  • AZALEA PLANT CARE for FLOWERING AZALEAS GROWING IN POTS is a plant care video by popular plant expert, Shirley Bovshow. Learn how to care for azalea plants indoors through the cold season and keep them alive so that in the spring when it starts to warm up, you can take the azalea plants outdoors to continue growing in your patio! When flowering azaleas start to outgrow their containers, repot azaleas with a special potting soil mix made for acid-loving plants like the azaleas, camellias, and gardenias!
    ROOM TEMPERATURE FOR AZALEAS: Did you know that azalea plants need specific indoor temperatures in order to flower indoors? Warm temperatures may cause flowers to drop.
    FERTILIZING AZALEAS : Less is more! Shirley explains why it NOT beneficial to fertilize flowering azaleas while in bloom! Watch the video and find out why!
    WATERING AZALEAS : Shirley shows you how to access if your azalea plant needs watering by picking it up to see how heavy it is, and other tips for proper watering.
    SOIL: Azaleas thrive in acidic soil like other shade-loving plants. Learn the details!
    Potted azaleas, azalea tree, and "florist indoor azaleas" from the garden center and supermarkets are popular gift plants. Unfortunately, many people throw away their potted azaleas after the flowers stop blooming! Don't do that! Follow Shirley's easy azalea care tips and enjoy this romantic houseplant for years to come!

    Received Azaleas today for Valentine's Day from my sweet fiancé. I'm a novice planter, and this video clarified a lot of confusion I had on how to take proper care of it. Look forward to seeing it bloom and grow tall like the ones in your video!
    Also, I have a question, I googled proper care before watching this video and it said that azaleas should be sheared before July after it has bloomed. Do you recommend that?

    I followed her directions of watering by submerging pot in water. My azaleas died within a few weeks bc mold started growing on the top soil and I couldn’t take it out. I tried repotting it in fresh soil but the roots were too soaked and ended up with root rot!

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  Год назад

      I'm sorry to hear that. Submerging plants in water is an acceptable way to water plants. How many times did you do it and for how long?

    • @deea3586
      @deea3586 Год назад

      Hi,
      I submerged it in water once a week. I submerged it in long enough to see the top of the soil wet. I let it drain in my sink until there were no more drips then returned it to the bigger pot holding the potted plant. It’s an indoor plant with indirect light. After the second time of water submersion I noticed fungus growing on the top of the soil. I waited a few days later to see if letting the top soil dry out would take carethe fuzzy fungal growth but it remained. I took it out of the soil and saw that the roots were really soggy. I washed the roots and clipped most of the rot out and placed it with new soil mixed in with some coffee grounds. I didn’t water until a day or two later. After that the fungus came back and it didn’t recover :(

    Hi, I have a Satsuki azalea Bonsai who is currently suffering. I need help with her desperately please. She has browning leaves like crazy. I water her about twice a week and I always make sure she is never dry and check the soil with my finger as I do with all my plants and deeply water her. I live in zone 7 and its currently fall. I checked her for root rot, she has none. I have her placed right in the corner next to an east facing window so she gets indirect sunlight that is bright by mornings in a roughly 70 degrees room. I put her outside in cooler weather because as you explained in the video, they like cooler temperatures, and she still got more brown leaves. I checked for pests and bugs, and I found none at all. I added pine needles to the soil because I heard that would help with the acidity and I gave her a little fertilizer a week ago, and she is still upset. She is still browning leaves like crazy. Some leaves are brown by the stem, some are brown on the tips, some of the leaves are completely brown and fall off, some are brown and still stay on her, the small leaves, the big leaves, even some are brown even on the new leaves and new stem shoots. She is even growing many new shoots, but those are even getting brown on the tips. She is starting to lose so much that it looks like she has bald patches which is so sad because just two weeks ago she was so full and beautiful. Apart from the brown, her leaves are the most vibrant glorious green shade ever. When I first received her in the mail approximately 3 weeks ago, she was very dry and with yellow leaves. I watered her deeply and she recovered in 2 days and she was so green and beautiful. After she recovered, I decided to repot her in a slightly bigger pot, and She stayed absolutely gorgeous for a week or so and then she started browning and losing leaves like crazy. I at first read that they don't like constantly fluctuations in temperatures which I had her in my bedroom far from a southern facing window, about 5 feet, and an air conditioner. Upon reading this, I moved her to the spot I mentioned above beside the eastern window. I even removed all her brown leaves just yesterday in the afternoon at around 3 o clock because I read online that there was a chance it could be a fungus and to treat it you need to remove all the leaves. Much to my dismay, I was heart broken to see that same evening, yesterday at 7 o clock, she already started to brown again on some of the tips. I don't know why she is browning and I need help desperately please. Is it she could be doing this from winter, and even though I keep her inside she can still detect winter right? are all Satsuki Azaleas evergreen, or do they also drop leaves no matter what? would she do this even in a warm room? Am I worrying too much and I don't need to worry about it or is it serious? Please help. Thank you so much for the help, I desperately need it and the last thing I want is to lose her. I know you are good at replying and I know you are good with azaleas, so as nicely as possible I really need your help and any advice you can give. Thank you

      Hi Kamberly, Apologies because it appears that I did not see your question. How is you azalea doing? Just a question: When you repotted it, did you use acidic soil? Azaleas require special soil with more acidity. It looks like you tried addressing other possible reasons but still had loss of leaves and brown leaves. How is your azalea doing now?

    Shirley can you please tell me if I should and if so how to deadhead the blooms of my Azalea as they take an awfully long time to dry up and drop off the plant
    Also should I keep the plant on the gravel tray in the summer months or should I put it outside until autumn. I'm in the UK

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  7 месяцев назад

      Hi! Yes deadheading, or removing spent blooms, can help improve the appearance of your azalea and encourage new growth. The best time to deadhead azaleas is right after they finish blooming in the spring. Using your fingers or pruners, carefully pinch or cut off the faded flowers just above the first set of healthy leaves or buds. Make sure not to damage the surrounding healthy foliage. Azaleas often produce clusters of flowers. Instead of deadheading the entire cluster, focus on the individual spent flowers within the cluster. If your azalea has developed seed pods after blooming, it's advisable to remove them as well. This prevents the plant from directing energy into seed production.

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  7 месяцев назад

      Azaleas generally prefer being outdoors, as they thrive in natural light and air circulation. Placing your azalea outside during the summer months can be beneficial for its overall health,

    Thank you for the wonderful video. I do think they are fussy plants though. I think i did everything right this time but my azalea dropped all of it's leaves for the second time 😭 is there any hope at all or is it a goner? The roots looked fine when I replanted it and the brances had green on the inside. But I am not sure if they ever survive this. It's been a few weeks already and it's not changing.

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  3 года назад +1

      Hi SingingCrowie! Azaleas are either evergreen or deciduous. Deciduous azaleas drop all of their leaves in the fall. In dry weather, they may drop their leaves earlier than usual. Their leaves then grow back in the spring so wait and see how it does. Just give it the proper care and conditions it needs.

      Hi, For starters, remove the outer plastic wrap and give it a good dip in water. Make sure it drains really well for awhile. Without seeing your plant it is impossible for me to diagnose the problem. It could be heat or sun stress, pest infestation, or a fungal disease. Hi can you tell me why my florist Azalea tree's blooms have brown around the edges?? Thank you in advance.

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  7 месяцев назад +1

      Brown edges on Azalea tree blooms can be attributed to several factors. Usually its due to watering Issues. Azaleas prefer consistently moist, well-draining soil. If the soil becomes too dry, the edges of the blooms may turn brown. Ensure that the soil is kept consistently moist but not waterlogged.
      On the flip side, overwatering can lead to root rot, which may cause browning of the flower edges. Make sure the soil allows excess water to drain away, and adjust your watering practices accordingly.

How is it called? And also...i can't have it indoors because it's toxic for my cat. Where should i keep it outdoors? In sun or shade? How do i keep moisture around it? Sometimes it's hot and dry outside, but not all the time as I live in England, but summers seem hotter than usual.

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  4 года назад +1

      Hi Marina, I am not certain exactly the scientific name because this was a while ago. However, it is an ornamental azalea topiary tree that is from a greenhouse, not a hardy one meant for outside. Unlike outdoor azaleas and rhododendrons, indoor azaleas are not frost hardy and are therefore not suitable, in frost-prone areas, for permanently planting in the garden when their period of flower is over. But you can take your potted azalea outdoors during appropriate weather. They like partial shade with about 4 hours of sun. Keep it uniformly moist so the roots don't dry out, but azaleas can't tolerate soggy soil.

      Sorrry I misread your question. This is Shirley of Garden Center TV. If your azalea came from an indoor florist, (market or florist shop) it is an azalea that was cultivated for indoors. Sometimes these indoor azaleas (which can be transitioned to outdoors) have decorative foil wrap. An outdoor azalea is usually in a black plastic container and seems heavier than florist azaleas. If you want to transition a florist azalea outdoors, keep it as a potted plant rather than planting in the soil.

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes

      Hi Jason, It depends the type of azalea you purchased. If it was outside when you purchased it, then it is likely a hardy azalea suited to outdoors. If you purchased it indoors (usually wrapped in pretty foil paper) then it is an indoor azalea plant. Most hardy azaleas will do ok in zones 5-9 so yours might be fine outdoors in Florida. They are hardy to minus 40 degrees F. so yours should be ok.

      Hi Emily, Thanks for watching. Azalea is highly toxic to dogs, cats, chickens, livestock, and all pets. Even a very small amount of ingestion can be very harmful to your pet. They are toxic for humans and children also. The toxins are even present in honey made with the nectar of azalea flowers. If you have azaleas in your landscape, protect them from young children and grazing animals by planting them out of reach or within the boundaries of a fence.

      @EdenMakers 3 года назад

      Hi Greg. Thanks for your questionl. I have some for you before I can guess what the problem is. Is your azalea an "florist" azalea or a "landscape azalea?" Florist azaleas are usually sold at markets or florist shops in full bloom with a decorative foil wrap around the plastic grow container. Landscape azaleas are sold in garden centers and are meant to be planted in the ground.
      Either way, if you bought your azalea in full bloom, it isn't unusual for the blooms to start falling around the same time. Blooms do not last forever on an azalea plant. Health should be gauged on the condition of the leaves rather than flowers in your case.

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  6 месяцев назад

      Hi Judy, Here is a bit lengthy instructions but hopefully it will answer your question.
      After the flowering period is over, you can prune your azalea to maintain its shape and encourage new growth. Trim back any dead or leggy branches to promote bushiness.
      Azaleas thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your plant near a window where it can receive plenty of natural light, but avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hotter parts of the day.
      They prefer cooler temperatures, ideally between 60-75°F. Avoid placing your plant near heaters or air conditioning vents, as extreme temperature fluctuations can stress the plant.
      Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly until the excess water drains out from the bottom of the pot. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as this can cause stress to the plant.
      Azaleas prefer high humidity. You can increase humidity around your plant by placing it on a humidity tray filled with pebbles and water, or by using a room humidifier.
      Feed your azalea with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring through fall), following the instructions on the fertilizer package.
      Azaleas may enter a period of dormancy after blooming. During this time, growth may slow down, and the plant may shed some leaves. Continue to care for your azalea as usual, providing it with the proper light, water, and temperature conditions.

      Hi and thanks for watching! Moving your azalea outside into a large pot can be a good idea, but you'll want to ensure it's placed in a spot where it can receive filtered sunlight or partial shade. It is important to gradually introduce your azalea to outdoor conditions to prevent shock.

      Hi and thanks for watching! Yes extreme heat can be a concern for azaleas, especially if they are exposed to direct sunlight in hot climates. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit can stress azaleas and lead to leaf scorch, wilting, or even death if not adequately watered and protected. In summary, azaleas prefer moderate temperatures.

      Hi Clarivel, Thanks for watching. Did you know that your azalea needs acidic soil? Did you plant it in acidic soil? If not, I encourage you to repot it again with a soil that is acidic. You can buy some soil made just for azaleas at your local garden center.

      @@FoodieGardenerDiabetes thank you. I looked high and low for a specific acidic soil but never found anything. I mixed regular soil with peat when I did the repotting. Maybe I can add more peat to the mix to raise the proportion. I tried to look at EB stone but they don’t supply to Florida

    Very helpful! I receive a large one as a gift a month ago. My question is about deadheading the flowers once they fade. Do you snip them all the way to the bottom, or just pull them off? Thanks.

      Hi @Justme. Azaleas don't need to be "dead headed" but they look a lot cleaner when you remove spent flowers!

      Sorry to hear that. I still stand by my instructions. I’ve been taking care of plants for over 20 years as a professional and I have to guarantee my plants with my clients. So these are steps that work
      Hard to say what was wrong with your plants.

      @@FoodieGardenerDiabetes I had two azaleas, one white and the other red. Before that, I poured a glass of water every day. Azaleas had beautiful flowers. According to your instructions, I immersed them in water for a few minutes and then put them in an ornamental flowerpot to dry. The next day brown spots appeared on the flowers and on the third day the flowers dried up completely. The leaves began to sag and gradually fell off. I tried to push into a new substrate for Rodedondrody and Azalka but it didn't help. Both azaleas perished. What I did wrong.

    Can the tree be planted in a pot outdoors?

    • @FoodieGardenerDiabetes
      @FoodieGardenerDiabetes  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, azalea trees can be planted in pots outdoors. Azaleas are versatile plants that can thrive in containers as long as their specific needs are met. Here are a few considerations:
      Container Size: Choose a pot that is large enough to accommodate the root system of the azalea and allow room for growth. A diameter of at least 18 inches is recommended for a single azalea tree.
      Drainage: Ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Use a well-draining potting mix specifically formulated for acid-loving plants like azaleas.
      Sunlight: Azaleas prefer partial shade to full shade, especially in hotter climates. Place the potted azalea in a location where it will receive filtered sunlight or dappled shade.
      Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and adjust the frequency based on environmental conditions.
      Fertilization: Feed the azalea with a balanced fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants, following the instructions on the product label. Apply fertilizer during the growing season, typically in spring and summer.
      Winter Care: In colder climates, protect the potted azalea from freezing temperatures by moving it to a sheltered location or insulating the pot. Mulching around the base of the plant can also help conserve soil warmth.
      Pruning: Regularly prune the azalea to maintain its shape and encourage healthy growth. Pruning can be done after flowering to remove spent blooms and shape the plant as desired.
