I remember playing 1.18 for the first time on a friend's realm and while blindly strip mining I fell about 50-100 into a massive cave structure. I was able to somehow clutch and fall into a strip of water from a nearby waterfall though and you won't BELIVE how loud I screamed.
I did tests in both 1.17 and 1.18. I dug straight down in twenty five random worlds, two runs per world. One at spawn and one in a random location. In 1.17 the chances of dying was 13%. in 1.18 it is 20%. Death by lava and fall damage are the main problems. However, it is actually rare that you will die digging straight down. A water bucket would save you most of the time from lava and having your hunger topped off will save you from most fall damage. Mobs are the third cause of death but quite rare while digging down.

Hilarious when people think it's just editing, but no. With mods this is a thing you can actually make the game do. The advantage of having a game built on the PC, rather than being crippled into a wimpy baby version for the sake of making it fit on a console.
I really wish there was an achievement called "Break the first rule" and you'll earn it by digging straight down at least 10 blocks Edit: At first i was gonna say that you unlock the achievement by dying after digging but it would be awful in hardcore
honestly, i just cant believe that minecraft has gone from a simple block game into whatever you can call minecraft now, i have not played minecraft in years and this update honestly just blew up my mind and is definetely better than the nether update in my very own opinion, i kinda hope that they add more things into minecraft that would make it way more interesting in the future.
I think that's because this update is the longest awaited and most demanded, and honestly I'm glad they took the time to do it right. Especially since it still manages to feel somewhat like vanilla while still being amazing, something that most mods just couldn't quite capture. The last version I played in any appreciable capacity was 1.12, which to me feels comparatively new, but looking back I realize is several years old now. I am equally awestruck.
Tip: if you want to mine straight down in 1.18 I would suggest using the tactic that people use to dig straight down in the nether! (Dig a 1x2 hole and crouch in the middle and keep mining both) idk if I did a good explanation.
I bet some "to the core" players are mad once they found out instead of making a long and hard journey to the core of the Earth they can now just "whoops took one step too far, time to fall to the core of the Earth with no troubles at all".

1.18 caves are great but i wish that the new system was kinda fused with the old one. as a whole, i liked the old caves more, and those huge-ass underworld caves could be implemented on specific biomes or set to generate rarer, along with the caves that used to be used before
Would be cool if eventually they made caves even deeper and implemented a sort of gaseous hazard, where you'd use the parrots in game to sense and they'd start making noise indicating danger just like real life miners in the past used parakeets to detect toxic gas.

digging straight down in old caves isnt actually too bad i think. lava is always like the main hazard, but it is audible, and mostly spawns at y11 so just stop at 20 to be safe. the main hazard was falling through a ravine. not everyone can use a water bucket in a panic. but new cave generation, large falls are a lot more likely.

Digging straight down definitely got buffed in 1.18. Instead of miserably burning in lava, all you need here is some well placed water or a decent amount of timing for an MLG bucket and you wont have to say goodbye to your precious stuff.
Pro Tip: When digging straight down, dig 2 blocks side by side and stand on the middle. Break the blocks on the left first and then on the right. This way youll see whats below.
Me and some friends made a world using the experimental datapack that added the 1.18 features to 1.17. Literally underneath the house we made at spawn was a massive cavern that one of us nearly fell down into because of how they were digging. It was insane
No joke I had those huge and lush caves in 1.16.5 thanks to Young's better caves, it felt different world when I dug down. Sad to see him not updating mod to 1.18.1... it would have been soo good.
The problem I have with the update is that it ruined the old mountains with the snow level start coordinate increase, and made small caves from cozy to pathetic. The changes do look cool, but it makes the survival experience more annoying a little.

What do you guys actually think of the new caves and how massive they are? I feel like its so easy to find any ore now because you found a massive cave and strip mining becomes irrelevant. And getting lost in 1.18 sucks because the path up is just so significant. Like in 1.17 if you got lost in a cave you mine up stairs to the surface now it takes years lol
Also needing like 4 stacks of torches before a mining trip sucks. In 1.17 you just really needed one
