The false nine has been a key tactic for some of footballs great sides. Pep Guardiola's Barcelona and Spains Euro and World Cup winning teams used it to incredible effect. But what actually is a false nine?
While not as common as traditional striker roles, the false nine continues to be embraced by teams looking to add unpredictability and creativity to their attacking play. Henry Cooke illustrates as Seb Stafford-Bloor writes.

@Peter S. Obviously you haven't seen much of Liverpool matches. Salah and Mane thrived because of Firmino's acumen in the false 9 position. His game wasn't always about scoring goals.
It’s good to see people appreciate Firmino !! He never scored more goals than salah or Mane but he was more important in that Team ! It’s not always numbers!

a really underrated false 9 in my opinion is Raul Jimenez, that guys distribution and creativity might be better than his actual goal scoring ability I love watching how he distributes and drops deep to open up so many passing options
Benzema fit the role as a false and true nine perfectly. During BBC he often played similarly to a false nine and did it wonderfully. Now with vini he's been a goal scoring machine as a true nine.
There should be a picture of Messi next to the term flase 9. He is the epidemy of that position and everything it encompases.

The difference between Messi/totti/Del piero and Firmino/Benzema is that the first is attacking midfielder/winger category they are fast in their game where they ends scoring a lot, while the other is a striker category, tactically and technically very composed to a slower range which forces them drop to midfield to link the dots between wingers and midfielders and confuse defenders tactically

Messi in barca popularized the role
One big team that didn't get a mention, but also used a false 9, even a pair of them was United in 2008, when they won everything that way.
They had Rooney and Tevez up front, but none of them played as a 9 really, they were all over the pitch, did a huge defensive job, started attacks from deep positons, were drifting to the wings too... That's why they allowed Ronaldo to score so many goals and kinda creared space for him.
Also Benzema was somewhat a false 9 while he played with CR7.

False 9 role would be in FIFA a CF Position, 4-3-3(5) formation. But dont confuse yourself with thinking that it is a Second Striker. A Second Striker plays a little deeper but he doesnt drop he stays still. (4-4-1-1/3-5-1-1), there are 2 formations with 2 Second strikers (4-3-2-1/3-4-2-1).
