      As someone from Scotland who is now 57. I was totally hooked on the 2nd world war, as a kid, teenager and for most of my adult life. Read hundreds of books on the subject. This is the holy grail of any book you need to read on the rise of Nazi Germany. Shirer was there and witnessed it until kicked out of Germany. Shirer does not only explain how the situation arrived to get Hitler into power, but his narration is so good you feel that you where, there with him.

    I’ve listened to this audiobook a dozen times now. It’s just amazing that the author was one of two correspondents that got the scoop on where/when France would sign the surrender. His description of the events transports my imagination right there. I can see the look on Hitler’s face. I can feel his ‘defiance’. I sense the humiliation of the French generals and the triumph of the Germans.

      The government would be less likely to send police and troops after communist but if they did end up Infront of a judge they'd get the book thrown at them.

    I remember this book from when I was a kid in the 1960s, because it was the thickest book my parents had in the bookcase.
    Many years later, I actually read the whole thing. It's pretty much the standard work on the history of the 3rd Reich, written by a highly capable writer who was actually there for most of it.
    Shirer had actually met some of the high Nazis like Ribbentrop and Rosenberg.
    Not many historians have had that close a look at these people and lived to tell the comprehensive tale.

    • @cuewizchris
      @cuewizchris 19 дней назад +1

      That's true, but even he didn't get all the details 100% right. Most of today's historians - and all the German historians I've read, too - don't agree with Shirer's theory that the Nazis planned the Reichstag fire, for example. The current consensus is that Van der Lubbe acted alone.
      Nevertheless, this is still an immensely valuable historical account and it's fascinating to listen to this great man's perspective. I only wish the narrator knew how to pronounce German words correctly.

    • @maartenvandam344
      @maartenvandam344 19 дней назад

      @cuewizchris I never bought the theory where van der Lubbe was a lone wolf, and I still don't. He had what today we would call 'learning difficulties'.
      The Reichstag was a huge building, and all he had on him was some matches.
      There are some real questions that have never been answered.
      How did he get in there? How did he get the fire started that quickly? The whole building was burning when they caught him, without an accelerant. A lone man with learning difficulties decides to conveniently set fire to the seat of parliament a month after a new government is installed, creating an excuse to declare martial law and suspend parliament indefinitely? With 1 box of matches?
      I'm not buying it. Someone let him in there, and he must have had help.
      From whom remains the question. A communist plot wasn't proven at the time and hasn't been found afterwards.
      I can't prove it, but I think the Nazis did it, and those that helped van der Lubbe didn't survive the Night of the Long Knives in 1934.

    • @cuewizchris
      @cuewizchris 19 дней назад +1

      @@maartenvandam344 Due to a phenomenon called backdraft, it's possible to cause a fire that develops very quickly. Breaking into a building and setting stuff on fire doesn't require much of an intellect..
      You're right in that it's hard to imagine that the Nazis didn't plan it because it was so incredibly convenient for their plans.
      I'm not an expert on arson, but being German I have read tons of German language sources. We may never be able to give a definitive answer, but I think Shirer making the positive point that the Nazis did indeed plan it without having irrefutable evidence is questionable.
      It doesn't matter what seems the most logical explanation. Proof is what matters.

    This book is highly informative and educational. However, the writing does come off sometimes as an Arrogant American, peppered with petty judgements and cheap shots at its people involved. What the West always fails to realize is that, to many other countries, Democracy is not the be all-end all savior of the people. Freedom is never free. There is always a cost. So, it’s always beneficial to keep a balanced viewpoint, without defending one side or the other.

I had this book when I was in the Navy but tore the cover off because it had a swastika on the cover. I deplore the Nazis but did not want it to become an issue if someone saw the cover. I have found that sometimes if you read history about the Nazi Germany people think that you admire it but that is not the case. In fact I see many parallels with what is happening today in America. The rank and file MAGA crowd in this country need to study what happened to the SA (The brown shirts). Once a dictator gets control he no longer needs the people who helped get him there and they are eventually betrayed and at best discarded. The rich and powerful think they can "control" the dictator but it does not happen.

    I don´t know man, when people defend impressionist paintings as beautiful i become hesitant... it is just weird shit put into a painting, according to me. Don´t get me wrong, all art should have a place, but one mans meat is another mans poison. Just because this author didn´t like the "new" german art(NSDAP approved), does not mean it was bad or good... only that it was ugly according to him.
    His homophobic standing is weird, considering he is judgeing the Nazis as repulsive and degenarate in his whole book, because of homosexual relations... Did he really think there were none English, Jewish, American etc homosexuals fighting the Nazis with their lives at stake and with great seal? Nor among his beloved painters, playwrights or other artists whom the German state threw out, killed or jailed ?
    Talk about living in a bubble. Probably a christian with a healthy hate towards everything that their holy book loves to hate(remind me again what the old testament teaches about homosexualls?)
    The fact is that the Nazis had a campaing of terror against the gay community, wich he totaly ignores, probably because he thought they did the world a good thing in that case...
    "Although an eye-witness news reporter in Germany from 1926-41, Shirer’s book makes no mention of the Nazi anti-gay terror. Headline-making attacks, such as the ransacking of the headquarters of the German homosexual rights movement by fascist students and storm troopers on 6 May 1933, do not merit even a footnote. Shirer does, of course, cite the notorious Nazi book-burning in Berlin four days later but fails to acknowledge that many of the 20,000 torched volumes were from the trashed headquarters of the gay movement, the Institute for Sexual Science."
