great footage appreciate the full timeline other channels cut away the second someone falls off but thats not the end of the story sometimes its the beginning
As an experienced surfer and been in some heavy situations and usually when I get flogged I swim with the whitewater and let it take me eventually to the shore, except on a few occasions at a local spot in where the waves head into rocks, that requires another tactic. But Jesus that was super heavy. The drone footage makes it look smaller than it actually really is, mad respect to the surfer and his rescuers.
Not sure about all the comments on this not being a gnarly wipeout, looked to me like this man was knocking on deaths door after all those hold downs, and position.
And flack with the ski crew, I’ve never been in those conditions but those guys looked like they were doing the best they could to rescue, and they did. Hertel, keep your head up high and keep doing what you love. Let the haters hate

Love to see the whole event uncut from begining to the end and the music choice.
I was thinking that It would be great to establish a safety guideline in which the drone pilot contributes to the rescue by staying right on top of the surfer so as to help the rescuers to find him.
Thank you! That‘s interesting you say that, actually we have used the drone on a couple of occasions this way! Especially when I am connected with them via radio it has turned put to be pretty helpful from time to time!

I live in Nazare.. the only good thing of this video was when the surfer ran out of the ocean safe!!Don't be mistaken the surfing is fabulous but so incredibly dangerous

Seriously, as a long time solo surfer, I don't understand why most surfers are reacting so unnaturally to whitewash. Instead of trying to fight it, and holding up the position, leave it to drag you to the beach (unless there are rocks or dangerous geological formations). Turn your back on it, hold your breath for a few seconds when it hits you, use its power to drift you away. I learnt about this technique from local Polynesian surfers. This technique is, both, time and energy saving. Nowadays, surfers are so accustomed to the idea that the jet ski is going to pick you up, that they forget the most basic and fundamental natural reactions.

Thank you! That was the first day of filming bigger waves here. Great question actually!
So my idea was that I wanted to share my emotions - that I went through filming this - with the viewer. So the guy riding and the guys on the ski are friends of mine. The surfer is quite new to big wave surfing (although he is a great surfer/ long boarder already). So there was a strong personal connection.
So in general all sequences of emotions I tried to replicate by using matching music and sound design
- Before this wave he had a pretty good one that impressed me so I was in a very hyped state and confident state.
- Going into this one I didn't expect him to crash at all
- Really quickly my hype changed completely to "oh shit, is he ready for that"? (Also I noticed that the rescue seemed to be difficult).
- While he is under the water I wanted to push the feeling of being completely on your own, trapped in the violent side of nature not knowing the outcome
- From then it started to get more intense in a scary way, the longer he was getting hit by wave after wave
- Long story short, the video/ music shows the rollercoaster of emotions from hype, confidence, surprise, curiosity, fear and then it started changing back to that heroic "we did it" feeling, turning back into relief and confidence.
That's pretty much it. :D

Could've been wiped up on the 🎿 jetski picked up on the first two occasions but that being said, there's 🗻 mountains of water so 🌊 you be prepared for a flogging!
Agreed ski guy needs to be more aggressive. I'm sure it is hard to read though in all that white water with a wall of white water coming up on your tail. I'm not sure why the surfer wasn't making his way to the beach faster.
@@semosancus5506 he got on just in time with that wedge of white water about to engulf him.. I've been in situations like that (not as big obviously) but after a few take downs, sometimes you start to let go and feel drained, lose hope and that's not good - it's better with experience, being fit and fearless and trust in God 🙏
@@Yahuah780 I certainly admire their fitness. You have to be solid muscle to survive these big waves.
Do you have to hire a jet ski support team if you surf there or does the area provide them for everyone?
Hi, good question :)
Even though media mostly shows the rider going down a massive wave, in reality most riders are part of a whole team. So minimum is two experienced riders sharing a ski, towing and saving each other. That's on smaller days. On bigger days the safety is a lot more crucial and most teams have minimum one back up safety drive (plus spotters on the land etc.). I'm not an expert about this though! Other option for individual riders is hiring a team to provide this service for them.
I would kick my ski drivers ass. His job is to get you outa harms way. He didn’t even try for like 5 waves. I understand its dangerous but that’s a what you signed for. It’s like getting jumped and your friends just watch you get beat up, and then pick up off the ground saying we here we got you. Little late.

Hehe I see where you're coming from! When I filmed that it was the biggest waves I have ever seen, the longest hold down that I have witnessed and it started getting scary when the next waves kept coming at him!
If you are used to this then your "threshold" is - understandably - a different one. Looking back at this now I have seen more sketchy ones that luckily all went well. However being here since the season started I wouldn't consider this "the smallest day I have ever seen". Then you should spend more time here

Tend to agree on that, what if jetskis were electric. To be honest I used to make 200 km by car each week to go surfing, wetsuits, surfboards production, goodies and wax are all big polluters. Not even talking about planes

@@johannes_hertel As a surfer myself of over 35 years you know as well as I that wave slow rolled from the peak.The guy just caught 2 smallish wave on the head.Not really on the Wipeout of the year highlight reel.
@@tr7b410 I understand that you being an experienced surfer have definitely seen more intense wipeouts! Luckily this wasn't one of the really bad ones. Although, I know the rider and spoke to him afterwards. The way he fell and got hit by the wave was still scary and what tired him out was how long he was getting hit by waves. Not in regard of being held down for a crazy long time but it just being physically tiring keeping yourself up in that strong white wash that doesn't really give you any updrift

There is a big difference though of just putting out shitty content because of an ego driven urge to get attention or ways to not make good stuff end up in dust.
I am not trying to please everybody and there will always be some who don't like what I'm doing and I honestly don't care because no matter who you are or what you do, there will always people who judge you. :)
So I am aware that there will be opinions as yours and I respect that. It does not bother me though and I am always open towards constructive feedback.
