What Are Spiritus Systems Products Made Of?

  • Spiritus Systems products are not only versatile, modular, and easily reconfigurable, but they're built to be durable. Choosing the right materials is critical, explains Adam Holroyd from Spiritus. He's back to give Caleb (and us) an overview of the materials Spiritus gear is made of. The goal, says Adam, is to use the RIGHT material, not the cheapest material. Spiritus products are not only made in the U.S.A., but the materials used in them are also U.S.-sourced to meet the requirements of the Berry Amendment (10 USC Sec. 2533a) for being a Department of Defense supplier.
Many Spiritus products are made of genuine Cordura® nylon fabric because nylon is strong and stands up to the elements, including UV radiation. The higher a nylon fabric's "denier" number, the coarser the material. So 500 denier nylon is much softer and suppler than 1,000 denier cloth, which weighs a lot more but is not more resistant to abrasion. Spiritus employs a special process to ensure that colors stay consistent, so if you buy a Ranger Green item today, the color will match the Ranger Green item you bought last year.
Just like the Cordura® nylon, the hook-and-loop fastening material on Spiritus products is genuine Velcro®-brand product. (If the product isn't made by the Velcro® company, it cannot legally be sold as Velcro!) Spiritus carefully chooses material with very low infrared (IR) reflectivity. Your Spiritus gear isn't gonna light up and give your position away when an adversary scans the area with his NVG.
The nylon laminate material of Spiritus's chest rigs is actually laser-cut in-house (yes, they have their own laser cutter), which seals the edges and helps prevent them from fraying. The tough stuff that looks like carbon fiber on some of this gear? It's actually a laser-cut thermoplastic laminate. Spiritus actively works with mills and fabric manufacturers to develop new materials, including camouflage-patterned Velcro®.

Honestly Spiritus Systems is really appealing and it’s always great to hear about the background of the materials and what goes into it thanks guys 👍

I used to use 400D nylon fabric for making custom bags and other items. It wasn’t CORDURA but we discovered that the biggest limitation was sun exposure. UV eats nylon. For these applications, the items will last a very long time our testing showed failure only after prolonged, daily, all day exposure for a month or more. The first thing that failed was the nylon thread that we sewed our products with.

Great comment for us that think heavily about these fine minute details. I had was wondering if sun exposure would degrade nylon and other fabrics and by what degree. Your insight is helpful.

You could tell this guy was a bit nervous but I get where he is coming from. The NIR is a big part of the battlefield today, but also in the future its gonna be huge. Its hard to find a decent nylon thats compliant.

I feel like this video was made just for me. I left a snarky D-Bag comment is the previous video about coming from a commie county. I was very wrong. Good job guys. I always try and buy American. If not American a non commie country. When all else fails you sometimes have to buy from the big C. Y’all are great Americans.

That’s funny coincidence because I recently read how they grounded a bunch of our f-35s because some Chinese magnets were used instead of US manufactured magnets in some component. And as you said the components were supposed to be of US origin as per defense contract agreement.

while y'all are at it why don't you let Spiritus Systems to make a rig that us low income "poor's" can afford so those of us that are wives don't agree with our hobbies are not going to have a s__t fit over spending that kind of money for just a way to ergonomically effective and practical way to carry our magazines.

I don't get why manufacturers keep treating their business relations with government as if that's a positive thing that gives them some sort of prestige... The first word that comes to my mind when I learn someone is in business with government is "corruption".

    • @brownells

To understand why that is important to them, you need to understand the history of the company. It's more about the relationship with the actual soldier wearing the gear than anything else.
