Features I like about the SM-818:
Low Cost when on Sale.
Included 18650 which is Replaceable. Works with any Unprotected Button Top 18650.
MP3 Player Remembers Track, and Track Position.
Speaker has Great Audio.
Headphone Jack provides Stereo Playback for the MP3 function.
FM, and Shortwave Reception is Surprisingly Good.
No Low Level Hiss on Headphones.
Compact Size. Shorter than the CC Pocket.
Features that could be Added or Improved on:
Increase Capacity of Included Battery.
Improve MW Reception. Internal RFI keeps it from Receiving Faint Signals. (mods help here)
Overall, this is an Awesome Radio for $12 or Under. If it is any higher, I would wait for a Sale. A perfect radio to work on if your into Medium Wave listening. Its Compact Size, and the Power of an 18650 is a Great Combination for when you are on the Move.

It's a shame that MW (AM) gets no respect sometimes from manufacturers. Otherwise this is a very fun machine. I hope you do a ferrite coil mod AM bandscan on this radio soon :)
Hej i agree with you in Sweden where i live the AM band is almost completely gone idon't like that but for you guys and girls in the US or other, parts of the world a good AM radio is nice to have take care and have nice friday. .

I have looked a lot at this pocket radio, it is also sold under a different brand on other websites like you also showed like that it has shortwave. The fact that the AM band is not that good doesn't matter to me because in Sweden the AM band is almost completely gone wich idon't like but it seams to be a nice pocket radio for FM and shortwave. So yes i think i will buy this radio a nice little camping radio take care Todderbert and have a nice evening.
I got one of those a while back when you showed it on one of those RUclips suggestion windows I get on my phone. It's a pretty good sounding chunky thing.
That external AM antenna reminded me of the one that plugs into the top of my County Comm GP-7 to improve AM. It has an internal one but works a lot better with the external (and it can be rotated without rotating the radio).

It uses Mini-USB. That would imply this is quite old stock, maybe 10+ years old. Apparently Mini-USB has been deprecated since 2008.
We had Skywave SSBs with the Mini Jack not to long ago. Some companies are slower to adopt the new generation jacks.
Not necessarily. I have radios that are much newer than that with Mini USB; it's still part of the USB Standard.
Sadly, it’s not rare enough for new radios to have mini vs micro or C.
I have this radio and it has the same AM reception problem. If someone isn't brave enough to open up this radio for antenna surgery, pairing this with a Terk Advantage loop antenna made my radio's AM reception very sensitive day and night.
Oh, nice to hear. Was wondering if a loop, or loop stick would "cure" the problem.
Awesome. I don’t those abilities. Great recommendation. Let us suppose I were to keep the external and some attach an am FerrIte Rod Antenna or any am Antenna from the back,would that fix the RFI problem on AM?
@@reyesalejandrolandaverdeol3181 I need to test this, but others have said a simple loop, or ferrite twin coil system near the radio cures it...I'm not to sure on that, but worth a try before opening it up to solder in a new external loopstick.
A bit of foil on top of the flat top turns it into a button top
Risk of shorting the cell… fire is expensive enough, button 18650s are cheap enough…

@@Pyjamarama11 Yes. Fire. From a shorted out 18650. One bit of foil gets under the positive terminal and you risk having one. 18650s aren't AA cells.

SM-818 = 18650 battery charger with the radio for free. Not sure how big the MW market is in China but they got domestic shortwave all over the bands 24 hours a day. EDIT: Just dawned on me, this desktop I am using does not have a SD card slot of any kind, so this radio would actually fix that. 2nd EDIT: maybe if the computer can read it.
Having been in China for a while I can comment about radio there. MW/AM is very much used for broadcast stations, same for SW. as well as FM. Radio is very much old-school in PRC. there's no DAB, no HD-Radio, and no RDS.
You can get USB SD Card Readers pretty cheaply, that's how I get old radio shows onto my Micro SD Cards.
I'm all in for a modded version of this one
I can do a basic mod of attaching an external ferrite antenna, but I'm not keen on how to mount it properly. It has to be at least six inches away from the radio to avoid the RFI. I'm planning to showcase the mod in a future MW bandscan video with this radio.

Wonder what the run time would be with the 18650...
The stock battery is not great, but if you upgrade to a 3500mAh, I expect run times for twenty or so hours. It does use a larger, bass styled speaker, and the BT module seems to run all the time.
You sound entirely too awake at 2AM! Does the terk loop help the am reception at all… love the mp3… and FM sure seemed good!
