    On March 28, 2022 at 0144 hours Newark F.D. was dispatched to 650 E. Crest Drive to provide assistance to Heath F.D. for a report of an apartment fire. Several other agencies were dispatched to this run to provide automatic aid.
    Unfortunately, I realized that I had failed to start recording after I had arrived on scene and given my initial size-up. I started the recording immediately after the size-up.
    Heath Engine-52 (crew of 2) arrived on scene right behind me. The lieutenant on Engine-52 pulled a 1.75” attack line and did a fantastic job of knocking-down the bulk of the fire that was exterior, on the Bravo/Charlie corner, and extending into the attic.
    Responding Equipment-
    Heath Engine-52 with a crew of 2
    Heath Rescue-51 with a crew of 3
    Newark Rescue-1 with a crew of 3
    Newark Ladder-3 with a crew of 3
    Newark Medic-3 with a crew of 2
    The working fire brought
    Granville Engine-201 with a paid crew of 4
    Granville Rescue-201 with a paid crew of 4
    Refugee Canyon Engine-351 with a crew of 3
    Refugee Canyon Medic-351 with a crew of 2
    The fire was quickly contained using two 1.75” attack lines.

    Chief, I'm ALWAYS impressed with how fast your crew get water on the fire. Even as in this case, when a search is involved.
    IDK how all department protocols are established, but I see so many videos where crews wait for supply lines to be established before they start their attack, they never deploy a drop from their boosters. I'll never understand that. Sometimes, those few seconds can make the difference between a flashover or smoke-damage to a structure. God it's good to see a department with such a great attack time!! So well done!!

    No need to apologize for forgetting to hit record, Chief. In fact, by not doing so, you unintentionally left more time to capture what really matters: Footage of everybody working together on the fire ground to address the incident in the best and quickest manner. There's plenty of response videos on RUclips, but I watch your channel because I always find a teaching moment to share with my own crew. I realize you're a busy man but the already outstanding educational value of your videos would increase exponentially if you wore a helmet cam so everyone could see your POV and understand exactly what you saw during your 360; it would provide context to the incident and help explain why and where you decided to deploy assets. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

    We started using extra lights over 20 years ago, and they were either dim and short-lived (it can be -20F on a winter call, and batteries crapped out in fifteen minutes) or needed a generator and extension cord. We wasted a lot of mental energy trying to make them work, and we failed continuously. Lithium-powered LEDs are a game changer.

    Chief Decker, your heroes once again have done their assignments very well. Luckily, this is one of the few times that no one stood in front of your command vehicle to block the camera's view of the Alpha Delta corner of the structure! Here in Danville, Virginia I am friends of the city's paid department, and I usually get more access due to how I conduct myself in covering scenes for my TV station. All of my videos are "G Rated" because children do not need to see the bad stuff, but they do love to see the fire trucks! I have never heard you mention anything pertaining to Rehab for the firefighters, do you do this at fire scenes? Also are your firefighters that are involved with an interior attacks, are they required to have their med conditions checked by rescue personnel at the scene? Thank you sir for your service, Charles.

    Love these videos… question, in nearly all (if not all) of your videos you request “power company and an investigator.” I’m curious, why wouldn’t this be automatically dispatched at/receipt/confirmation of a working structure fire by the dispatcher?

    • @commandvisionfire
      @commandvisionfire  2 года назад +5

      That is a very good question. There are some times when we are dispatched and the fire turns out to be quite small. In those situations we can shut off a breaker to isolate the electrical system in the area of the fire, so we would not necessarily need the electric company. Also we have investigators on each shift that can investigate small fires at the company level. That avoids calling in an investigator on overtime needlessly. Obviously in the videos that I post the fire is well involved needing the power company to pull the meter and a full fire investigation.

    Although I understand why you wouldn't want to risk pulling a meter (arc flash, etc), is there a reason to not have a hot stick on the trucks to pull the cutout door fuse on the pole? Is it a training thing, a safety thing, or an AEP bureaucratic thing? Your call for the investigator is perfect. The sooner they get there the better. Waiting till after the fire is extinguished is of no value or I should say less value. Unless it was a clear cut determination such as the occupant saying I left a pot of food on the stove, on a significant incident that had any chance of litigation I always called for investigator asap, because that’s their job. On my reports I would note undetermined as the cause. I would further note that it is under investigation and put the investigators ID number and name.
    If the property is insured, this is another way that the insurance companies are saving money.
    If you get a chance search the TV show Forensic Files. There is an episode featuring investigator Mike Lane, dealing with a fire in Augusta Georgia. It was to cover up for a murder. That was an incident that I responded to. One of my officers found the body. Mike Lane, has credentials running from the East Coast to the West Coast. He is still known as one of the very best investigators in the southeast if not the very best. Fortunately my family has dinner with his family very often. This guy is nothing but a computer full of knowledge.

    What would be the procedure if your units searched a building and found someone refusing to leave and combative?
    I’ve seen many many videos of this nature and always wondered how that is supposed to be handled.

    Chief David, what are some reasons that someone would not leave their home while it is on fire? I know that no one was found in this home but there have been other videos I have seen where people refuse to leave. Thanks for the info.

      Years ago during a search, we pulled an 80 year old woman from her bedroom through the window and handed her off to other firefighters. She was upset that we didn't let her get dressed. She was not about to get caught outside in her nightgown! That was what was important to her at the time. Not burning up in a house fire! People would try to save kids, pets and drugs!

    Please shed some light on arriving on scene and THEN putting on your hood and mask. When I was a firefighter, we donned everything in the truck enroute. Left the regulator off to breath normally. We were ready when arriving not standing at the front door. Am I missing something? Otherwise, these videos are great and show a lot of people what firefighters face every day to keep them safe.

    Chief, do you all routinely announce accountability level over the assigned channel? How about RIT teams? “Fully involved attic” was a bit premature after initial attack would you agree?

    • @commandvisionfire
      @commandvisionfire  2 года назад +1

      I have trouble remembering to announce the accountability. In our area it is always at the primary pumping engine. Typically the on-deck company is the RIT. In regards to the attic, I wish I had started my helmet cam so you could see the volume of fire on the rear. Also watch the ridge vent. At 2:17 fire had extended from Bravo end to just shy of Charlie end.

    One thing about Chief Decker is, he doesn't show up to screw around. He gets the job done and the fact there are 234 users who had to be blocked because they're too stupid to have a civil discussion is concerning, especially given the fact Chief Decker is willing to talk to anyone but only in a respectful manner. Is there something funny about house fires? Am I missing something? The fact some poor family is losing everything in front of our eyes and Decker and the great crew of Newark Fire are putting their lives on the line and working hard to save what they can should be enough to keep it respectful.

      @commandvisionfire  2 года назад +1

      The unit that is on deck is the RIT. They will bump and take the next assignment and the next company will bump up and take RIT. As far as equipment, it would depend on the building.
