fastest/easiest way I could figure it out, regardless of inversions: if it sounds weird and you can hear a major third in it, it's augmented. if it sounds weird and you don't hear a major third/you hear a minor third instead, it's diminished! thank you so much for the video!
For those finding it difficult distinguishing between diminished and augmented, if you can sing the wholetone scale mentally from highest to lowest note vice versa then it's augmented.
@@cofftps67yago94 I do, personally I know that Jeff Buckley's Dream Brother starts with a guitar riff which incorporates the augmented triad so I memorized the melody and just sing it along the chord, if it fits, then it's an augmented triad. So, find a song that uses the chord and you'll know
It's a lot easier to think about on piano than guitar. I never knew what augmented and diminished meant until hearing it this way. Now it makes sense. Thanks!
I distinguish between diminished and augmented because there is a diminished chord in the major scale so you can always imagine it resolving to major chord semitone above. For example bdim always feels it should resolve to C major in C
Thanks, second time through on this test and it's starting to make sense. I try not to think about my tinnitus too much since it's quite loud and constant and is accompanied by hearing loss. So any progress I make for me is much appreciated.
just letting u know that i play this everyday repeatedly. im a college student for audio engineering online for los angeles film school. I am still struggling with training my ear with the chords. Can you break them down more for us in another video? Make another way for people to identify them. I am getting familiar with my circle of 4ths and 5ths but my ear needs a better way to train.
@@obl1xif_y981 Well, I mean ppl enter college at different levels. Some are pretty strong musically/instrumentally but don't have the same music theory background 🎼🎶 (I think many high schools don't offer AP Music Theory, for one). Like I know many teachers, private or at school, can introduce kids to some theory, but it's not normally at the same depth comparatively, at least in my observation
I literally have no understanding of music, but Augmented sounds questioning/nervous, Major sounds hopeful/warm, Minor sounds hopeless/dreadful, and diminished sounds suspenseful/tragic.
I have gotten help from www.musictheory.net/lessons before - their lessons are simple enough to follow. For a really deep look I would recommend taking a class at a community college. That would be most helpful in filling the gaps, plus it's sequential.
@@StephanieDouglassMusic oh thank you so much for the link, I actually went to a music school (I'm from Costa Rica) but the professor was really bad, I do plan enroll in another school some day, in the meantime I'll check that link.
Lemme just give a small life hack... To those like me, who can't tell dim apart from aug, dim resolves to a *major* and aug resolves to the *relative minor*...so just try to predict if the chord you heard resolves to a major or a minor and life's easy...
For example 9, what notes are you using please? I'm really confused because I've been using the song, oh when the saints, to identify the root and perfect fifth interval using oh and saints, but this one i swear just doesn't work with this pattern, does my oh when the saints thing not work?
I have to be the first person who might be tone-deaf trying to pass a Music 101 class... I loved the ear training but I keep mixing up minor and diminished chords.
There are three (3) basic major triads, three (3) basic minor triads, one basic diminished triad, but no basic augmented triads. An augmented triad is too wide to ever be basic.

this really helped!!
thank you so much
if the chord sounds weird and you can hear a james bond'esque sound and maybe a major third in there thats an augmented triad for ya
For those finding it difficult distinguishing between diminished and augmented, if you can sing the wholetone scale mentally from highest to lowest note vice versa then it's augmented.
Do you have some advices for other 95% of people who don’t know how to sing whole tone scale ?

I feel like I can hear the difference between augmented and diminished when it’s high but find it difficult in the lower tones
same!
Every time I feel cocky, I try one of these videos to feel humble.
Merci.
When I hear augmented chord it immediately remind me of the first chord in Oh Darling. Nailed it every time and in all inversions.
that´s a good tip actually :D

Thanks for the exercise , they are very helpful
I found out that diminished chords really sounds like dominant7 chords (coz it’s basically dominant7 without the root) and it helps me a lot
Thank you for spreading the gospel of music😎😎😎🙏🙏🙏
That was super useful, Stephanie! Thank you!!
Can you make an ear training video distinguishing between major 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7th, half-diminished 7th, and fully diminished 7th chords?
Yes! I actually planned one out a few months ago and never recorded it. I'll work on that this weekend.
Awesome stuff! Thanks
OMG! Thank you!

Thank you, I only got 25 out of 30, exam in a few days, better keep practicing. I'm struggling a bit with triads/ interval in written theory. 😁😊🙏🌺🌺🌺🌺
Keep working on it!
@@StephanieDouglassMusic thank you!
how did it go?
This is great. Thanks much!

Sure, I can work on that. Would it be more helpful to have an explanation at the beginning of the video, or after I give the answers?
College and ur still on this? Lol

2nd part 'example 5'
That is also a diminished!!!sounded minor to me😬....very difficult to catch.👍👍thanks
Same thing happened to me
Can you make an ear training session where the goal is to find out which inversion of a triad is being played?
I like that idea!
Super helpful and easy!
Thanks for the good contents
This helped alot thanks!
Can u say how to find out the diminished and augmented chords differently.
If it sounds squishy, or like it could go somewhere, it's diminished. Augmented chords could sound more "far apart."
@@StephanieDouglassMusic
Thank u
example five of part two that inversion was tricky!
(i was very unsure and guessed augmented but it was a diminished)
Thank you soo helpful😊❤
Hi keep up the good work thanks for the ear training
I always mistake the augmented chords for some reason. They literally sound nothing like the rest idk why I'm making the mistake.
Thank you, great work!
THANK YOUUUUU
this is good. thanks
Yes, I wanna be your friend! Good videos!! Thanks!!
Nice sounds
Thank you Bianca!

can you please do a video for major minor dim dim7 dom7 aug and add6?
Thank you
I'm studying for my Praxis 2 and found this video very useful!

Hey I want to learn the theory of music by myself, along with your videos, do you recommend another resource?

thank u :)
So , if I do this everyday my hearing will improve ?
It's more like your listening will improve...just learning to discern the difference between different kinds of sounds, in this case chords.

Aha, THAT'S what my brain was doing!!!
Yay I got 28/30
Diminished: When there is weird and demonic activity at home and you know it ain’t good.
Majors easy, Minors semi easy.....its just augmented and diminished I get confused
my ear didn't responding.

This might be the one where I misspoke. Check what the video says - it also might be an inversion.
For some reason the wavering pitch makes it so much harder for me

Hi
getting every single one wrong

keep on going!
Why wasn't there a video! I stopped listening as soon as you began to play!
