Absolutely this. Book binding is one of those skills that can reward you with a serviceable book-shaped object on your first attempt but is a rabbit hole so deep you can lose yourself for years and still only scratch the surface of mastery. If you're the sort of person who indulges in obsessive geekery (that'll be most of us I suspect) then there's a good chance you will love the challenge.

My recommendation: midori MD notebooks. You can easily build a fancy cover to your liking, and replace the book when it’s full, and put it on the shelf. The paper is phenomenal for both pencils and first and foremost for ink, the binding is wonderful and durable. Not sure how easy they are to come by in the US but the paper quality is really outstanding. They come blank or with different variants of grids/lines.

Have the paper experts place you mentioned find the right medium for it and I am sure you have some leather you love lying around the cave. Then you'd have to build a binding jig and press. I am sure it would be a fun project we would all love to watch.

The best sketchbook is the one you'll actually draw in. For Adam that means it has to have erasable pages and be a gift from his mom (L).

My favorite sketchbook is one I got behind the Pantheon in Rome. There's an amazing art shop there with very reasonably priced supply. It is Fabriano Drawing Book. 60 pages, bound traditionally or spiral at the short end, 14.8 x 21cm (it's small so I can stuff it in my purse), 160g/m^3 or 80lb paper. I would love to grab more some day. The binding on the short end allows for your hand not to rest on the bindings at all, no matter the orientation.

  • @mreillydesign

I worked in a print shop for a few years. The paper sounds like a type of vellum. I worked with both very translucent vellum (which is what is typically thought of when people ask for it) and very opaque vellum. One of the biggest benefits I noticed with it is it is smooth and you cleanly erase on it (at least in my experience).
Kelly Paper should have lots of it available (we used them as a paper supplier) and if you can’t get another production of the notebook I suggest a one day build and you make your own notebook (might take a few days because of drying and waiting).
Beeswax, bone, and glue and your ingenuity, you could really make something amazing and teach a relatively simple craft at the same time. In college we made our own books for a class and I even made my first set of leave behind notebooks for job applications. They were fold over notebooks with my resume and portfolio printed on beautiful off-white linen.
Anyways, I really do think it could be a fun build. Good luck with your hunt Mr. Savage!

Do for years I wanted to bind my own book. Strathmore had a paper I loved that I wanted to bind books out of. But then found out they made a hard bound book with the paper. But had a bit more tooth to it. But at the same time found another book Stillman and Birn, and fell in love with there paper. But some book I think you would like and should look in to
    Stillman & Birn Sketchbook
    -Epsilon Series (150 gsm)
    smooth surface
    Strathmore Journal
    -Drawing (130g/m²)
    Medium surface
    -Mixed Media (190g/m²)
    Vellum Surface
You might find them at a local Art store where you could check out the paper quality. I seen the Strathmore in Michaels craft stores. And both are on amazon. Most likely you'll want a surface that is Smooth or Hot pressed. A surface of medium or Vellum will still be ok, but will most likely want to avoid a rough surface and cold press paper.
Also consider a harder lead to prevent transfer. A H or H2 lead might be better to stretch the idea, then touch it up with a HB or B lead to highlight details.

I got one very similar to that, it isn't black and gold but plain leather-bound with the gold on the pages, but same exact dimensions and build, I found one a few years ago in office max for about 35 dollars

Adam, Check out the ' Citrus Book Bindery' they do bespoke journals and sketchbooks. No leather but great choices of cover.
I use their traveller system called Citradori with watercolour inserts and lighter 140gsm dot grids.

Undoublty a fantastic notebook. It's clearly not orignially designed for it. Penny to a pound that it was produced and sold as a guest book. Those usually have thick smooth paper to accomodate all sorts of pens and pencils without bleeding or pushing through. While artists sketchbooks tend to have more of a grainy paper, aimed at grabbing that graphite and other soft tools.
Because I like smearing ink all over everything I too found that most sketchbooks don't have the paper 'for me'. I now buy packs of paper meant for printing on (old fashioned relief printing) and sow my own (quick and dirty) sketchbooks. Finding something like that and sending stock of to a bookbinder would be the more economic choice than trying to get that factory going again. (also more realistic for anyone other than Adam with this issue)

My problem with really nice sketchbooks is that i get too precious with them and i feel unable to sketch because i want whatever ends up on the page to be worthy of its place in the book. This is why i end up using cheap ones instead, i don't feel as beholden onto the book itself and i just draw. That book looks so nice and fancy if i had one i don't think i could ever fill a single page

Well I find 100 lbs to 120 has simular traits. It may have a type of wax coat on the pages to give it that smooth feel does it have a light reflective tent. This may be blank book print pages for ink prints. To help an ink print stand out and hold better.

Stone Paper - Has anyone ever used a stone paper notebook? It's water-resistant, smooth to the touch as it's not made from fibers and it's incredible to write or draw onto. I highly highly recommend stone paper. It's a bit expensive for a notebook but boy is it worth it.

How do you make your sketches? Besides a photographer, I do not consider myself an artist or even a good doodler. I have a hard time trying to more or less accurately draw a representation of three dimensional objects on paper using a pencil. What tips do you have, or I would also love to see close up shots of you drawing/sketching while you are talking out your thoughts.
I shy away from drawing pictures of what I want to build, however I know it would make me a better maker if I did. I just get overwhelmed. Haha. Thank you for inspiring me. :)

That's a super interesting sketch book! I don't really sketch out my projects per se; either I have the idea in my head and go from there (did that on a simple project to spruce up a cute Galaxy's Edge droid), or I get very into detail about project specifics by laying it out in a drawing program (did this to finalize my design/ color concept for a modern Mandalorian kit; hopefully I can get it done and approved by MMCC before next Halloween). I think I did create a few one-off drawings in a spiral notebook, and yeah, those are a pain. The pages can also begin to come off of the spiral part if you handle them too roughly. It would be fantastic to figure out what kind of paper that is, because the only downside to sketching for me is the erasing issue.

Question: Did you find out the paper type? Adam, PLEASE do ask the paper shop about the paper. As an artist it intrigues me that the pencil lines do not ghost when erased. It’d benefit all of us creative types. Thank you!

Quality paper has a larger amount of wood pulp in it. Recycled paper doesn't. You can see it if you put the sheet up against the light. You will notice that it is pulpy if it is good paper.

If they won't produce/reproduce it for you, maybe it's an opportunity to partner with another maker to bring something similar to market under the "Savage Industries" line of goods. I'd buy one ... or many because I definitely like a good sketchbook for notetaking and suspect many others would as well.
