I always love and appreciate your kind comments and support of the channel and what I love doing in the outdoors. That big patch of white in the water when I was using my binoculars was 2 swans. Hello Hiker girl. I haven't been to that national park yet. I'm surprised to see that there are not many people for a National Park like that, entrance and camping fee is definitely worth it, and it looks well kept. That sunset is absolutely gorgeous! Nice car camp setup. I watched your other video about your car camp setup. I am so jealous of that solitude. That's one of the nice things about winter, fewer people! Love your content! Thank you for taking me along, I'll be around! Take care
I think not many ppl were there because it was so cold and a blizzard was supposed to hit that night after I left. Love off-season visits. Either way, I am very happy to have had that National Park mostly to myself! Thanks a bunch for commenting and watching! ~RVA~
Hey my friend.. Sorry I missed this live. Really cool to have the food storage cabinet built into the picnic table. I've never seen that before. The beach looked amazing! Cozy looking car camp. Cheers my friend!
Hey there DC Outdoors. No worries on missing the premiere, we are all so busy. Very happy that you had time to give it a watch today, greatly appreciate that. I had never seen a picnic table like that either. I thought that was pretty darn cool myself. Car camping was warm and cozy. Didn't get cold at all, but if I would have been in my tent, I would have been cold. Always prefer my tent, but car camping comes in so handy when the temps drop to extend my season of doing what I love out there . ~RVA~

Can't wait to go back again and see if I can see more of the horses myself. I love that they roam free here and aren't penned like at Chincoteague. They run wild and free and are truly feral. Thanks a bunch for stopping by and checking out my video. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl I love watching your camping videos, I get new ideas on where I can camp next. My goal is to camp/ visit at every VA state park. I got 3 plan this year 😁
@@thetravelouscrew Aww thank you! Yes I am doing the 41 VA state park challenge myself. But I am hiking all of them and just camping at some. They are all so different and unique in their own way, right? Love your 3 year plan! ~RVA~
Yes, and the Cumberland Island ones too. Someone on Instagram mentioned something about the GH ponies came from Assateague. I meant to research that but I never did. It would make total sense. Appreciate you stopping by. ~RVA~
Spent many summers here early in our marriage. Lots of good flounder fishing, and except for pony penning days, lots of uncrowded beaches. Just subbed ... looking forward to more!!😎😎
Flounder fishing sounds so fun. So much beach to explore and to find your own little spot. I can only imagine how busy it is for penning days. I always love less crowded places to explore. So this time of the year was awesome. Thanks a bunch for subbing and welcome to my RUclips family! ~RVA~
I heard about his place. Thank you for taking us with you! Its like you had the peninsula to yourself! Best camp site! couldn't get enough of that sunrise. You gave us so much knowledge on the horses and ponies!
Winter time is the best time to go, if you want the place all to yourself. I really enjoy off season hiking and camping since you pretty much always avoid the crowds.
Yes, Tom! I can't wait to go back and pitch my tent in the sand and watch the ocean from my tent. It's a long trek up the eastern shore to get there, but totally worth it. Hope you can make it there one day! Thanks so much always for your awesome support of the channel, appreciate it more than you know. ~RVA~
Hi RVA. What a great video. Thank you for taking us along on your trip. Sorry I missed the premiere but was nice watching and reading the comments too. Those waves and views were amazing. Fun there were so many different types of critters. Thank you!
No worries on missing the premiere, we are all busy living life :-). Just happy and grateful you were able to watch it today. I'm a huge animal lover and talk to them all. LOL! ~RVA~
Great video ! I've been going to the Virginia part of Chin/Assat every year since I was a small kid and I'm now 66yrs old. When you cross over the bridge from Chincoteague into the refuge over the bridge and out to the beach you are on Assateague Island which does run north up into Maryland. Chincoteague Island is separate from Assateague Island at the small bridge. You do have to pay to get into this part of Assateague Island. Thanks for bringing us along. I will certainly check out the Maryland side in the winter. Looks great. Blessings, Teri
Thank you. You are lucky to have grown up in such an awesome place. Actually, you don't have to pay to get in the VA side of the Chicoteague Wildlife Refuge at the bridge if you pay to get into Assateague. The entry fee for either work for both parks which the ranger said most people don't realize. It's written on the receipt that no one reads LOL. Yes, it's the same 37 mile island (Delmarva Penisula) 2/3 is MD, and 1/3 is VA. Yes, I actually like the Assateague side better. Appreciate you stopping by and checking out my video. Come back anytime. ~RVA~
That looks like a very cool place to visit, and the horses are a definitely a bonus. This is another place I’m adding to my list of places to check out. 🤙
You should for sure! Beware it is a very different place in the summer time. Every campsite is booked well in advance and well take your bug spray cuz those black flies and mosquitos will eat you alive. Cooler weather is the best time to really see all the wildife, with no one around. ~RVA~
Hey RVA Girl, great hike! So nice that you got to see the deer and ponies! The three walks were wonderful, and the beach, and camping, looked so nice. What a beautiful place to visit. We are thinking of hitting the road in our truck camper in a year or so when I retire, and this will be sure to be on our list!
That sounds like an amazing plan to have. Sort of my plan too, if not before then if we can figure out how to work on the road. Thanks a lot for dropping by and watching. ~RVA~
I'm going to have to check that place out, camping on the beach like that looks awesome, not looking forward to dealing with the sand but to be able to wake up right at the water would be worth it. Awesome video as always!
Yes, it is an incredible place to check out for sure. There's not too many places where you can beach camp, so when I come across one of those locations, I just have to go! Thanks so much for watching this one. ~RVA~
A beautiful winters day to explore an amazing looking National Park☀❄😊 Loved those long shadows from the low winter sun, the beautiful sunset, the animal prints in the sand and how deserted it all was👍 The car set up looked pretty cosy and you had a beautiful sunrise☀The deer, ponies and birds were all cool🦆🦌🐴😊
Stunning sky for the sunset and sunrise. I always love the colors in the sky around water. Amazing experience having the National Park to ourselves. That's not something that happens, ever. LOL! Thanks a bunch for checking out this video. ~RVA~

I loved that the little sika deer aren't afraid of people. While you should always observe wildlife from a distance, he kept coming closer and closer to me. Thanks a bunch for checking this one out. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl it was stunning, it hardly happens that they are so tame that they stick around. It happens once in every Blue Moon and it is truly magical and unforgettable! Great catch! 👍
A bit quicker for you to get up there than me. Never have been a fan of the bridge-tunnel either. It really is a special place these parks. Loved this trip. Thanks Dave for watching. ~RVA~

For several years in a row I'd go to the Pine Grove Campground at Chincoteague island. Bro,, I would go to the crabbing peer right by the campground and get a solid 50 or so blue crabs. Haven't been there in like 12 years but that should be changing this summer! AJ's on the Creek is one of the best fine dining restaurants I ever went to. Food is so good on Chincoteague
You certainly visit and camp in some very beautiful locations, you got very close to some of those deer, and the lighthouse was lovely too 😉😊 great video and interesting snippet of history about the ponies on the island
I'm a former science teacher and well history buff, so I always try to add in a little bit of info without hopefully boring people watching, LOL! Those Sika deer were the absolute cutest, so petite. Happy to hear that you enjoyed this one. Love to hear that!! ~RVA~
Hi Jacqueline! What a fantastic place to have all to yourselves👍 Looked amazing for wildlife. Loved the little Sika deer! Deer are usually so shy , and they didn't seem bothered by your presence at all 😁 All the best👍😊
What I have found is that deer in the wild are very scared of humans. Deer in National Parks, not so much because generation after generation has been protected. Also people on farms etc feed the deer and almost befriend them as pets. A neighbor of mine when I lived in the mountains always feed the wild deer and turkeys that visited his property. It was a cool thing to see. ~RVA~
What a neat place! It looks like some of those deer may be fawns? Or do the adults have spots, too? Great tip about the pillow in the wheel well- if we ever end up getting the car setup going, that'll be a part of it. The sky gave you a couple of beautiful shows- don't you love that??
No those are Sika deer. They are miniature barrier island deer and they keep their spots in adulthood. Through evolution, they have gotten smaller, since there is less food on a sandy, salty barrier island. Whitetail deer are also in the video several times. This little deer could walk underneath of the whitetail it's so small. Their heads are so petite and cute. Ahh yes, the colors in the sky never cease to amaze me for sunsets and sunrises, especially coastal views. Thanks, Switchback! ~RVA~
There are also wild ponies on Cumberland Island Georgia where I go backing too. And in Corolla North Carolina. Would love to see some in AZ. Thanks a whole bunch for stopping by and checking out my video. ~RVA~
Awesome! Makes us even more bummed that our trip we had planned there got snowed out! Love the ponies/horses! Loved the campsite - very nice - it looked chilly & a bit windy - but those views and trails seemed well worth it!
You'll get back there. Definitely recommend it. I will be back to tent camp on the beach for sure and of course to look for more Assateague ponies! It's a dream to have the whole place to yourself this time of the year. A completely different scene in the summer. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl Oh we are sure! We are OK with less than ideal conditions at times if it means little to no crowds - it enhances the experience so much more!

3 short beautiful trails 👣 The wild horses was a awesome treat! Love the wood boardwalk ❤️ Kool seeing the sand tracks 🙂 Awe, I thought you were going pitch a tent. Beautiful all the same!
Too cold with the ocean breeze and the wind chill at 20 degrees. I only tent camp in 30 degrees and up. I kinda made that rule for myself. I enjoy it better that way. But you bet your bottom dollar that I will be back to pitch a tent in that sand before you know it! Such a great spot to wake up to that sunrise. But the car does come in handy for extending my hiking season this time of the year for sure. Thanks my friend for checking this one out. ~RVA~
Oh wow, that is an amazing compliment. Greatly appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much for subbing and welcome to my RUclips family. Very happy to have you. ~RVA~
No mosquitos or black flies this time of the year or sweating for that matter. I love hitting up places in the off-season just for those reasons. Thanks a bunch for stopping by and watching. ~RVA~
You just store your food in the box while you're gone from camp or your vehicle. The picnic tables open up on both sides. I have never seen these before so a really cool concept. Appreciate you stopping by and giving this one a watch. ~RVA~
It was so calmy and relaxing at our campsite with not a sole in sight on the beach. Grateful to have experienced those rate moments there. Appreciate it Lezley for stopping by and checking this one out. ~RVA~
I love those Indian names! Beautiful place, seeing the deer and the ponies, just great. I loved the paw prints of the fox! Car camping at the beach like that! Picknick table is very handy! 😁 All the best! See you soon, I hope! I'm trying to keep myself quarantained as much as possible the coming 2 weeks!
Yes girl, keep yourself isolated so you can fly across the ocean real soon! So many things are Indian names in this area from bays to towns. Love it as I have Indian descent in my heritage. ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl Hey, that's cool! It's nice to know where you came from. My family came from Germany quite a few generations ago. So I have a German name. 😁
I will probably go to Red Wing Roots Music Festival. It’s at Natural Chimneys. I volunteer there. I’ve been to all of them so far. It’s the only festival in which I have been to each one too. It’s a cool way to travel and camp.
Nice video! We love going to Assateague and camp there every summer (7yrs now)! One note: those storage boxes are actually for the horses! Useful for coons & seagulls, but are there for the horses. They are good at stealing food and getting into closed coolers! 😁
Thanks for checking this video out & stopping by. Oh, the park ranger at the visitor center told us they were mainly for the raccoons. But it totally makes sense for the horses as well. I didn't see as many horses as I wanted but that just gives me a reason to go back again. I prefer Assateague where they roam free vs being penned up at Chincoteague. I didn't realize that until I got down there that that was a difference between the 2 places. ~RVA~
Oh, I’m surprised by that! In all my years, they have warned about the horses for food storage concerns! I once accidentally dumped an entire pot of spaghetti and (wrongly) left it there on the ground. Next morning pre dawn we had an invasion of horses! We always see them… but this time was wild! I was sitting in my car with the door open grabbing my camera, legs out. Suddenly i had a horse head in my face, inside the car! I calmly tried to gently push her head out of my face & car. An unforgettable experience, for sure! 🤣 (I am same user as ucrazymat)
@@JenniferGarcia-px3qo Maybe it was someone new. The visitor center was closed and it was just someone through a window that we were talking to. I didn't see that many horses unfortunately. I wish I would have. They say the horses carry ticks and poison ivy and if you touch them you could get either so that was a close call for you in many ways.
Once again I am grateful for your place name pronunciations 🙏🏼 I got lost at ass... 🙄🤦🏻♂️ I love the contrasts here, beach, snow and sand, truly some stunning views.
Ha Ha, leave it to me with my southern accent! Yes, that is the correct pronunciation. The ass does sound funny right? I'm really digging, coastal camping in the winter, not quite as cold as in the mountains with single digits temps and below 0 wind chills. Thanks a bunch for your great comment and have a great weekend! ~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl Haha, I read all of these names wrong, the minute I hear you say it, I think well that's so obvious, of course it's pronounced that way . Your coastal winter camping videos are certainly standing out from the crowd.
@@AggyGoesOutdoors Aww thank you. You are very kind to say that. I love to visit off season places such as this to avoid the crowds. It really paid off this time!
Thanks for coming over and checking out my channel. Much appreciated. Jester is my girl! Love her and everything she does for the hiking community. ~RVA~
Much appreciate Gianna. Everything is stored in the car in small bins and bags in the front seats and floor boards and also in the back seat floor boards. The only thing we keep out of the car is the cooler, but we could still put it in the front seat if needed. I don't take a bunch of extra things. Just what I need. Hope that helps. ~RVA~
I am looking forward to this video! I hike solo (with my shepherd), I have backpacked with a friend before, but now I want to backpack (Three Ridges Wilderness) solo with my dog. I don't know why I am a bit hesitant to backpack solo. I know you backpack solo, any tips, please?
I have a video on 3 ridges. That is a tougher hike due to all the rocks. That hike from Reed's gap to the Harpers Creek shelter took a long time to go 7 miles. All day until 5pm. If you go to my channel and type in solo I do have few videos. You just have to be prepared, know where you are going, have the right gear, feel comfortable with your gear and just do it. The more you get out there and hike solo the better you feel each time you are out there. It's good to be hesitant, that means you have a little fear, and that's good. That protects you by being alert to your surroundings. Stop by and say hi tonight at 8:00pm for the video. ~RVA~
I agree with RVA Hiker Girl, the more you go solo, the more confident you will feel and you will come to enjoy those moments of complete solitude and the feeling of confidence you get. I only go solo in places I feel comfortable in and I give that a lot of thought prior to planning my solo trips.
@@garyoakman6187 Yes just looked at the map and it does run parallel to the AT. Very interesting. I don't know how I have never heard of this before. ~RVA~
It’s really great that you get out and able to share the videos. I look forward to them. I am 100 percent Virginian. I don’t venture out in winter. I hibernate and plan activities for the other three seasons. So far, I am going to Delfest. Never been. I am going to Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Never been there. I like to go to new places too. What camera do you use. I just use my phone camera.
I was born and raised in VA. Moved away in my 30's for 14 years but came back. So happy to hear you are enjoying the videos. I don't like being cold, but I hate not being able to be outside more, so I get out there anyway and try to make the best of it. Nice to hear about your upcoming trips in warmer weather. I just use my phone on all my vlogs, no fancy equipment. Not a techy person. Thanks for watching and commenting, really appreciate it. ~RVA~
Ahh thank you! So happy you like them. I always want to be a resource when people are researching places to go hike and explore. I have a 2020 Ford Escape SEL. Perfect amount of space in the back for 2 20" mattresses or 1 mattress with room to move around. Appreciate your very kind comment. ~RVA~
RVA hiker girl have you heard of the great eastern trail? It starts in Alabama and goes to NY state it parallels the AT thru VA and WVA in your part of VA I think.
Where am I most likely to see the wild horses up close? Assateague? From your video (which was wonderful), it looks like they are a distance away from you.
Dont go to Chincoteague if that is what you are looking for. They are all far away and you can barely see them as they are behind a fence. MD Assateague it where you want to go. I didn't see that many while I was there on this particular day. But they roam free there. You have to stay 40 feet away for safety and they will ticket you if you get closer than that fyi. ~RVA~
It’s been years since I was there. Enjoyed the video. Wished you had shown the town. If you did any video of it, would love to see it. I think there is a NASA base on the Virginia side. Maybe you know.
I don't really vlog about the towns I go to on my trips since my channel is about the outdoors, hiking and backpacking. I try not to keep my vids on the shorter side to 15-25 min and that is already very hard, LOL. But love hearing your input. Yes, I passed NASA going to Chincoteague. It's across from a smaller nature reserve. Tons and tons of big radar stations at NASA. They do launch rockets from there, one just launched in Jan. That would be cool to go see for sure. Thanks a bunch for taking the time to leave a comment. ~RVA~
Hey girl what type of tripod do you use while you are filming? I can almost see it in the reflection of your sunglasses lol. Gotta love those national seashores! Can you please put one in Arizona? Thanks 😆
Hey Jillian! I've had all kinds of tripods. Just cheap Amazon ones work great for me in different sizes, even after 150+ videos on RUclips. I'm a long-distance hiker (AT section hiker), so I need lightweight and something if I break out there, it won't break the bank to replace it. Ah Arizona! I want to come out there so bad - so many places on my list out your way I want to explore.
The video pretty much shows everything there is to do at Assateague. Chincoteague there are a ton of more trails that I didn't get to. Spending the day on the beach, watching horses, camping, fishing, hiking, and catching a sunrise or sunset. Take a lot of bug spray in the warmer months. Grab some blue crabs at a good restaurant. Not sure if that helps at all. ~RVA~

Hey Bulldog! A big thanks to ya for stopping by and giving this one a watch. Much appreciated my friend. ~RVA~
Three hikes in one trip, nice! Those horses reminded me of Grayson Highlands. Thanks, RVA!
Very cool. Never knew this place existed. Love to park my Van there. 👍😎🚐
Yes, Tom! I can't wait to go back and pitch my tent in the sand and watch the ocean from my tent. It's a long trek up the eastern shore to get there, but totally worth it.
LOL! ~RVA~

Hiya Dawn! Thanks a bunch for watching. This was 4 hours away from me, so an 8 hr drive in 2 days, but totally worth it.
~RVA~
I think I’ll wait until colder weather to visit. I’ve not been to Maryland in probably twenty years.
@@ReasontoLiveAdventures So many great hikes in MD. I really love that state.

~RVA~
@@RVAHikerGirl really cool that they retain their spots! They were definitely super cute!
And hey, if you wanted to see wild horses you gotta come see them along the salt river here in Arizona! There are a ton of them! Love the ponies! 😊😊
~RVA~

I love the contrasts here, beach, snow and sand, truly some stunning views.
Ha Ha, leave it to me with my southern accent! Yes, that is the correct pronunciation. The ass does sound funny right?
If you don't want to hike solo look up Trail Dames podcast or you tube. You may find people to hike with.

I see this was just posted, but when were you there? I thought it was shutdown in the coldest months. You are allowed to camp there in the offseason?
Just a few weeks ago. The National park is open year round and so is camping in of the 2 loops. Is does not shut down in the winter.
If i wanted to take my wife, son, and our family dog in the next month what suggestions would ypu be able or willing to offer? Please and thank you!
~RVA~
