Portugal is truly one of the gems of Europe. Me and my girlfriend go at least once a year. Awesome places to see, rich history, SURFING, loads of interesting native grapes meaning interesting wines, food, the great people, and for us northern europeans great weather. @@Miguel-nm4tn Yup I am. Well, I can actually agree on that since I have lot of relatives and friends in Istanbul and therefore I saw a lot of similarities. But my parents saw even more similarities. For them Lisbon is the old fairytale Istanbul because they grew up and lived in Istanbul from the 50's-80's until they moved to Stockholm, Sweden where we are actually still living in. I say old fairytale Istanbul because for like 30 years now Istanbul has been one of the fastest growing cities in the world which many European cities haven't so my parents and grandparents who left Istanbul 1975 and during the 80's they feel more like tourists in the city they once grew up in today. I can go as far as to say that my parents and grandparents are more tourist in Istanbul than me even though I was born in Stockholm. I was born in 1998 and we still love Istanbul but here we have generational shift. Me and my siblings have only seen the Istanbul that has been growing constantly and rapidly for like 30 years so when I saw how my parents homesickness suddenly disappeared in Lisbon on a way that I've never witnessed during every visit to Turkey especially Istanbul. Then I understood what they have been talking about for years about the old Istanbul that I never had the chance to see. So yes these 2 cities are in our eyes siblings but my parents really felt that more home feeling in Lisbon because yes, it was like a time travel for them to their younger in their Istanbul they grew up in.

I just got back from my sister's wedding in Portugal. We flew into Lisbon and stayed in the main square the first night which was great just to see the classics of Lisbon right as we arrived. Then we took a bus to Sintra where we stayed most of the time and where the couple actually got married. And finally we ended our trip back in Lisbon and did all of the typical tours, which was actually pretty great since we had a large group and many older folks so planning and comfort were necessary. The country was stunning, even in the rain and fog and the people as a whole were very kind and engaging. I see why you lived there, I can't say I'm not thinking of moving.

The people were very friendly and helpful and their country is beautiful and I always felt safe, which was important as most of the time I slept in the Ford Transit van I rented, parked in carparks at the beaches. A lot of contrasts like when you are driving through villages, some are very old where you can lean out the car and touch the homes and then you get those that are very new that have wide streets and big front yards like we have in Australia. If I had to live overseas Portugal would be at the top of a short list for me!

It is actually called that way because that's the name of the network that runs most ATMs here. Banks don't really have their own proprietary ATMs, so they created a joint company that's in charge of running the network, to ensure that you have access to the same services no matter which ATM you use. It was actually a pretty innovative service when it originally came out.

Nice dog. But the best dog in the world is "rafeiro alentejano". It almost go extinct a few years ago, i think a lot of portuguese don't even know about it, But i had one, and it blew my mind. Best dog ever. I can't even compare with any other dog. Calm, friendly, very very quiet. Most of the time you forget he's around. But when you need him... Everyone notice him! It can look more fearsome than the meanest dog, and more powerfull than the strongest dog. No wonder they out them in the " danger dogs" list, even if they don't bite no one. I eard (don't know if it's true, But i can believe it) that no one ever record that they bite someone. Very peacefull dog, But can look like a mad dog.

The Airbnb apartments near Bairro Alto Alfama are very small so much so that cooking anything is a massive chore. Very affordable for eating out. The frangescia national has the best roast chicken. At the bakeries ask for the carcasas fantastic breakfast breads. I shopped at jumbo 9pm. The one way journey on the bus is about 1.45 euro. Public toilets you pay and very few of them in Lisbon.

Jose Coelho my favorite public toilet (just a urinal so, I have actually used it as a woman, kkkk) is the the screened one by the Castelo. I laugh everytime I see tourists taking pictures of it...which I too did when we first moved there.
