It’s funny how you say about WHSmith’s units being refurbs, since one of the Norwich branches has “upgraded” their’s recently. Two of the four have been completely replaced with SelfServ 90s, however the other two have been completely bodged, since they’ve replaced the screens, scanners, note acceptors/dispensers, potentially bagging areas (I can’t remember), and receipt printers, however have left the original chassis, and probably a load of other parts. A similar thing happened to all of the cash-accepting ones at Tesco Lowestoft, however I didn’t think to get a picture of one last time I was there. A few manned tills had been taken out for an expansion, but with Tesco being Tesco, the bodged ones will likely remain.
I never said anything about WHSmith, that was poundland. In terms of shops refurbishing their own self service tills, they refurbished the Older SelfServ R5 self checkouts at my local sainsbury's around 2019 with new scanners screens and software, they're still there to this day and they very recently installed 2 R6Ls that look near identical to the refurbished units, they just look shinier.
