My wife and I saw Robert at Murphy's the night of this taping for this video. I was so "Starstruck" because I never thought in a million years that I would ever see Robert in person. My shyness prevented me from approaching Robert but since I love watching people it is amazing to see Robert sharing his life with others. What you see in his videos is what you see in real life with him. He truly is very friendly and very down to earth. Thank you Robert for doing what you do and may God continue to bless you, your family and your crew/friends. TGBTG...

I understand there’s many ways to eat the amazing blue crab. Up here in Baltimore there’s only one, steamed in apple vinegar, natty bo topped with ol bay or J O.
For those wondering JO is like ol bay just very coarse. It hold up better in my opinion while in the steamer.

I had a crab that could paint - I named him Leonardo Da Pinchi.
Before Covid there was a restaurant/pub called Bubba Lous in St Petersburg Fl on Tuesday nights had all you can eat crab ( snow ). They would put a paper grocery bag on the floor next to your chair for shells and just bring you steaming hot crabs and butter and we would eat our weight in crabs - it is difficult to explain how special that was. I am not a big seafood person but there is something so exceptional as the miraculous taste of crab.

The one caution I'd give about live cleaning is a personal anecdote. I knew an old salty captain who was the closest of family friends who decided to try the live clean ("Like the yankees do it," as my Pop said) for the first time in his life. He ended up getting poked or scratched by a shell, caught the flesh-eating disease which eventually killed him. So take good care when handling sharp live sea creatures of all types. Love the channel, love seeing the Bay. Crabbing with a friend was my first job. Cheers!

Love soft shell blue crab! As a teen I lived off the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia and Maryland. During the summers we would catch them with a net attached to a long pole. In the other hand, we would have a chicken back or neck attached to a string. Even at night, they would swim on top of the water and we would catch them off of a a friend’s pier. I have always cooked them alive with Old Bay, beer, vinegar and water. The more seasoning, the more beer would drink (when we got to be of age). Now I live in the Pacific Northwest, you eat 2 crabs , you are full! With Blue Crabs, you pick and eat 2 dozen, your fingers are sore.....and you are still hungry! Both kinds are delicious! They are really fat this time of year.

I live north of Brisbane on the east coast of Australia. WE get two main varieties of crabs in the bays and estuaries. In winter we get blue swimmers also called sand crabs. Commercially they are cooked and sold whole. They are cooked in sea water with no seasoning. Most people who catch there own cook them in sea water(no seasoning) clean and wash them in sea water and chill them in an ice slurry. They are eaten with fresh lemon juice or white vinegar with a light dusting of salt and pepper. In summer we get mud crabs also called mangrove crabs. They are again cooked in fresh seawater. All the commercial crabs are sold whole many non pro crabbers will clean their muddies before cooking in seawater with no seasoning. In Qld we are legally allowed 4 crab pots and we return females to the water. Cheers Ron.

Steaming the bluecrabs with a can of beer and white vinegar and a whole lot of the BEST crab seasoning OLD BAY. Once you layer the LIVE crabs in a steaming pot, meaning a pot with holes so the crabs don't sit in the liquid which then makes the meat MUSHY, you then take the liquid mixture and the Old Bay and try to pour on as many crabs as possible. You can also sprinkle the a bit more of the Old Bay straight on top of the crabs. Slow cook the liquid, steaming the crabs until they turn a pretty orange. The reason you put so much seasoning is because when you open the crabs and all that seasoning is all over your fingers, you get the wonderful flavor on the meat from your fingers. Only a true Marylanders or their offspring (my mom and dad and their families grew up in Maryland), but my father took a job in south GA, near the Florida border and then they started a family. My parents were raised on cooking crabs and shrimp this way and my father had to have his mother send us cans of Old Bay from the 60's thru the 90's because it wasn't sold down down here in Florida yet. A little FYI also (The yellow colored substance found inside a cooked crab is known as the hepatopancreas, and is an organ responsible for filtering impurities from the crab's blood. Some people consider this a tasty and delicious part of eating crabs. It is not necessarily bad for you to eat it and often times it adds a nice flavor), in the shell is the often called the best part of eating crabs. I have watched Rob kill the crabs before cooking them as he calls it the most humane thing and You Tube probably doesn't want him to kill the crabs by steaming them live on camera because they think it's not humane. According to Science Focus, the flesh of lobsters, crabs, and other shellfish is full of bacteria that can be harmful to humans if ingested. ... Cooking shellfish alive reduces the chances of vibriosis-causing bacteria ending up on your plate. Of course you want to make sure you remove the lungs. Everything else in a crab besides the shell or the cavities the meat is in are editable. Sorry for this being so long, but it kills me to see so much of a blue crab wasted. Granted I know everyone's tastebuds are different and to alot of people they have never heard of cooking crabs this way, all I am saying is maybe you ought to try crabs this way.

Up here in MD we call the "poop" the "mustard" and we cook our crabs whole. A lot of old timers love eating the "mustard". I have lived in MD all my life and picked thousands of crabs and have never seen anyone "clean" a crab. Also- common mistake thinking that we always cook crabs in old Bay. You can,but typically JO is used for the steaming and old Bay is great to use while picking to dip or sprinkle on the meat. Also, you are either a picker or a saver, where some people make a pile of the meat and eat it at the end of the picking session.
