Such a beautiful part of the country! I keep trying to convince my husband to move us out there, but he always comments on the brutal winters and wildfire risk. We made it as far as Ross Creek Cedars eleven years ago, would love to travel across country and explore more of the northwest! Thanks for the glimpses of beauty and hope you can stay on your feet next hike! Oh, and keep warm, good thing you had Lolly to snuggle with!
It's hard to beat that's for sure. The winters can vary in severity and unfortunately the wildfires are a pretty normal occurrence anymore. The Ross Creek Cedars were super close to where I was at in this video - maybe a mile or two as the crow flies :) I did a video on that a couple years back and it was a beautiful spot! Hoping to keep my feet below my head on the next one as well! Thanks so much for watching and for the support!
Glad you’re ok!! I’m also a long distance hiker and have that same tent. You can keep the ground sheet attached to the tent base and it all fits together very nice into the stuff sack. Makes setting up a little faster. Cheers and happy trails!!
Man, I have never thought about doing that.. but it's genius - thank you for the suggestion! I'll be repacking it before our next outing. Thanks for watching!
Dude close call!!! That is literally my biggest fear backpacking that it pours rain and all my stuff gets soaked. That is also why I always pack my bag with the tent on the top always in case I need to make quick shelter. Also nylofume bags are insanely awesome at keeping everything down dry. It’s a must.
Exactly! A good point with keeping your tent on the top just in case. I'll typically do food to be the first thing to access, but after this experience I'm liking your suggestion and will start doing this - thanks! I'll look into those bags too. I was thinking of repacking my sleeping bag into some kind of large dyneema stuff sack to for surely keep dry. Thanks for watching man!
Looks like a Spyderco Endura you're packing. Great knife, light and super useful. I know a lot of light weight backpackers won't bring a knife, but I can't imagine going into the woods without a good, sharp, decent size knife. In fact I usually keep a folder in my pocket and a sheath knife in my pack, especially if I'll be making a camp fire.
Hey good eye! That's exactly the knife and it is one of the best I've owned. It was actually a viewer/fan of the channel who sent it last year and it quickly became part of my kit. I've been debating on starting to carry some kind of small multitool like a Leatherman with me as well. A larger sheath knife is a great idea as well. Thanks for watching Dirk.. Hope you're well!
Hypothermia is scary stuff. It can sneak up on you and you not even realize it. In a recent trip with Jesse and Gus up to a local lake we camped on snow. I woke up after midnight to Gus siting up and staring at me shivering like nobody business. turned out his sleeping pad deflated and he ended up sleeping right on the snow. Took me over an hour snuggling him under my quilt to get him to stop shivering. ( Video coming soon) This looks like a great place! Great vid as always. Sorry but I did chuckle when you fell, you were fairly graceful though. It was reminiscent of you trying to roll your ankle that last day in the Enchantments!
Yeah it wasn't the most fun experience. As soon as I stopped moving it was all downhill from there. Looking forward to that video! Glad to hear it all went well and you were able to warm him up! I wanted to do so much more on this trip, but the weather got in the way of that so I'm hoping to go pack at some point. It was an awesome place and you should head this way and check it out sometime. Oh man.. The amount of times I have nearly rolled an ankle is so much that I've lost count. It'll likely happen someday. Thanks for watching, Len!
Hey thanks Lynnette! Glad to be back as well. I decided to stack up some content for the year so I can post a little more routinely instead of here and there 😊 It was an awesome spot! Nice to hear from you and I hope you've been able to get some good trail time this year as well. Thanks for the support!
For sure! You'll have to check it out sometime. It was a tough day hike last year - I think we logged about 14 miles to get it done but I added more miles than needed. Thanks for watching!
Whoa!!! You did NOT look well in that opening scene!!! We saw the title and we are both very grateful you are okay!!! We were stunned at the morning temp, especially at the end of freaking August!!! Fourteen degrees in the other direction and that is snow. 😊 Hehehehe, Lolly rocks!!! So pumped, she skipped breakfast!!! I just ordered some Magic Mind. I will give it a try. Thanks for the discount code. My Mom is very interested in trying some as well, we just need to run it by her doc. 😉 OMG, that trail is so beautiful, even in the rain! Was that a huckleberry you snacked on at the beginning of the trail? The 5:23 shot was pretty awesome!!! You both were buried in that green valley with the mountain to left!!! Wow, that was a great shot! The 5:28 shot was a great perspective shot. Man, that looks so awesome! We cannot believe you took the time to do walk by shots in all that rain!!! All of them were gorgeous!!! You two looked pretty beat when you arrived at the campsite!!! Thank God, you found that Fred Flintstone hut. Holy crap, at first, we thought it was man made because how would it form naturally, but after watching the video more, we realized, no way it could be man-made, that had to be natural!! Talk about an oasis. Too bad Willma couldn’t have whipped you up a nice brontosaurus burger! I realize at this moment, you probably have no idea who the Flintstones are!!!! Holy crap, that pan upward to see the treetops was pretty cool. We do not have trees that tall in my neck of the woods. Question, what would you have done if you were on the trail and there was lightning? There may be an obvious answer to this, but I have no clue. I just watched a video where 4 guys took shelter under a tree, the tree got hit by lightning, and all 4 fell to the ground like twigs. Would you lie flat on the ground until it passes? What a difference 45 minutes could make!!! Yikes!!! Sunny beautiful day!!! Man, that is a beautiful lake for sure. I checked the distance from that lake to a property we looked at. It was only 25 miles as the crow flies, but Google maps could not give me direction to get there from the home. Which means it is probably a 3-hour car ride and a 2-hour hike. 😊 Just JAW DROPPING drone footage as always!!! It is like beauty punching you violently in the face, in a good way!!! 😊 The sunshining on the trees, the gray from the rocks, the different shades of green, the sea of pines, the Cobalt blue lake!!! OMG, heaven on earth!!! Hehehehe, at the 15:18 mark, my Mom says wait, go back. Lolly just fell over. We went back and cracked up!!! It looked like Lolly did a running summersault!!! 😊 She looked like she was having a blast!!! Okay, another question, how far from camp do you store your food? What is a safe distance? BTW: the place you stored your food at, looked like the middle of nowhere! Do you bring a physical book or an ebook? Just curious. And what book did you bring? I am working on building a media library that contains, music, movies, tv shows, audio books, ebooks, podcasts, etc. I am focused on digital, so I can easily store it and make it portable, if necessary, especially in a grid down situation. I would be interested in hearing how you relax and unwind off grid. PHENOMINAL drone shots of the lake in the AM, with the sea of pines, the sun to the left and the mountain off to the right with the reflection in the lake, followed by the sun hitting the ridges and the sun rising in the backdrop over the far away ridge!!! OMG, this is the money shot!!! Agreed, the mini 4 pro has an AWESOME camera! The start of the trek home was pretty epic. It reminded me of the forest scenes in the Return of the Jedi! The trees were so tall, and the brush was so dense, you could hide in plain sight. Love the music score!!! OMG, we LOVE huckleberries!!! They are the greatest berries God created!!!!!! Every year, for New Year’s Day, we eat a huckleberry pie from Northwest Wild Foods! Now the plan was to get them local, but it has taken us longer to get out there than we hoped!!! That having been said, we LOVE huckleberries!!! Nice haul my friend!!! Tessa will be happy for sure, unless you ate them on the ride home!!! 😊 Oh, BTW: My Mom was concerned about bears looking for huckleberries too. Did you see any wildlife out there? Another question, how many did you eat while picking? Did that add to the slowness? Hehehehehehehehe 😊 How in God’s name did you fit all that back in your pack? Was there a stack of gear off to the right? Hehehehehe! What a difference in weather and scenery on the way back to the trailhead. So green and beautiful!!! Love the footage from the previous hike! My friend, you handled that river crossing like a boss!!! It is not how many times you get knocked down, it is all about getting up. 😊 the first spill looked a little painful. Hope you were okay. My Mom and I both LOL on your second spill. We were happy you were okay, but your comment cracked us up… OMG… We watched that part a few times. Hehehehehehehe! Did you have a dry set of clothes in your car? Oh, we hope you go back there and spend more time!!! So beautiful!!! We are so glad you have had some time to edit your content. We cannot wait to see what else you have on deck!!! Stay safe and be well my friend!
I was chilled to the bone! Ultimately I made a mistake by not putting my poncho on, and I paid for it. I won't do that one again - it made for a good learning experience! That was my thought exactly with the temps - I was worried about snow for sure. Haha. I wish I could hike like her on minimal to no food! She's a champ! Oh man you guys.. thank you so much for getting some Magic Mind! 1.) I'm beyond excited to have a channel sponsorship that will help support the channel etc.. 2.) I 100% love the stuff and I can't wait to hear what you guys think of it. Let me know!! PS You'll be hearing a lot about Magic Mind for quite some time 😊 thanks again! Aha I knew you'd comment on the 'thing' I ate off the bush. Love it. That was a thimbleberry! It's kinda like a mini raspberry if you've never tried one. They're right up there with hucks in my opinion. I snacked on those on the way up and down the trail. Glad you liked the shots! The green mixed with the rain was really scenic! I grew up on some Flintstones! That boulder hut rock house thing was a lucky find. It's funny how many massive boulders like that seem to be at alpine lakes. Every time I see one I think of making a makeshift shelter out of one 'Alone' style. It was huge though, and is hard to believe that it's natural. I have no idea how that top piece sat so perfectly like it did! A warm burger would have been amazing! Maybe Fred lifted it up there years ago.. Whoofta.. the lightning question is tricky. I've always been under the impression of practically curling up in a more open space and to avoid taking shelter under trees. I've never been in a situation like that, or have really thought about it if I'm being honest. I'm going to do some more research on best practices while hiking in a thunder/lightning storm. 25 miles isn't too bad at all I bet! If you're ever in the area you should check out Lower Spar Lake (just called Spar Lake) as it's beautiful and has a nice campground there as well. Glad you loved the drone footage! Again, the Mini 4 Pro was doing some work!! Love the image quality of the cam. I'm hoping to invest in a much nicer handheld cam for next year that will hopefully increase the video quality ten fold! Haha you can always count on the Lollz to make a good appearance like she did! Glad you guys found that one funny, too! In my mind, I always try to take about a five minute walk or so to hang my bear bag at the 'Bear' Minimum. So for this one, I walked down trail a ways before I hung it. Bringing a book on these trips is something brand spanking new I've started doing this year. I've never been much of a reader, but started doing it last winter and now I love it. I initially began reading before bed to form a habit of not looking at my phone as much, and to decrease blue light. It's like the best TV show all in your imagination. So with that.. I haven't dived too hard into eBooks or anything and hiked up an actual 700 page paperback 😂 It's a fantasy series called 'The Faithful and the Fallen' by John Gwynn. I'm currently on the last book in the series! The hike out was so much different than the hike in.. obviously! Lol but the area just looked differently with it being so sunny and warm out. It did look like the forest in the Return of the Jedi. I kept hearing noises, and swore it was the Ewoks.. Huckleberries are the best!! Don't get me started on huck pie 👌🏼👌🏼 I absolutely wish I could've stayed longer to pick the gallon that I wanted.. but that haul was pretty awesome nonetheless! I purposefully placed them in my back under the hatch in the back of my car so I wouldn't eat them! I absolutely eat my fair share while picking and it definitely adds to my slowness. Like us, bears love huckleberries too. That area is heavily populated with them, and I'm always keeping an eye out. There was some animal in camp when it got dark out that was fairly loud.. you never truly know, but in my mind I thought it was either deer or mountain goats. Haha I actually called in a caddy/sherpa to hike my extra gear up and down the trail! I have a new pack on the way and it should be shipping out any day now that is bigger and can carry more which should make packing and life much easier! Glad you liked the river crossing falls! I was just fine and getting soaked was just par for the course for that trip. Sounds like you guys enjoyed watching that just as much as Tessa did!! She couldn't stop laughing at it. I always keep a fresh set of clothes in my car... did I change into them though? Nope. I was outta there 😂😂 As always thank you guys so much for watching and for the nice comment here! I appreciate the support more than you know! Best regards, -Danny.
A few months back I stayed on the right side of 56 just after the bend going north from Noxon. It's a beautiful mountain range and would like to do Little Spar here soon when it isn't raining. I would look into Hub Hazel Lake Trail as well over by De Borgia, it's a little challenging, but the upper lakes are worth getting to.
Yeah the Cabinets and the surrounding areas make for an awesome range. I wanted to get up to Scotchman Peak #2 on this one but.. the weather. Hope you can get up there sometime! I'll look into those lake/trail suggestions - thanks! Hoping to get a couple more trips in for the year before the snow flies so I appreciate it. Cheers, and thanks for the sub.
@@DannyJSchaeferthanks!! I just started hiking this year and guys like you and these RUclips channels have really helped me gain confidence & prepare! Shout out to Howe’s the Hike? as well!
Glad to hear all turned out OK - sometimes people forget how many calories you burn just trying to stay warm - beautiful area. We just had a temp downturn here in the NC Mts. as well. Having down the slipping in the creek thing as well. Once it happens once, I just plod through the bloody creek or river or whatever. The rock hopping stops.
Aha I don't blame you there. I plodded through a creek a couple years back and ended up with the worst blisters from it. If I'm not confident in the creek crossing I'll probably just start taking the boots off. But I appreciate it! Once I stopped moving it got cold.. fast. Always appreciate your support.
No kidding? Yeah we weren't too far from each other at all if it was the same day. I backpacked this on August 28/29. Also, I hadn't heard of the Cedar Lake Loop until I saw this comment and I want to knock it out sometime. Have you been up to Scenery Mountain before?
I backpack, but I carry heavy. I don't care. I have a full poncho that covers me and my pack. It's heavy, but it comes with every time at higher elevations. If i need it one out of 20 hikes, it's worth it to me. I saw someone comment about keeping the tent on top, Im definitely going to start doing that.
Somewhere in that billowing white pack should be an extra baselayer and the means to make a hot drink. Come on, dude. That's Montana. You look great though.
Fun just wearing Frogg Togo’s, yet soaked through trouble. Poncho still in Amazon wrapper in knapsack. You’ve demonstrated a future requirement to carry extra rain protect.
I know.. To be honest I haven't dipped much into backcountry fishing but I want to do it more and more. I just need to find the setup! Thanks for watching.
Awesome man really enjoyed the trip. Yea glad we’re able to warm up. Looking forward to the next video. As always safe travels
I appreciate it man, thanks so much for watching. Next vid coming soon!

@DannyJSchaefer I'm off vacation blackout on the 16th. Just let me know a day ahead of time if you want to pound some diet.
Nice one Danny! Started off pretty shitty, but you made it happen. Always helps to stay positive and keep a level head. Beautiful area! Keep it up👍
Hey thanks Mike! Sure did. I'll take it over not getting out any day. Thanks for all your support and appreciate you watching.
So glad you were able to dry out and warm up. What a beautiful place, and I'm glad to see you back out on the trail and sharing again. 😊
Hey thanks Lynnette! Glad to be back as well. I decided to stack up some content for the year so I can post a little more routinely instead of here and there 😊 It was an awesome spot! Glad you were fine and rain stopped, also what a cute dog.
Thanks so much! We were glad the rain stopped as well - that was really something. Hope you're having a great hiking season!
So very glad the rain stopped and the sun came out. Hypothermia is no joke. Relieved you and Lolly warmed up. Stay safe!
Can't tell you how much I appreciate it! The timing of the sunshine couldn't have been any better. Thanks for watching it!
Lolly's entrance at 15:17 cracks me up!
She always has the best appearances! Thanks for watching!
Awesome hike, awesome video! Glad you’re OK man.
Thanks guys! It sure was nice when the weather cleared up. Hope you're well!
Glad it worked out. Spar Peak looks like a tough hike but something worth doing.
For sure! You'll have to check it out sometime. It was a tough day hike last year - I think we logged about 14 miles to get it done but I added more miles than needed. Thanks for watching!

Thanks NHT. I bet you get some cold weather over in your neck of the woods. Appreciate you watching and hope you're doing well!
Dang brother. The weather reminded me of most days on the Colorado Trail. Beautiful area there in western Montana.✌️
Man your trip looked pretty awesome! I'm still hoping to get down your way sometime. Hope you're doing well - thanks for watching!
Great video! What type of Patagonia hood are you rocking?
Thanks for watching! I was unable to find the exact one, but I think mine is an older version of their Diamond Quilted Bomber Hoodie.
I was doing the flower creek, Cedar lake loop the same time frame. Got snowed on (sleet/hail) at Sky lake and walked out ten miles in the wet brush. 😆
No kidding? Yeah we weren't too far from each other at all if it was the same day. I backpacked this on August 28/29. Also, I hadn't heard of the Cedar Lake Loop until I saw this comment and I want to knock it out sometime. Have you been up to Scenery Mountain before?
@@DannyJSchaefer I haven’t!
Yeah I went Cedar Lake to Dome Mountain to Sky Lake and out. 30 miles total. I’d recommend it!
@@DannyJSchaefer I’d like to explore what the extent of the Cabinet Divide Trail would be. It’s a little hard to tell with mapping.
I might try to knock it out with a summit and potential dry camp up there someday (likely next year at this point), looks like awesome views.
That would be an awesome trip. I create a Cabinet High Route last year but had to turn back after a day in. Hoping to get it done someday

What model patagonia jacket is that
Hey there. Here's a link to it on REI: alnk.to/6mQ5ney Doesn't look like they make the same one, but the new styles look awesome. Thanks for watching.
Oil life 100%. Did you do an oil change at the trail head?
Haha good eye! sure did.. dropped the oil plug in the pan and everything
Is that Cotopaxi sold as a rain jacket? I hope not.
It is not. It's more of a wind breaker with some water resistant properties.
Glad you're ok. I remember a time I dealt with hypothermia after a rain in WY. You have a good thing going here. You are enough....ditch the music....
Yeah that's the first time it's happened to me like that. Glad you were alright with your experience. Thanks so much for watching.
Come to Wildhorse Hotsprings
No fishing? Makes me sad!! 😮
I know.. To be honest I haven't dipped much into backcountry fishing but I want to do it more and more. I just need to find the setup! Thanks for watching.
I heard! If you wrap yourself in your tent, you'll stay warm 🔥
The JG method!
You didn't get hypothermia??????
Keep these locations a secret man...
Click bait 😂
Aren't you actually topo gigio?🎉😅
