In the meantime I'll be looking to buy a farm east of Waimea. Will start an orchard -slowly because I'll only be able to tend to it about 4 times per year until we move there full time. Hi you guys, everything looks so good and flourishing so well, are you able to get fruit all year round or do they have a dormant period, since you don't have a winter season and if so is that hard on the trees not getting a rest period from producing, thank you guys for the update, greatly appreciated

    • @OffGridHawaii
      @OffGridHawaii  5 лет назад

      Majority of the fruit trees have a fruiting season, very variable depending on the species. The fruits that will produce year round for us are papayas and bananas at the moment. Our starfruit is fall/early winter and lilikoi fruits in spring and fall (and still producing) so it takes a little break in between seasons. Coconuts will also produce year round but we don't have any grown ones yet :) hope that helps.

    That's funny about the papaya. When I was in St Croix, we explored around an abandoned property that had a half built concrete house at the top of a hill, and there was a completely untended papaya tree next to it that was just loaded with fruit. Seemed to do really well there. Maybe the good drainage and cleared lot with lots of sun was the difference.

    The Kuini variety of Mango is supposed to be a wet weather mango. I picked one up at the BIAN plant sale in Hilo last year and am giving it a try in Hawaiian Acres. I also bought some seedlings from Bill Merril (greengardenguy1) on RUclips that are supposed to be Indonesian wet mangos but I have yet to get them on the ground. Bill has a nursery on South Kopua road that you drive past if you go to Musa Marvin's banana plantation. Bill has a selection of plants I've seen nowhere else.
    As to your figs not getting sweet, that is due to the temperature, the hotter it is during ripening the sweeter they will be - to a limit.

    It’s unfortunate that the ‘Ma’afala’ is promoted as the best breadfruit free to grow, because although the compact formation is ideal for the species, the fruit are small and not as tender when compared to say ‘ulu fiti’. Good call on picking up the ‘emperor’ lychee which produces beautiful fruit. It only fruits bi-annually unfortunately. Do you have a fence around your border?

    Here is a suggestion for a video topic, rain. I see that there are places where it can rain up to or greater than 200 inches per year in the big island especially in the wet tropic climate zones like where you are. Can you talk about how much and how long it rains each day? Seasonal variations? Pro and cons? I know that you cannot tell us how it is everywhere on the Big Island concerning rain but I am interested to hear a snapshot of how you have experienced it. I know that you collect rain water, so do you filter rain water to drink or use other water for drinking water?

      The more the better but 2-3 wheel barrows should be good to start. Cover the soil with 1-2 wheel barrows of mulch, no more then 4 in thick.

    I see you have Ulu (breadfruit) and jackfruit growing on your property. Do you know if the closely related breadnut grows on the Big Island too?

      do they have seeds?
      I wanted to know this because ebay sellers claim that they sell the seeds of this variety.
      In Poland, bananas are just a hobby, not this climate. And that's why it's hard to get seedlings. Bringing a risk is that it will rot along the way. To bring the ears to be phytosanitary certificates.

    Is it ok if you did your videos in segments. For example part 1 part 2 part 3 par 4 etc and show the rest of the trees please
    and the rest of the property please.

      We'll have part 2 of the tour coming up next. If we showed ALL the trees on video it would take like 20 parts lol.
