🇩🇲 More Dominica Videos: • Trying DOMINICA STREET...
When indentured servants from China arrived in the Caribbean in the 19th century, they brought their cuisine with them, integrating Chinese flavors into a melting pot that also includes Amerindian, Creole, and African influences. Join me as I explore the world of Dominican Chinese food!
RIVERSIDE INTERNATIONAL RESTAURANT & BAR: After watching Chef Steven prepare several dishes in the kitchen, we dove into our incredible Dominican Chinese spread. They brought us potstickers, chow mein, a Szechwan beef bowl, sweet & sour chicken, spring rolls, lobster stir-fry, ginger rum, and fresh passion fruit juice. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful, but the chow mein was definitely one of my favorites!

What a refreshing change, the food looks delicious! The Caribbean is truly a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. Wish you had gotten to taste Lebanese and Syrian food as well. There aren't any Lebanese nor Syrian restaurants, but there are many prominent families who have been living in Dominica probably since the early 1900's. The Chinese have only been in Dominica for the past 20 years or so, and as a matter of fact there were Taiwanese living in Dominica before the Chinese.

Wow this is incredible information. I needed a friend like you Karen to tell me these things! haha. I tried to read about as much history as possible but there were so many different groups, I got about as far as the Kalinago, West Indian, Chinese and then of course French families that are now throughout the island. I didn't get a chance to meet any Lebanese or Syrian but that would have been an incredible story. Next time I visit I'm going to write to you and ask for some guidance hahaha. Thank you Karen!!

David, Dominica is melting pot of people ,try geting the book called "The Dominica story" The history of that island is fascinating. By people's last name you know where the bloodline came from. Antigua, Montserrat, St Kitts , Martinique, Guadeloupe and St Lucia. I never knew my grandmother on my mum's side was St Lucian until she gave me stories of how they came to Dominica (70) years ago.

Thank you for every slurp, nom nom and every appreciative mmmm-mmm, man, look at this. Your bubbelehs raised you & Nate well. Does Dominica export much produce? Does it import many tourists? Why is it so little known? The planet's finest ginger, mangoes and oranges grow in those Moins Trois (French, pr. twah) mountains, drawing in the purest cleanest air, water and soil nutrients thanks to those amazing waterfalls. Farming as it should be.Serious question: How do we get there? Toda! ps I want your jobs.

Morning David: You sure know how to whet my appetite. First of all, I love the restaurant: it's very clean and the kitchen is well organized too. Passion fruit juice: I can see your PASSION for food.😋. My two favorite foods in the world: Chinese and Indian. Simply delicious. All that food reminds me of when I lived in Trinidad. My father, being half Chinese, knew all the restaurant owners in San Fernando and he would take us every Saturday for some of the sweetest Chinese food. Brings back a lot of memories. So happy that Nathan shared the meal with you in this one. I am going to be very biased and say that Trinidad has the best Chinese food in the Caribbean, although I believe it's all Hakka now, but in Toronto, Guyanese Chinese food is the best IMHO. That food in Dominica looks really delicious too. I could go for some now😋. Should have started with the ginger rum and ended with the passion fruit juice. Ginger is good for the stomach and digestion. All in all, this was very nice along with the nuggets of Chinese history in Dominica and the islands. I know that my Indian grandmother was indentured so maybe my father's father was too. Now hearing that the Chinese were indentured as well. Live and learn eh. Anyway, I enjoyed everything: the food, the history, the ambience and Nathan getting to enjoy the meal with you as well. Good job.🇹🇹🇨🇦 BTW, you have given me homework. Will have to check out Chinese in Trinidad history.🤔🤗 I love the new opening. Big difference. Good job.👍

What a lovely comment as per the usual Judy. I'm so glad you enjoyed it and absolutely the Chinese Diaspora is extremely complex and interesting. I've been learning a lot more about some of the migration that took place at that time and learning! That is so interesting your father was half Chinese. I can only imagine some of the delicious treats you got to try. This Chinese food in Dominica is incredible though. I loved it! And wow about your grandmother. I can only imagine her struggle dealing with that indentured servitude reality. Its sad because we see it still all around the world even in the 21st century. I wish it is a scourge we could be rid of once and for all. You definitely must checkout some of the Chinese History in Trinidad as well as throughout the Caribbean. SOOOO fascinating. Thank you as always Judy and wishing you a beautiful weekend.

@@Davidsbeenhere thank you. I do a lot of research but it's too bad that we weren't taught that kind of history in school, so I am learning now. My Chinese grandfather's history is complicated because we didn't know who he was until he died. And my Indian grandmother (my mother's mother), well we knew her after they had let them go: some went back to India and she stayed in Trinidad..so here I am today, learning what I should have known a long time ago. So you see, David, you are doing very important work. Some people watch for the food and entertainment, but I actually watch for everything and learn as I go along. Thank you so much. God bless you and what you do.🙏💕🇹🇹🇨🇦

Fair enough. I love the respectful disagreements etc. Nate lived in NYC for 5 years too and grew up in SF he says: Dumplings/Noodles better in NYC also portions. SF has better Szechuan/Dim Sum/Other Stuff in terms of Chinese Food. I think SF and NYC have very comparable Chinatown's but SF's has a bit more history and the NYC is more integrated into the city as just "another block" and sort of merges into Little Italy. I think SF feels more authentic in that way but NYC Chinatown is more lively etc. That said, you can get incredible Chinese food in both cities and I'd also put Toronto in the Top 3 as well for incredible Chinese. Hope you get to enjoy some delicious Chinese Food either way Kim! Have a great weekend.

David you need to go to St. Vincent and try our foods there and also the vincy Chinese food. And go and visit the vincy and chinese farms there and see how we grew our foods with the most nourishing soil in the entire Caribbean.
Did you also know that St. Vincent grow and provide the best marijuana in the whole world?
And from what i know we grew and provide our product to the pharmaceutical companies here in Canada. Even though Canada grows their own, it doesn't come close to what our nourishing soil produces for the medical needs here in Canada.
Many people sleep and skip our island because it is small. But always remember this, good things come in small packages.
I am not staying all of this because i am from there. We as a vincy culture give every island their crown, we don't take other culture's ideas and call it our own. For example Trinidad makes the best roti, Grenada makes the best oil down, Barbados makes the best coucou and flying fish, vincy makes the best Calalloo soup and Pelau etc. But in vincy all those foods we make them, but we always put our own spin on things. So we don't take away from the island it's from, so we would say vincy made roti, oil down etc.
We also produce the world's best whale oil. And the only island that has black fish. And last we have some of the best cocoa and make our own chocolate and we make the world's strongest rum. Go check us out too since you are touring the Caribbean.
Ps.... Also check out all of our Grenadines islands too. Many top celebrities own places in the Grenadines. Phil Collins, Oprah, Shania twain etc
Oh and Chinese have been migrating on our island for many many years. I recalled as a little girl growing up our school had a school trip for us to go to one of the chinese farms there. And i was so amazed with some of the food they were growing that we as vincentians never plant before. Also some of the fruits i was shocked. And the owners were very nice They asked us if we would like some of the seeds and some of us took and others didn't. But the Chinese have been moving there since the late 60s as I recall. And when they were asked why they chose St. Vincent out of other places and they said they did their research before they made a choice. And when they found out of our volcano and our rich and nourished soil that is why they chose St. Vincent. Some of their relatives had chosen Jamaica and St. Lucia eventually sold their lands and moved to vincy and started more farms there. So there are many generations of chinese in vincy now. And they call themselves vincentians. Because they are born there and carry a vincentian passport and ID.

Yeah but the history of the Chinese in the Caribbean involves a lot of indentured Servitude. Giving the entire context of Chinese Migration to the region requires a broader conversation and history. I never specifically stated that Dominica had indentured Chinese Workers.

Hey Hajar and thank you for the comment. I think it is interesting to see how food around the world are made in their home country and abroad. While they may not be very different that very fact in and of itself is highlighting something important. The story of immigration/migration and the movement of people around the world is part of the story of humanity. Bringing our traditions whether food, art, clothes where we go is a part of being human and showing that indeed even on the Island of Dominica there is a strong Chinese heritage and culture is a worthwhile endeavor. I think a lot of people when thinking about the Chinese don't think about the Caribbean in general and so I've done a bunch of videos showcasing that culture throughout the Caribbean like Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana etc. I also have done it for Indian Food, Latin Food, US Food, and a lot more. I hope that clarifies my reasons and wishing you a peaceful and blessed weekend Hajar THANK YOU!
