The Midnight Special years of being on air were the best years of my life. 1972-1981 I was 9-18 years old. All of the bands that I loved, I got to see on TMS because I was a poor kid living in a small town in Texas with my grandmother and didn't have the ability or money to go see any concerts. But seeing those bands on the Midnight Special made me love music and the bands even more. Thank you for bringing those memories back!
One of the first and THE greatest power ballads of all time.
At the 1:50 mark, funny that the two male backup singers walk onto stage. Lead singer Kevin Cronin sings with such enunciation on his words. Nobody else does it like he does. A speech teacher's dream come true.
Ha, that was interesting when they walked on. Shows the beauty of replicating music live back in the days rather playing backing tracks. Kevin Cronin is a true underrated talent.
REO Speedwagon will always be a part of my teenage years... "Peelin' the years away, and we can't we can't relive it."
We sure experienced the best era of music... phenomenal memories! 😊
Happy Thursday... thank you for sharing! 💖
God it was so good... 🎩🌄🌠
Wow that’s great to read ! I agree about 70s being the best in music. It really was. ❤🎉🎉🎉
I'm getting Ozark vibe here and it's good
What a bassline!!
(:
I was thinking the same. I turned the bass up!
Of all the mid-end of 70‘s, early 80‘s band like Fotomaker, Boston, Foreigner, Toto etc. Reo had the best songs, best lead singer and best guitarist, best harmony singers. 🤩🤩🤩
1980. High Infidelity was the album. It seems every song on that album was on the charts. They definitely were being played on A.M. radio 📻 and on my cassette player and turn table. 1980. Yeah, I was just there.
So good! One of my favorite Speedwagon songs! They did an excellent job here. When they hit the chorus witht the backup singers, the crowd went wild! Memories of leaving home at that time kind of fit with the title, anyway, but we can all relate to relationships ending. Weirdly, it’s got an uplifting vibe. Thanks, TMS!✌️💜
So good!
It's a song about breaking up...and hope.
Was never crazy about these guys, but compared to today's music, this sounds like Mozart.
Unfortunately you’re very right.
Go to bed, old man!
LOL I know me too !😂😂😂
listen to their live album from the ‘70’s “You Get What You Play For”.
They’re great
One of my favorites songs by them
I love this channel because so many of these songs were my background music growing up. Seeing these bands absolutely crush live is inspiring. Lots of great performances, but this and Heart's Crazy On You" are phenomenal!
Ty,Midnight Special for putting on amazing artist 🎉🎉
This is the essential break up song... Best played at maximum volume as you do doughnuts with your car in their yard.
😂😂😂
Think I saw them play @ a live rock n’ roll club in Tulsa before they made it big, bands would travel through town getting their feet wet. Have their album “You Can Tune a Piano, but you Can’t Tuna Fish”. Their band name, a real Truck, was a light motor truck model manufactured by REO Motor Car Company, it’s pretty cool looking. Bass player (I think) looks like John Schlitt of Head East.
What a SAD/HAPPY song,
Depending on the circumstance . . .
living on Tulsa time! we appreciate you! signed touring musician of the day!
@@DrummingMan1 How cool!! The ‘Tulsa Sound’ genre is known around the world & it was fantastic to grow up surrounded by it! 😉
Used to see this group play at The Red Lyon Inn in Champaign IL way back when… Great memories! Thank you for sharing all this great music!!
So, so glad i'm subscribed!
The Midnight Special RUclips channel is a 🎁 to the 🌎.
Kevin plays traditional chords in this one. In the 1978 clip of this song, he bars the guitar with his thumb like Hendrix did.
I wouldn't know about that, but there's definitely something about opening a song with an acoustic guitar and then powering in with the electric instruments. I liked it a lot!
REO Speedwagon- The Kings of the power ballad. The 1978 clip was uploaded not too long ago. He looks a little awkward in it playing it with his thumb because it's so unusual.
@@gregoryduncan3067For sure to the first part. The other... I'll take your word for it .😊
Yes he does... I remember that now as well.
Always loved Kevin's vocals !! 🎸
THANK YOU MIDNIGHT SPECIAL
And thanks Gary Richrath for showing that you ain't gotta rip out a flying solo on every occasion. Thanks for doing the opposite!!! He does a "George Harrison". Plays something completely complimentary and supporting the melody. RIP
I was thinking the same...
At the very end I am happy to report that I found Waldo!
😂
Stunning. I love this.
Kevin had some great hair back then
Howard Stern on lead vocals….
WNNNNBC!
REO have such strong live vocals. I can’t think of another band that the vocals sound so close to the album live. Are the backing vocals tracked?
Bee Gees.
I think the only part of that that was live was Kevin's vocals.
👍👍
Is this really live? I think so. But it sounds just like their studio album. Pretty impressive.
It seems like Kevin is singing over the backing track🤷♂️
Another appearance of REO Speedwagon on the Midnight Special was definitely lip-synced. I think the background vocals in this performance sound too dubbed over for just two background vocalists singing them.
It's all pre recorded except the lead vocals, I believe
Can anyone verify the maker of the acoustic guitar that he is playing? It looks like an Olson but I am not 100% sure.
Vocals over a backing track sounded good🙄. Gary “really” looked enthusiastic.
Sitting on the floor, what is this a 3rd period assembly in the school gym?
it's so they aren't standing in the way of the cameras. the alternative is a super tall stage or an empty rooms.
@@numskul No it's because they didn't want to add seating. Raising the camera 5 feet is not exactly hard.
Dude...It was the 70s. We didn't need any freaking seats...lol
@@Jreb1865😉 we were so very limber! 😂
You can tune a piano...
...but you can't tuna fish
