The "rot" is oxidized oil. Some are really bad and have a chemical smell and taste even in things that are considered not expired or recently expired items.

I think it's cause there is really nothing to gain from it. Where as bull testicles is such a wild, crazy, disgusting, rare thing to eat there is so much entertainment value there. But old popcorn is just like...well its going to taste like popcorn that is bad. So not much crazy factor to it.

It’s the oils used to cook the snacks, oils turn rancid after awhile. And it’s so nasty.
It's why most companies switched from, "expiration dates" which are mostly useless to, "best by dates," it's just a general estimate against liability.

Sweetos are definitely one of my faves and the first time I had them was when I was pregnant (which was in 2017). So I don’t know if it’s only seasonal in some regions or what but I physically remember buying them in 2017 and again in 2018 after having my daughter.
