Sam Cushing is: The most sincere, kind, caring, STRONG, BRAVE, genuine person I have encountered on You Tube. I myself have, for several years now lived with Anxiety as well as depression. Most people don’t realize that a person can suffer from both at the same time. I have found that therapy with a professional can be extremely helpful. Stay strong, you brave soul.

@@samcushing Thats exactly why your advice hits home with many. I am a counselor for adult survivors of childhood abuse. I myself was physically abused until the age of 15 when I left home to save myself. Even as an adult I still deal with issues because of my past. I am told that the advice and counseling that I give people is exactly what they need to hear and is working well for them. It never goes away for most of us but we learn to overcome it and not let it hold us back from a productive fulfilling life. So Sam what I'm saying is you are so much more helpful than you know for many people. Please don't sell yourself short and continue to speak out knowing you're helping more people than you could possibly imagine. God bless you brother, Love from Denver, Justin ❤🙂🤝🏼

This touched a nerve in so many ways. As a kid I struggled coming to terms with my sexuality and just wanted to be liked. I used humour to mask how I was feeling inside and at 39 I still do it. Sadly my dad died at a young age and this made my anxiety go through the roof. I now use Sams videos to help my mind and physical well being and for that I am truly grateful. A lot of the LGBTQ+ community struggle and their own stories can have a huge impact on their adult life and it’s true we should really talk more about things without feeling like it’s a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of strength and if it helps 1 person it’s worth it x

Sam, I am 65 years old and gay, having come out when I was in medical school in 1982. The process of "coming out" has taken a lifetime: no body wants to be 'despised and rejected' (see aria in Handel's 'Messiah' by the same title). What I have come to know is that the coming out process was principally an exercise for myself on my path of increasing authenticity. It takes courage. You have shown immense courage in all the sharing you have done on your channel that is geared toward helping and prospering the rest of us. You are clear about your selfless motives for wanting to share this intimate part of yourself. In many ways like you, I had nervous ticks in my youth. They included "necking" (stretching our the neck as you illustrated in this video), eyelid spasms, and most dreadfully, the onset of a full body blush whenever someone made me the focus of attention; the harder I tried to prevent its onset, the more forcefully it would manifest. Imagine my deep, deep sense of shame that everyone around me could see the erythemic blotches all over my face and body when this terror would arise! Later in life as I worked in the mental health field (second career after veterinary medicine), if I encountered a severely threatening or angry situation working with a patient, I was aware that I sometimes could not catch my breath and speak coherently because my mind was is such a fuddle of fear and heightened emotion...........I now see this as a very shallow form of disassociation: the mind disassociated from the immediate reality in order to cope...........although I want to be clear that this is purely my hypothesis. The Good News, as you state in this video, is that symptoms of stress often abate as one emerges from one's early twenties, and as self-assurance and esteem grow stronger and stronger. My own confidence level increased dramatically after I left college and met people who loved and cared about me for who I was, sans judgement or censure.
I have come a long way through the years, and what I want your viewership to know is that stress responses (anxiety disorders) are more common than you might imaging: it is the mind's way of coping with overwhelming experiences, and as such is an highly adaptable strategy for coping with trauma (witness those who have, by no fault of their own, experienced either acute, over-helming or prolonged, chronic low-grade trauma, whose brain's only strategy for survival has been to disassociate into multiple personalities. How magnificent and wonderful is Nature! These are not "broken people"; these are heroes and survivors!)
I have no idea what the inciting trauma in my own life might have been when I was younger and began with my nervous 'ticks". I knew I did not identify straight like the other boys and could not understand why I was different. I do not understand how I might have managed to internalize the hate of society for ones which it esteemed as 'different', for I was well loved and secure in my bringing up. The subtle, tacit judgement by society that dictates what is acceptable and what is not, is immensely insidious. Mine is a long 'coming out' story, and I will not bore the reader with it, however, I will say that when one finally comes to a place of self-acceptance, of realizing one is just as good as any other human, one has reached and attained and comported oneself in the world as a kind, compassionate, supportive and loving person toward others, one is acceptable in "God's eyes" as much as is any other human being that ever was , is or will be; and that one is likewise 'lovable, capable and connected', THEN the transformational and healing power into wholeness of the Universe erupts spontaneously, unforced and unscripted, descending like a warm, all-enveloping, powerful, yet gentle embrace of consoling, unconditional love and acceptance. (apologies for the run-on verbiage; this is being written extempore)
Your disclosure, spoken so eloquently and powerfully, is a tribute to your journey toward authenticity. It normalizes for the rest of us that *all* who come into this world are wounded in one way or another, and that to know any person truly, one has to get to know them deep within, by listening, loving and affirming. And, it is in relationship with others that we find ourselves. Therefore, "be with caution, bold!" ("Death of a Favorite Cat Drowned...." Tomas Gray). I wish I had had the courage you display in your videos, but I followed my own process, and it has worked worked our well for me. Today, although older, I feel like I have lived a wholesome, giving life of service to others, and as a result, I feel more centered and grounded, better adjusted and acceptable than ever I have been [to borrow way too many psycho-babblicons ; ) ]. It is a long process **for all of us**. Be not deceived: *every* human must (if they wish to grow and prosper) go through the 'Narrow Aisles of Pain' ("Solitude", by Ella Wheeler Wilcox - find in Wikipedia). Things get better as one grows oldedr and has more life experiences.
I am wishing you all the best that this wondrous life has to offer. You are *truly* just as perfect as the Creator has intended, as are likewise the rest of us. Banish fear with love, and rejoice in the World of which we are all part and parcel of this grand divinity. You are a blessing in our lives and we give thanks!

David J medication can have serious side effects. I know. I was on many different prescriptions. One had me “out of my mind”, no sleep, nightmares, night sweats, no libido, brain fog, zombie like feeling. I got off all these dangerous medications. Within a few weeks the heavy depression dissipated. There are unintended consequences to pharmaceuticals. I managed anxiety with B vitamins (food based) magnesium glycinate, and even tried St, John’s Wort for several weeks. Eliminating processed foods and exercising is also a great way to beat anxiety. You are very well not to cave in. I wish you the best.

Kudos and best wishes to you.

I am watching this video with nothing but understanding and a key lesson in mind - you never know what a person is going through on the outside versus whats on the inside. I commend your bravery to not do this only for World Mental Health Day but also to share a very personal side to yourself. Definitely deserves respect.

Sam, you never have to apologize for being yourself, but ask for an apology if they want you to be something else. You're unique as everyone is. Until we respect our own, and everyone’s, right to be different, to make our own choices, and create our own conscious realities free from imposition and pressure to conform, we will remain in a prison of our own making.and that's what causes stress. You can control the ticks through thought and honestly, I doubt many people even realized what you have had to live through on your journey. Keep it up Sam, you're doing great and good luck in your new position out in CA.

Thank you, Sam, what a wonderful gift you gave your viewers. Much of my story reflects yours, not very social in school, 'despised and rejected' as jdyak says in his comment. Horrible divorce with parents, tics, depression, anxiety, etc coupled with suicidal thoughts. Eventually, I grew out of it, but 5 years ago, I had a terrible series of events that destroyed me, and guess what? All of this came back. Still working on getting my balance back. This is not to discourage anyone, but rather to encourage and promote what you said: community, friends, conversation, and the rest are so important. If you have those, you can get through anything. Much love and thanks. Chicago is going to miss you, don't be a stranger!

Among the other things, what I deeply appreciate of you, Sam, is your humbleness. Because it's easy to show the positive aspects of one's life, as many youtubers and instagramers do, but it's certainly harder to talk about facts we can be ashamed of, which make us suffer or anyway remind us that our life is not utterly colourful. And you do have the courage of showing yourself for the person you are, that's what makes you very likeable. Me too have had to cope with anxiety, partially linked to lack of self-esteem, fortunately autogenic training helped me a lot. Thank you Sam, for everything!

Hi Sam, your whole life is an example of how amazing people are. You are the example that we may use to prove that no matter what you go through and the struggles that you have, you can overcome them and become a role-model not only for those people who have trauma and anxiety but also people without it. Of course everyones struggles are different, but you are a shining beacon for our travels in the chaotic winds of life. Thank you! People are icebergs of history and we can never know what is really going on beneath the surface. Assumptions can be very misleading. “The cover is not the book”

Everytime I notice people with ticks or hardly controllable behaviours, I ignore it. It bears no relevance to their value as a person and is none of my business to inquire about. You opening up about this is a gesture of trust, a gift and a personal sacrifice; I deeply appreciate it!
I got some of these things too. It isn't very difficult for me to suppress but I catch myself off guard quite often. For me it's not connected to anything, it's just things I got used to doing and can train to no longer do.

Hi Sam, thank you kindly for sharing your thoughts on such a private subject and you make perfect sense to me. I am gay professional man and senior in my field, I have always been conscious of my anxiety and how certain people can use this against me to achieve their own agendas. I do agree with your thoughts on keeping physically healthy but I have arthritis of the spine and live in chronic pain, but do keep this private as I fear being treated differently or also used against me. I’m 44 years old and been going a lot of your workouts and love them, but until I watched this I never knew nor saw any tick. We all have our own ticks in some way, so please don’t ever feel you need to hide anything about yourself. This was so helpful and personally I have troubles when reading and have been embarrassed for years. Watching this video made me feel not alone and showed my own ignorance against myself for the issues I’ve been dealing with my entire life. Your videos and the way you speak to your fans has made me feel better about myself and especially not alone. Plus, it’s just me and people can’t accept me for my flaws why do I even care? Thank you for being so honest and open and you could tell some things were hard to talk about, but you did and thank you!!!! I hope u know you’ve made others not feel so alone with issues similar to yours.

IT GETS BETTER, but acknowledging this process is half the problem solved. Thanks for helping many of us face this reality.
