The History of Wienerschnitzel.

- Wienerschnitzel is an American fast food chain that specializes in hot dogs and was founded in 1961 by former Taco Bell employee John Galardi as Der Wienerschnitzel (despite the fact that in German, the correct article would be das not der). Despite the name, the company does not ordinarily sell Wiener schnitzel, although it did so on one occasion as a promotion.[2] Wienerschnitzel locations are found predominantly in California and Texas; other locations are found in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Washington. Outside the United States of America, there are stores located in Guam and Panama

I worked at the original Wienerschnitzel in Wilmington in 1982 while I was a student in high school. The restaurant is still there in business to this very day.

I remember as a child back in 70s going to one on gaffey st in san pedro it was heaven
No more foot longs right?
I remember in 1967 they sold Coke in a glass Coke glass for 15 cents, rather than 10 cents in a paper cup. My friends and I went well out of our way to drive through every couple of days for the month or two they were running the promotion, getting 15 cent Cokes in the glass. I still have about 8 or 10 of those glasses all these years later.
I still have mine, too!
sell them on E-Bay $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Still love their chili dogs!
Der Weinerschnitzel was my first job in 1973 in Bell, California. Loved working there - we didn't have burgers at the time. Our orders were marked in pencil on paper bags, we added the totals together and had an old-fashioned cash register on which we pressed the keys to mark the total. I like to think I had a hand in inventing chili fries, since, when closing, I'd mix the old fries and leftover chili together and take them home. We also grilled the Polish sandwiches, which made them so much better! Whenever I'm in So Cal (I live in Oregon now), I must have my fill of Wienerschnitzel!
No DW in Oregon? 😮
There ya go! I lived in Bell as a kid - if you knew Nimitz Jr High ha. Great story! Everything was new ha.

2024: Hot dog - $15.00, bun extra, financing available.
1978: Kraut Dog - $0.25 Yum!
They're about 2 to 3 bucks a piece now.
I liked the mix and match 5 for 5.
It went up to $7.99 then they stopped the mix and match altogether
That's a clever comment.
Both of these guys were genius…Bell had several failures but he never gave up.
So popular while growing up in California
yea the rise and fall of fastfood in CA....20 an hour will bury these companies. it wont take long. will be over soon.
Those funky A frame shops are very distinctive and are great
Making the drive thru go thru the building was really an ingenious move!
I worked at the one in Buena Park, California, while in high school (1979-80). 2 teens were left alone each night to close. One night, the place was robbed and the teen girl was taken. One night when I was working, someone shot at the building and the glass door almost shattered in my face. Other than the dangers of closing, I have really good memories of working there!
Every Sunday after church my paternal grandparents took my dad and his 4 sisters to Wienerschnitzel for chili dogs. When I was around 3 or 4 years old my single father started taking me every Sunday after church. Now I'm a dad. She's only sixteen months. But once she's big enough, gonna make that 3 gens.
Graduating in 1970 in North Highlands California Der Wienerschnitzel was always the late-night munchie joint after parting all night! I moved to Santa Cruz in 1972 right next to a Der Wienerschnitzel on Soquel Blvd and at the end of the night they would give me hot dogs for the dogs and of course I would return the favor by giving the employee's a joint. Great Days thank you Der Wienerschnitzel
yeah, and I bet you the weed was a whole lot better back then than this chemical BS we have nowadays
@blinddiecast true, yet squares believe the "dope" 365 times stronger now.
Loved the DW in Alameda, CA during my high school days. First fast food on my own when I got my driver's license. 2 Kraut Dogs and a Coke for under a dollar in 1969! Later became a hero to my daughter and her friends when I took them to a DW in Santa Cruz, CA which had a drive thru. Kids were amazed when you actually DROVE THRU!!
Chili dogs on Park St, and a Tommy Tucker cone afterwards, across the street ..Alameda
The chili dog with onions is great. Although a polish with sourkrout and mustard is hard to turndown.
The Der Weinerschnitzel on Alameda Island closed some time ago.
@@jimfesta8981
The building is still there. Never been there but they added indoor seating on the right side a while ago. It sells Vietnamese food now. I think you order outside at the window.
I'm from Alameda. We moved there in 1969. Where was this located? I vaguely remember it. I feel like we might have went there.
Long live these fast food Kings. Carl's Jr., Tommy's Original, In-n-Out, Del Taco, Taco Bell, Foster's Freeze, etc.

Sad but true. I was looking for a German cuisine restaurant in the Los Angeles. Der Wienerschnitzel came in at the top of the list.
Of all cuisines, German?! Really? 😂 potatoes with potato pancakes!
@@Auqua Not German, never been to Germany, but German food is awesome.
There's a German restaurant in Silverlake - The Red Tavern. Also Wirtshaus. Not sure if it's there anymore but there was one in Venice. But there are a few other locations. Also don't forget Schreiners in Glendale. It's a butcher shop, but there's also a small deli and some smokes / cooked meats
Chili cheese dogs, mustard dogs, and corn dogs! Love them all!
Fried dogs, dog kabobs, boiled dogs, dog creole, dog fricassee, that that’s about all I know bout tha diggin business.

I've learned the hard way, you can't eat a chili cheese dog while driving. You wind up wearing it.

I've pulled it off but I agree It ain't worth it
When the Bryan, TX store opened, it was so popular that they found it difficult to keep up with the demand. It still sits at the same location, after 50 years.
Mustard Dogs were my favorite when I was a kid. As I grew older, my tastes became more sophisticated and the Polish Sandwich became my favorite.
almost a days worth of sodium in the polish sandwich, but damn they are good
I still call them a Polish dog, the original name, when I order one. Everything about it is the same since the 60s. It's my favorite too.
I loved going to Wienershnitzel on Central Ave in Montclair CA at lunchtime as a student at Montclair HS! The Class of ‘78 rules!
39 cent mustard dogs!
It’s der wienershnitzel. Bring back the ‘Der’ !!!
Go Cavaliers! Class of 88!
I worked at our local Wienerschnitzel back in 1980 and it is still open to this day. From what I'm told, this Wienerschnitzel is the only one east of the Mississippi.

We didn’t have wienershcnitzel in Denver when I was a kid in the 70s, but there was one in Lubbock TX where my grandparents lived. So it was a big deal to get chili cheese dogs when I visited them. My absolute favorite fast food joint.
You are completely wrong, zenbear! I'm only 54 years old, and I distinctly remember several Der Weinerschitzel's spread across Denver in the 70's! We used to pop in at one on West Colfax on our return trip from Heritage Square amusement park in the foothills, in which the iconic building still stands AND still operates as a DW/ Hamburger Stand. We used to go to the one by our house on 52nd & Federal often, where they ran a DW/Hamburger Stand until the iconic building was razed in 2021 to make room for a Churches Chicken. Then there's one that is CURRENTLY being operated as a Der Wienerschnitzel/Hamburger Stand on Dartmouth & Broadway that was one of the original Der Weinerschitzel's to open in Denver. I don't know what part of Denver you grew up in, but I grew up on the North Side! Sounds like yous didn't get out enough to experience a Der Weinerschitzel in Denver in the 70's, zenbear!
I see you're a typical '5-T':
Typical Texan Telling Tall Tales
None near me anymore. Kraut dog with mustard and onions. Gawd they are sooo good.
Heck yea!!! Another great meal I loved back in the days, Polish sandwich with kraut and chili !!!
"Wienerschnitzel" is not a sausage. It means, literally, Viennese cut. It was originally veal, therefore, "veal cutlet."
There is a chain of restaurants in Berlin and elsewhere called "Wienerwald" (Vienna forest). They sell fried chicken.
The Der Wienerschnitzel near me served beer. It was perfection!
The der wienerschnitzel I went to as a kid had this sort of ‘white powder’ on their hotdog buns. This was in the 60s and early 70s
Many newer junk food style restaurants are serving beer these days which is nice.
It's true that you'd kind of expect a restaurant called Der Wienerschnitzel to serve beer.
One of my first jobs in 1996 was working at the El Cajon (San Diego) location that was on the corner on Park street ( which is now a police station). I’ve worked with the company about 5 times when I needed a job since I know the owner and manager. They are still working at Wienerschnitzel but now in the Spring Valley location in San Diego. Our A frame store in El Cajon was always busy in the days. I still remember the all you can eat $2 promo , the mini corn dogs making a scene and Frito pies was selling a lot. It was a fun experience to get into food industry. Glad to see them still in business
There was an A-frame store near the corner of 70th street and University avenue, at the boundary between La Mesa and San Diego. It was in business from sometime in the 1960s to the end of the 1970s (or beginning of the 1980s). It was very popular during its time. The building was eventually repurposed, but it might still be there.
As a kid in the 1960s and 1970's, I loved going to our nearest Wienerschnitzel with my family. It was near the Richland Hills Mall in the mid-cities between Fort Worth and Dallas. Also there at the mall were other family favorites, Montgomery Ward and Cinema theater. Adults' admission for movies was 35¢ and childrens' was 25¢. I am very happy to know that Wienerschnitzel remains in business, today. Now, I feel hungry and want to go find a store and get myself a loaded Wienerschnitzel hot dog or two and sides. Stomach is growling for it. Good times!
Grew up in the area, also went as a kid. Went with my parents and some friends to Shakey’s pizza near by but I was a picky eater then and had to have a hot dog so they got me one there. What memories. 🤣🤣🤣👍🏻🌭
@@pauldonner9707Awesome! Those were great times to remember. All the best!
So good! There was one right around the corner from our house in Huntington Beach, my grandmother loved walking there in the afternoon. My Dad used to take me here when I was a kid.
Canoga Park, CA.
Old A frame style building, it is still there.
Grew up with that one myself. Still go by there every so often.
Is it still in business? My girl friend worked there in the '70's. She was so disgusted with what they were serving she used to cross the street to the opposite corner to McDonald's and eat there for her lunch break. Apparently when the hot dogs got old and a bit moldy she would throw them away but the manager at the time would pull them out of the trash and insisted she just clean them off, cook and serve them. Her manager was also always mad at her because she would still wear her Wienerschnitzel uniform when she got her lunch at McDonalds.
Been there many times!
My favorite was the one on Ventura blvd. Sherman Oakes California .
Everybody loved their chili cheese dogs but for me two double chili cheeseburgers and fries was my go to.
That’s no way to roll
I love the chili cheeseburger
2 kraut dogs with mustard, please.
we used to go to Wienerschnitzel all the time in the 70s/80s. Their prices now make it not worth patronizing them any longer. Too bad, really liked their menu.
My Dad and I would stop at the one on Dyer Ave near the Rodeway Inn in El Paso,Texas. Gone are the days.
Been to that location many times when I lived there. 👍🏻
In High School in Phoenix AZ I loved to go to Der Wienerschnitzel, that was in the late 60's.

Great video! In the 70s-80s, my family used to frequent the DW on Colima Rd & Fullerton Rd, in Rowland Heights. It's long gone now. Maybe 12-13 years ago, during a work shift in Paramount, I stopped at the DW on Rosecrans & Anderson... I mentioned it to my mom, and she told me that she and her friends used to eat there after school. Class of '65... great memories!
I love Wienerschnitzel. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s enjoying delicious hot dog choices. Yum!
First time I saw a Wienerschnitzel was in 1987. I was visiting my Mom in Sacramento and I noticed the weird A frame setup as I drove by. They I noticed they sold hot dogs....and I had to try em. Chili Cheese Dog was my go to. Funny thing, they are all over the Dallas area now, and I've only been to their local place once in 27 years living in the area.
Now, I'll head to Portillo's if I want a really good hot dog. Cool video!
They had a location in Tulsa Oklahoma in the late 60s and 70s...great memories as a kid back then. Now, there is none in Oklahoma.
Everyone raving about the Chill Cheese Dog. But you're a real fan if ya love the Polish Sandwich.
Lets not forget those delicious corn dogs

Growing up in Long Beach near a store on Pacific Coast Highway, me and my buddies would always stop in to load up on chili dogs after surfing. This was the early 60's when you could get four dogs for $.60. I wish I could eat some right now.
I just realized that I haven't eaten Wienerschnitzel food since the early 80!
Really a shame how they've dwindled in Northern California! This was a treat we had every so often when my family had our couple of times a month "fast food Friday" dinners! I once had a "mustard dog" - probably one of the simplest things on the menu - but I swear it was the best! Something always appeals to me much more when you get hotdogs out as opposed to making them yourself! Haha!
Der Wiener stand is still open on A St in Hayward CA. I used to eat there when they first came to town back in the 1960's. I remember filling on the "chili dog" for less than 20 cents each.
Same in Texas, they used to be several of them , now they are only a few left. Love those chilli cheese dogs , used to buy them a dozen at a time .
Did they taste so good because we were young and hungry or were they just good? In the 1960's, McDonald's was not the THING in those days; if I remember correctly. Jack in the Box was just starting.
@@user-wc3ue4jg4w nah, it tastes good.
As a kid I loved the Patty Melt they made. Same rye bread as the Polish sandwich but it was toasted and was simply a hamburger patty with American cheese. Had no onions. It went away about the time I was ten or so. Then for some reason they brought it back when I was in my twenties and I lived off them for about a year while it lasted.
Yes it was Der Wienerschnitzel when I was a kid. I learned in german class that a "Wienerschnitzel" is German is actually a veal cutlet, not a hot dog.
Used to visit one in my neighborhood in San Diego CA in the 90s; it's now a coffee shop (same distinctive building)
We still have one here in Gilroy California. Chile cheese dog yum yum
I worked for Der Wienerschnitzel in 1969. At that time their claim to fame was "all pork' hotdogs.
I used to frequent the one we had at one corner of campus at UT El Paso in the 70’s. I still have my red plastic soda cup from there. Faded, but I still use it.

I loved the pickel they put on the hotdog,,
Grew up in the 70’s and 80’s eating at the Lakewood A frame one.
I remember that place. Loved it
I remember the jingle "Come to Der Wienerschnitzel.............we're the happiest hotdog around........."
I definitely miss this nostalgia...
I would go to the one they had in Pasadena, CA, back in the 70's when I was a kid, but if I could put up McDonald's French Fries against Der Wienerschnitzel's French Fries, I would vote for Der Wienerschnitzel, by far hands down ✋🏿.
The last time I came across one, was in Hayward, CA, in 2000 😢.
I wish that Der Wienerschnitzel was here in Hawaii, I'd be there every single day, lol.
We still have one here in Reno, always seems busy which is good, a nearby one closed after trying different menu mergers. We had an A&W, it closed as the land was being redeveloped, but there's still one in the next city over. Funny how these small chains can just stay alive.
Full on memories of my so cal childhood. Including that ten second song by the descendants.
If you live in So Cal, the old Wienerschnitzel buildings are now delicious taco shops.
Fresno and San Jose too
There is a repurposed DW down the street from me. The parking has been rearranged, so it no longer works as a drive in. I used to get 10 chili dogs for $5. I could actually finish that many.
When I worked at a car wash in Reseda, CA in 1975, my lunch break every day was at the original A-frame Der Weinerschnitzel next door. The price of their chili dogs matched my paltry paycheck, and they were good, too -- I'd sure like to have those cans of chili sauce shown in this video. I wonder if that stand survived the Northridge earthquake in the '90s. Last I heard of the Schnitz, they were sponsoring dachshund races at horse race tracks.
I miss this restaurant!!! None of them on the east coast I can find. A few in LA area 10 years ago or so.
It's funny to hear about the kids and car culture, the cause of the drive through. In Phoenix, Az, cruising Central had been around for many years before Der Wienerschnitzel ... and their first store of course, was right on the corner on Central Ave ... in the middle of the cruising activity. So cruisers were there before Der Wienerschnitzel ... not because of it.
That "Worlds most wanted wiener" commercial is hilarious!
I don’t get it

The story goes that the chili used at Der Wienerschizel is the Taco Bell mild sauce.
Before Glen Bell started selling tacos, he had a burger stand and served chili dogs.
Well, the sauce he was using for the hot dogs became the Taco Bell mild sauce.
So when Der Wienerschizel started, the sauce was again used for hot dogs.
