  • I head out with my brother Jason on a late season general elk hunt. He is hunting with a traditional Muzzleloader using a patched round ball and open sights. With some inclement weather we hike to the top of the mountain after a group of elk and hope the trusty musket goes boom.

    I really enjoy seeing the traditional muzzleloader hunts Remi! I was fortunate to take a bull with my muzzleloader this year in MT and man what a challenge but very rewarding!

      Always tap your barrel with your gun tipped toward the drum assembly when you load your powder to insure the powder is as close to the cap as possible, and always run a nipple pick through your nipple to make sure it's clear of obstruction before capping and firing

    I did a 4th season rifle cow hunt w my lymans .54 w a round ball. I also had my .300 wby on my pack lol worked out well though and got a nice 40 yd shot. It's almost cos play just the feel of that rifle and pulling the hammer back seting the set trigger then that big cloud of smoke a lot of fun. Great video thanks for sharing.

    Great video man! I love how you hunt with so many different weapons and so many different species

    You know, it’s too bad more states don’t have “primitive weapons’ seasons”, meaning dedicated to traditional muzzleloader, such as flintlocks/percussion rifles. This would not include inline muzzleloaders. Such a great way to hunt!

      In West Virginia there’s a late season in January for a bear, deer, turkey tag with primitive weapons. Recurve or traditional bows and flintlock or percussion cap muzzleloader. Also PA has a super long flintlock late season. I agree it would be great for more states to open opportunities for it. They are a challenge.

      Many states would benefit from making their late season a restricted weapon season. It’s a matter of getting the hunting community to realize that they have the same opportunity but have to work harder. I never really thought that way until I started hunting with a recurve.

      inline muzzleloading was developed in the 1700s by JS Pauley. How is that not traditional?

    Late season front stuffer hunts are where it’s at. I’m throughly addicted to it. Misfires cost me a buck a a couple opportunities on a spike bull here. Even with that it’s still so much fun.

    I’ve got both in-line and side lock muzzy loaders and by and far the side lock is more fun. My 30yrs ago my grandfather bought me an old 50cal TC Hawken.

    Awe man, tough one. My dad just gave me a .58 caliber sidelock rifle kit that his friend's father never put together. It's on my list of winter projects to build the gun. If it shoots half-decent I think I'm going to put in for a black powder elk tag that would let me hunt during the rut. It's in a pretty rugged wilderness area, so I better start getting in shape now...

    Love your work and loved the experience. On a note to have your powder go off every time the cap does, when I hunt with mine in the cold and harsh weather, after I load the gun, I pull the nipple and fill the nipple hole with powder as well. Then put the nipple back in and pick it. “Should” always ignite as long as the cap goes off. Keep up the good hunting experiences.

      @RemiWarren  11 дней назад +1

      That’s a great suggestion! I did pick it right before but we didn't add the extra powder.

    • @davidsproul5562
      @davidsproul5562 11 дней назад

      @ It is a little more time consuming but I have always had ignition when taking the time to do so and you can pick the nipple when it is out. All in all great hunt you had, thanks for sharing

      One old timer told me they used to put 3 gr of ffffg in the nipple before capping to make sure it would go off.

    Mr Remi, the .54 Caliber- does it kick like, massively? Or is it not as bad as I think it is? I have a CVA .50 Hawken with stainless octagon barrel. But I’m afraid to shoot it.

      You can adjust the strength of the load, powder and bullet weights, to manage recoil.

    Same thing happened to me hunting from the ground on a coyote. I saw a coyote coming up the hill straight in my direction. I was shooting a .50 cal TC New Englander loaded with a 385 grain maxiball. The coyote was closing fast. I had a 2 1/2 power fixed scope and when I pulled the trigger, all I could see was fur in the scope. Cap snapped but no boom. I educated that coyote at 10 yards and he shot out of there like a rocket. I put another cap on and sat there for a while longer and I got to thinking. What if it doesn't go off AGAIN? So I swung over to a tree and touched if off and blew bark all over the place. If I remember right, thinking back to cleaning it before the hunt, I forgot to dry fire a cap thru it to dry out the barrel and nipple before I loaded it. Also, I started out using Powerdex powder, but later shifted to black powder. Never had a misfire with blackpowder.
