  • In this video we'll take a quick look at the Olmec culture that was predominant in ancient Mexico between 1200-500 BCE. The Olmecs were one of the most influential cultures in Mesoamerica and came up with several innovations and artistic styles that influenced their descendants, including the Maya, Zapotec and Aztec civilizations.

I've always thought it would be cool to make a sprawling epic a la "Lord of the Rings" set in a Mesoamerican rather than European fantasy world.

If this story is true, which I highly doubt it, I cannot believe that a history teacher would say that the Aztecs were the first inhabitants in mexico. The first inhabitants were hunters and gatherers, so this is why I doubt your story. What history teacher wouldn't know that the first inhabitants of all the Americas from the tip of Alaska to the bottom tip of Argentina were hunters and gatherers.
I also highly disbelieve that your history teacher would not know that the Maya, Zapotec, Teahuacanos, and other people from what today is mexico came before the Aztecs in mexico. Even the Olmec civilization had predecessors themselves as well, maybe not from the land that today is mexico, but from the land that today is Guatemala, those people came even before the Olmec, they are for the moment known as Pre-Olmec and the Monte Alto Culture of Guatemala.

The olmics were a small tribe of Caribbean African immigrants who occupied the area before Aztec or Mayan tribs, but they were not dominate enough to keep going and others either adopted them or killed them. Which is why we don't hear about them at all.

Mesoamerica is a name Europeans and Western scholars made-up. As many things, they try to tell historiography from a Eurocentric point of view. Tecemuseh is also underated af. The Iriqouis and Algonquin are some of the most underated bits of history i know of as a Nahautl Otomi. The Iriqouis story would be like if all of humanity united to fight against an alien force and then there are some human factions that side with the Aliens. Then you find out that the Aliens aren't united and that there are 3 competing alien factions and so you try to side with the rival one and try to learn their ways to advance humanity, start adopting their weapons into your system and you have to do it fast. In the end a 4th alien faction that rebeled against the other 2 finally goes in for the kill and then places all of humanity in concentration camps. It reminds me of the The Meji restoration era except w/ o the genocide.
Here is a quote from Tecumseh .
“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and
Demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life,
Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and
Its purpose in the service of your people.
Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend,
Even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and
Bow to none. When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the food and
For the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks,
The fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and nothing,
For abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision.
When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts
Are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes
They weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again
In a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”
      ― Chief Tecumseh

Its arguably the first native American civilization, even older then the olmacs.
Also i recommend the north American civilization like the Mississippi culture particularly the cahokia or the mound builders not to mention puebloans culture/civ like mesa verde and Pueblo Bonito. They were lots of complex civilization in north America prior before European settlers.
And more mesoamerican civilizations like monte alban and Teotihuacán. The Aztec are usually more popular and can make people overlook other important civs in that Region.

The Olemecs definitely had a major impact on the Maya and Huastec(Northern Maya), the long count is one example as well as artistic style. Teotihuaucan is a likely candidate for cultural mother in the Mexican highlands. Also, the Zapotec and Mixtec had early, unique and enduring societies as well. I'm sure the Olemecs at least inspired the centralization of neighboring cultures. Who knows, maybe they are the ancestors to the Maya?

@@DC_R 1) First of all, the sculpture you mention is a howler monkey statue. You can Google images of other Olmec figurines, masks, etc, that depict Native American facial features such as broad nose, big cheekbones, straight hair, and more.
      2) It was called "the Ethiopian sea" because there was a set of territories that were called Ethiopia (unrelated to the modern country), bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
      3) Experts have no evidence to confirm the Olmecs used something similar to the paper for writing. And stop saying papyrus because it isn't.
      4) Until now, we don't have enough information to say that the Incans never developed a writing system, in fact, they developed something similar called "Quipus". In case you don't consider it a writing system, this answer is for you: Because they didn't and never had a need to, simple.
      5) Egypt is the birthplace of the papyrus (which is different from the paper), and?...
      6) It's called coincidence, why don't you realize the multiple differences that both sculptures have? Like the position of the arms, in the anatomy, the facial features, the hat (nemes) of Osiris, the material with which both are made, and so on.

Planned settlements: ceremonial centers, stone sculptures, first great cities in the new world. 3. Slash and Burn Cultivation. 4. Theocracy: Sun and Rain Gods, Priesthood. 5. Ball Court: first ball game. Population: 20 to 25,000. 6. Specialized trades: stone cutting and sculpture.

Everything post-chavin in the Andean region (at least within the modern day borders of Peru and neighboring border areas) has something in common with Chavin, it's impossible not to. Caral in Peru was the first city and civilization of South America, but Chavin was the first high culture of the Andes. Chavin had a complex religion and an easily identifiable distinct art style that influenced other cultures and empires that followed. (this style emerged before the height of Chavin, for example in the Cupisnique culture, but was perfected and spread the most by Chavin).

Cause I have strong olmec features, and knowing that my mom was probably native to a culture. But please respond I need your help 😭

In the letters of columbus, he described natives with straight hair and not black like ghanans.

@@MiloSatori actually if you took time sat down put race and colour code politics aside
Because in history it didn't exist and look at the native tribes of the Americas
You have those in the North that look european well the vikings did stumble upon newfoundland well before columbus set sail
You have tribes that look east indian Polynesian and African
Let's face it if the vikings sailed the North oceans and found the americas and the Polynesian sailed the southern oceans and found the americas
Why couldn't say the phonecians who were great seaman or the mandigo or the benim sailed there by accident or on purpose
      TO think otherwise is futile
As the sea current takes boats from west Africa directly to central America this is a proven fact
We even experimented making an ancient phonecian boat the ancient way and sailed it to miami from Africa it took two months
Look up the equitorial currents between the two continents
I'm not a conspiracy theorist lol
But the Portuguese sailed for African shores in 1415 in the same century the sailed to the Americas trying to find India do me a favour
Vasco de gamma went to India by sailing past the Cape of good hope
After all they have had land trade routes for several thousands of years from the levant to India
      They knew land was there
The vikings traded with the moors of North Africa
The phonecians traded tin from Britain
People need to use some common sences and critical thinking
Was there a mass African migration NOPE did some Africans find thier way there YES
when you look at distance the vikings in the North sailed from Denmark to Iceland without a map
When you look at the travel the phonecians did in the Mediterranean basin
The Polynesian from island to island
And the mesoamericans did in the yucatan peninsula and with the carribean islands
You would be a fool to think ancient America had no links with Africa

@@daz3350 Africa was, even in the time of the ancient Egyptians, far more technologically advanced than the Native American civilisations (not to discredit them though). Wouldn't you think that the Olmecs and pre-classical Mayans would want horses, wheeled vehicles, bronze, etc. Since they didn't have these and there are no mentions of the Americas be the Mycanean greeks, Minoan Greeks, classical Greeks or Phoenicians (the great traders in the Mediterranean), we can say that they could travel to the Americas but didn't.

The idea of the Olmecs as a mother culture to me also sounds like people are trying to impose a European history on central America where the Olmecs are placed as an American version of ancient Greece. While it might be sound you should probably be vary of assuming that history in the rest of the world played out like in Europe.

it wouldnt be surprising if most later meso-american civilizations were inspired at least by Olmec/Zapotec culture, i mean we all have inspiration from older cultures. today's world figures it optimal to count minutes to 60, mostly thanks to Babylonian culture's advancements in maths, who probably took some of their findings from Sumerian maths
