Apparently he hated being called Charlie and not Charles. So much so that when pianist Walter Norris who played with him accidentally called him Charlie, Norris had to leave town immediately and fled to Europe.
Trini Jazz...Born in Trinidad and Tobago. Recognized as a child musical prodigy, the young Hazel Scott was awarded scholarships to study classical piano at the Juilliard School from the age of eight. She was the first person of African Descent to have their own television show in America, The Hazel Scott Show, which premiered on the DuMont Television Network on July 3, 1950.
MrTeatreeoil she somehow was chased out of the country during the communist red scare that was led by sen. joe McCarthy. She was probably blacklisted for "unamerican acts or beliefs", I'd have to research more to find the exact reasons she was accusef
She has such a lovely voice when she talks. When I hear her sing its like something I've never heard before. I would think anyone can sing like her but its probably difficult having to sing really low and still sound perfect. Wow no high notes, no over the top singing and she still sounds lovely.

Hazel Scott and her contemporary Dorothy Donegan were two of the greatest pianists that ever took to the black and whites. Both shared in common a powerful left hand jive!
Why haven't we heard more about this amazing lady. I came here via reading about her husband Adam Clayton Powell. Nice to see she had Charlie Mingus with her.
She sounds a little like Billie Holiday, a little grovel in her voice! And Charlie Mingus accompanying her, whoa, loved Charlie Mingus's 'Fables of Faubus' in the 1960's. He was an incredible activist, always for the underdog, always in there fighting for civil rights. What a find tonight, Hazel Scott, Love her!
Read about her on and off for years, but this is the first time I've ever seen a clip of her performing. I think she was blacklisted, which might be part of the reason she's been forgotten, unfortunately.
Wow! Thank you for posting this. I always wondered what Hazel Scott sounded like after reading about her in King of the Cats - a biography of Adam Clayton Powell. Definitely a heavy cat herself.
Someone suggests in the comments that this should have way more views. It’s my impression that after today’s Candorville comic strip there will be lots more views. 1-5-22.
This is a beautiful interpretation. However it's not the same as we are seeing. Her fingers are not playing what we hear. It's obvious during the solo at least.
I don't think the footage in the video is the same audio we're hearing. As someone else had pointed out in the comments, she's actually singing the entire solo (you can start hearing it from around 2:06), for example. In the footage, she's grinning and laughing and doesn't look like she could hum while doing it. Although, in that wide shot when she says, "...Charlie Mingus on bass, and Rudy Nichols on drums..." is does look like she's saying it and we can see the bass guy in the frame with her. *shrug Maybe the real Mingus didn't want to be on-camera?
She did indeed have a trio with Charles Mingus. And BTW Mingus was not “black”. He had a mixed-race father and a Chinese mother. Probably one reason he hated racism so much.
poetcomic1 I don’t know if you are a man or not but maybe our black women wouldn’t feel the need to resort to weaves had our black insecure mama-boy men wouldn’t have mocked black women for their “kinky” hair textures. First, you back men complain about their short hair then mock them when they try to dress it up with a weave. Plus you black men always wanna date lighter skinned women or outright white women. So make you mind up😡

When you can introduce Charles Mingus as 'my bass player', you know you're a bloody big deal XD
Dude was a young in rihht here
Apparently he hated being called Charlie and not Charles. So much so that when pianist Walter Norris who played with him accidentally called him Charlie, Norris had to leave town immediately and fled to Europe.
Exactly what I was thinking. What a legacy !
She was a big Deal.
Equally if Mingus would address Hazel as "my pianist".
This should have way more views. Beautiful woman, voice, and talent. Love her!
So grateful for people who share otherwise I would not have known this lady. She lives on forever.

If you listen closely, you hear her humming the whole improv section amazing.
as of today why they kept her hidden?
She was forced to leave the country during the McCarthy era
Chris Dilks I don't understand that one hmm do you understand why she had to leave the country?

Chris Dilks what year did that happen?
yeah she and Dorothy Donegan were just super talented and wow how did they not become well known...smh
I love how you can hear her scatting along with her solo in the recording
...such talent!!
I can't believe this. Absolutely wonderful in every respect.
Wow, Hazel plays that piano! Thank you for sharing this rare treasure.
Mingus on bass
She’s amazing. Awesome arrangement, scatting along with her chord solo! Wow.

🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹 my homelands rare gem‼
My abuela played and sang Latin/Cuban jazz!!!
I just found these old videos and am loving discovering artists I never knew. Thanks!
I really never knew she had such a lovely voice
One of the most beautiful women to have ever lived, no doubt.
Very beautiful woman who was also a great jazz pianist and singer. Loved her fast-stride playing on "Taking A Chance On Love." Just amazing!!!
She's very beautiful. Way too beautiful
Never heard of her before today. Beautiful voice! I can listen to her all day.
Utterly fabulous in every respect.
She is music...that skill isn't normal...all God!
I love your comment
Good ol' days when artists had talent.
Andrew Marcus Artists have and have always had talent. Art is subjective as well, so really you don’t need talent to be loved by people, which is ok.
Amen

Haha! Near 8 years on youtube and not a single dislike! Why would there be? This cat was truly an inspiration!
Why haven't we heard more about this amazing lady. I came here via reading about her husband Adam Clayton Powell. Nice to see she had Charlie Mingus with her.
She had talent, beauty, and Charles Mingus on bass.

Photos show that she kicked it with Billie and Lena Horne.
So beautiful and talented ! Happy Birthday Ms. Scott !!
Always a very favorite rendition of this jazz standard Thank you NightMusic tv growing up
Simply splendid!
Amazing, Big Huge talent. You know she had her own show?
Video grandioso!
The Best ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Her talent is immense and yet she gets little to no recognition. Same with the very talented Beryl Booker.
Read about her on and off for years, but this is the first time I've ever seen a clip of her performing. I think she was blacklisted, which might be part of the reason she's been forgotten, unfortunately.
she was a great jazz pianist and vocalist
I love her so much

Charlie Mingus was honored in a Joni Mitchell album.
Thanks!
She was awesome!..Imagine if she and Nat King Cole had got together!!
Wonderful!!! And what about Mingus? Yeah!
Any of her latest performances Justasittinandarock? Prior to her passing? She was amazing and beautiful!!
My Trini sister...
Mingus on Bass!
I remember seeing her in a movie as a child as movies back then didn't always feature a lot of us Black people. I was transfixed. I still am.

That is not Charles Mingus unless there are two who play bass. The more famous Mingus was black.
The famous one also (according to pianist Walter Norris) hated being called Charley. He would apparently fly into a rage!
I don't think the footage in the video is the same audio we're hearing.
