copy) I've saved SO much in repair costs. I have an old Roland SP300V but I print a ton of stickers and lots of HTV transfers. These machines are BEASTS!
I have a repair manual now, I had a friend who works with rolands send one over. It'll get put to use when my warrant runs out haha
So true when you spend so much money u want it to work. I hope when I get my in a few days or a week I don't have issues. Good luck😊
Thanks, you too 🤘🏻
First off welcome printer hell.
And laminating is a whole mother ball game. A lot of trial and error
Ps. Bro try the Hp family just join with the Hp 315 Latex ink
I came here to say this, join us on the latex side, much easier to use and user friendly. (And pretty sure theres a RIP that works on Mac).
I won't let a machine beat me 😂. Now that it's dialed in I love it, super pumped to finally have one
Epic, I feel for you, been there. When you know more than the tech...
The first guy was useless, the second was a big help. It's like that with a lot of equipment manufacturers in this industry
Thankfully everything is running smoothly now
@@leestuart38 i try to be the same way in what ever i do also. I don't like to get rubbish, so why would the customer.
Love the channel dude. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see your vinyl videos.
Thank you so much for this. I just started and in the market for a large format printer.
It's a great machine for the most part. The cutting isn't great but the print quality is amazing when it's dialed in. I had a rough time getting started but it's been a workhorse for me since I added a stand alone cutter
"I can smell for miles" I know that feeling. WAAAAAA-SAAAAAAAAAA-BAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY!
Two days trying to get a equipment that's designed to work on a PC to work on a mac and twenty minutes to make it work on a PC as intended; I see now!

The cd-rom thing had me laughing so hard, amazing to see that come with a $25,000 machine 😂
@keith Applegarth The Disc is optional, you can download the RIP software online easily.
I got my Roland to work with Paralells, no issues. And you can plug a wireless adaptor to RJ45 to the machine and print wireless with your mac too !

That's the same way I ended up running it
@@leestuart38 This was written before the end of the video. 😳
PLEASE share how you calibrated it!!! I have one too and would love to be able to fine tune it.
Sounds a little fishy to me. I would ask to see some test prints off of it to check for any major issues like banding
@@leestuart38 Okay thanks. It looks like its a different model. Its a 540 but its silver not Blue so I'm guessing its a lower quality model. Do you have any idea where I can find the differences between the 540s?
I work with this machine at work everyday and its pretty easy to run. The laminator is very simple too. I learm to used in one day.

It’s so cute!! Awesome first buy!
Dude, I had the worse experience with my purchase as well. If you can help me get mine dialed in too, that would be great!! I would like the colors solid as well 🤘🏼
Nice!!! Goals af!
👊🏻👊🏻
Not sure what your Labor situation is, but I’ll tell you I waited wayyy too long to figure out that part. Documentation and process control killed me once I couldn’t do everything myself anymore.
We fixed the computer problem by picking up cheap windows towers and treating them like control panels for each machine. One for the plotter, one for the embroidery workstation, etc. they never have to be updated or moved. And we’re still running one machine with floppy disks... 😂
That's my plan now, I'm gonna have to buy 3 pcs to get everything I have or on its way running. Super annoying but at least it works 😂
@@leestuart38 Ahh, I did wonder about colour accuracy. Good stuff dude, hope it all works out for you - looking forward to the next video!
What did the tech adjust? I have a 42 inch older model and want to check to see if I can get better prints.
Thanks

I've got it dialed in real nice now 🙌🏻. I'll definitely be documenting a lot of what this machine does as I learn
You'd have less connection problem if you connect the printer and computer through a router instead of directly connecting them. That router doesn't even need an internet connection, but it would handle all the connection protocols.
While he was getting this awesome machine in motion..I got an online nuclear physics degree.
Damn, that was a massive sacrifice. Hurt to see the sand blasting & powder coating booth going down.
I was looking at the exact same machine before the covid thing came along. I still dont know if i should go for that or the mimaki. But seeing the issue you had..i dont know..need to look more into it.

Nice, congrats on the new gear. I went with a heated laminator, they do a much better job and work easier with heavier materials
Im planning to print a lot of vynil for t-shirts, banners, canvas, some car decals and vynil for walls.
what do you suggest? thank you for your time and for sharing great information.

Which would you recommend?
I have been in this business since 2009, my first Roland vs540 and I continue working as the first day I completed it, I am very happy, but I want to move to the new technology, but I am afraid! All the reviews are crazy., The ink is always expensive, and my configuration CMYKLcLm and everything I do from 2 iMac. With High Sierra, and for the Catalina 4.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 design, I have been running my business since 2009, everything I deliver to my clients with impressive color ranges, always satisfied! What laminator do you recommend
@@KtuluLeaderRise DEPENT on your bodge, Royal Sovereign, Seal, Gbc...
Laminating is really hard I've learned haha, but I'm slowly figuring it out
problem is you went with a Roland. I had a few and nothing but problems. Got a SureColor S80600 and its been heaven since.
Their stuff isn't readily available where I'm at in Canada, it's down to Roland or Mimaki and I liked the color setup on the Roland better
In my Mac I had "Virtual MAchine" sectioned in 2.
one for mac and the other for windows... and justa as eazy, comand tabs between one and the other. super eazy.

Have you had any issue with middle pinch rollers leaving tracks in a print? Boards said to only use outer rollers but I can't figure that out.
No they don't at all. They only way it would do that is if you backed up a print that wasn't dry, which there would be no reason for doing
cool video lee congrats on the printer awesome stuff man

I does not. It has an estimated ink consumption but it's not super helpful

Honestly hate the caldera stuff. They sent it over to try out and was not a fan at all
@@leestuart38 you may be one of the few lol. Caldera is the Cadillac of rip softwares lol.
Lee, keep the laminator. Swap to a Latex or if you need eco solvent get an Epson, or if you need a print/cut Mimaki. The easy maintenance of latex and color superiority of the Epson. I'm 2/3 thru video and hoping the end you decide against keeping it by the end...
Now that it's set up right, love it. Great machine

Just be careful keeping that in your garage. If it gets too cold it can cause problems with the print heads. Ideally, you want to keep it in a temperature controlled environment.
There's full time heat and air conditioning out there
simply buy a surface pro and they should install versa works remotely, install a few profiles and presto and should be all set. We have a dedicated surface just for our printer. Roland is great not sure why so much trouble to get going BUT you will love that machine. Good luck.
