- Ubiquiti makes a lot of great options when it comes to their routers. However, if you are new to Unifi, it can be a bit overwhelming to figure out which router will work best for you. This video is going to cover 4 of their very popular options and talk about the pros and the cons so you can figure out which one will work best for you. The routers we are going to talk about are the Unifi Express, Unifi Dream Router, Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra and the UDM Pro / UDM SE.

I think it has been like a little more than 3 years since I purchased my UniFi equipment and there may be only one change that I would make, if I was purchasing the system today.
Current Equipment:
- UDM-Pro
- 24 Port Patch Panel (For the UDM-Pro network cables)

Internet connection: 500mbps (Well over what we need) Since 6:30AM this morning we have only had 16.2GB of Internet traffic
Performance wise: Not a single issue regarding latency cameras or anything, except for a some self imposed dumb moves by me every now and then.
Security: All outside CAT 6 connections are MAC filtered. Working on other Firewall rules as we speak.
The only change in what I would have ordered today, would be the 48 port switch instead of the 24 port switch. I did not realize that I was going to have all these cameras to surround the house. This UniFi network is actually "FUN" and a great learning experience. You cannot go wrong with a setup like this.
Dude. Thats awesome. Sounds like you have a great setup there. It can be difficult to plan for growth like that so don’t be too hard on yourself. Are you utilizing the SFP+ DAC cable from your UDM to your 24 Pro switch?

Thanks for a well put together summary! I ended up getting the Gateway Ultra over replacing the UDM Pro, ours failed to fully reboot after a thunderstorm last night. Won't even go into recovery mode, and unfortunately it is out of warranty. We just didn't use all those extra features.
I think the Gateway Ultra will be a nice little router for alot of people... I hope you end up being happy with it.

Nice Video. Unifi products are absolutely amazing. Im currently using the UDM Pro. But it is total overkill for what I need. So I will be switching to the new cloud Gateway Ultra which is perfect for my current needs.

@@ethernetblueprint I totally agree. In many instances that would be true. For me specific, it would not be as I dont intend expanding my network and usage any more than I have now. You can only have some many devices lol.
I'm currently switching from my all-in-one device provded by my ISP to Ubiquiti. Since I can't buy all needed devices at once, I do it over time. Started with the U6 Pro AP. My Unifi Controller currently runs in a docker container on a Raspberry Pi.
That’s not a bad way to go. I’ve never been a fan of ISP routers so I think that is a great move. Let me know if you have questions
One device missing from your review is the Dream Machine (UDM). While a bit dated, and only including WiFi 5, it still offers home users some of the capabilities of the UDM series devices at a reasonable price point considering the built in access point. It supports 1G throughput with IDS/IPS. It’s still available from the Ubiquiti store if you search for UDM … and is priced at $299.

The UDM SE is also great for powering up Ubiquiti Talk VoIP phones.
I have a rack in my home office and I use an UDM SE with an Enterprise 24 PoE switch. I'm running my four access points on this Enterprise switch, and not the SE. I power my Talk phones from the SE.

great video just what I was looking for. I have been trying to buy a dream router for two years now. don't think they will ever come back. I has every thing I want for a small home network.

Great Videos. I only just found your channel and I'm impressed as I love the way you explain things. Anyway, I would love to get your take on which router to replace a Unifi USG. I have an existing Unifi system with a USG, a cloud key, 3 AP Pro Access Points, a 8 port 60w POE switch, and an 8 port 150w POE switch. I've been thinking about upgrading but don't really see the point of changing switches and access points as they work great as they are. Also, I do have a 12 camera Lorex system, but also have one Protect camera (it was an experiment), but I want to keep the protect camera. As for other gear that uses all those ports, I have a Harmony Hub, a Vera Hub, and a Sonos as well. On the wifi side I have Ring and Ecobee devices. So back to the router, my first thought was the ultra, but it cant run the protect software, but I already have a cloud key for that. When I think about the UDM pro I'm not sure it's worth the extra money as I already have the 2 switches (16 ports total) and don't need any more ports. Is there something I'm missing by just going with the ultra? Appreciate any insight you have on this.
I hear what you are saying. In my old business, we used that same setup for many years for lots of clients. (other than the cloud key. We had a cloud service as our controller) It worked great. My question back to you is: Is there something particular that you hope to get by upgrading?
I'm about to setup multiple VLANs to keep everything segregated and improve security. Although I know I can set up the vlans on the USG, I'm under the impression that the Ultra has improved security. So security is my primary reason. I only have 300 mbps service and that is more than sufficient, so it's not a speed issue for me.
I think you will like the newer Ultra. It should be a decent upgrade for you..
My setup is similar, if a little smaller in scope. Ubiquiti has not upated the USG in forever, and my cloud key is EOL. I would get the UDM if it would fit in my panel. The Ultra is a great option, an extra AP like with the UDR or Express would be superflous in my setup, plus full 1G IDS would be great. But you can't get the Ultra, and I never know when things will be back in stock with Ubiquiti.

What if I'm looking to setup 4 ubiquity AP, and 4 cameras, what would I be needing?
Depending on the APs you choose, you could probably make all that work with just a UDM SE... (just have to watch out for the POE vs POE+ ports (only 2 POE+ Ports are included on the SE and many new Wifi6 APs use POE+)... but I would look that direction... based on that data...
Nice overview! I bought the DM SE recently and hope to use it for the next 10-15 years at least. Btw, how long do you think Ubiquiti will support it with software updates?
It’s a good question. That’s always difficult to gauge with any brand. I would hope to be able to get 10 years or more out of them.

It's more of a rule out and see which you have left , I don't need cameras because I'm using frigate for that ( but do need poe switches ), the express is a rule out because of the 4 device limit , the dream machine pro is just too big to be placed mixed to my modem , so it is down to the dream machine , the Cloud Gateway Ultra OR forget about routing and get the Cloud Key Gen 2+ .

With running a server 24/7 I'm going to be running the Ubiquiti docker network client and get my switches and APs for it .
So just looking which switches and APs to get , need 1 x 8 port poe for the cameras and a few non poe for the rest , looking the laptops I do have wifi 6 ax200 160 mhz which should be multi-gig .
Do Ubiquiti do a 5 or 10 gbe 8 port switch which will not break the bank ?

Sounds like a nice setup. They offer a 4 port 10Gb switch for $300, but it looks like you would need a couple of them... They also have an enterprise 8 Port switch that has 2 10Gb ports and 8 2.5Gb ports on it for $479... Maybe take a peek at those...??

Would like to have a controller running 24/7 instead of using docker. so either Cloud Key Gen2+ (around 200 bucks), Cloud Gateway ultra (130) or due Dream Router (250). Advantage of DR would be the additional AC. the UCG-KG2+ would have security and HD but seems to be rather old. So i am not sure whether I will enjoy it for a long time. CGU seems to be very resonably priced and fit my prupose (no cameras yet). What do you think?
I don't think i can put my ISP's router into bridge mode. Does that have to impact my decision?
Sorry for the delay on this question. First off, no bridge mode won't stop any decision, but you will have a double fw, so if you need to create access from the outside world, you would need to open up the ports in both routers... I just got my hands on the CGU and am hoping to do some videos on it. I honestly am expecting good things and think it is a great option for anyone who doesn't have cameras in the mix. So yes, I think you would be happy with that - IMO

So wither Express or Ultra I do not need to buy CloudKey or make mine own with a pi?
You would not need a cloudkey to manage your network. The Express and the Ultra would take care of that. If you are planning on having cameras, then you may need additional equipment to run the Unifi Protect app.
I know your intro said review of devices with only built-in controllers, but in my situation of having a Cloud Key Gen 2+, my upgrade path was to replace my USG with a UXG. This system will do all of the Unifi applications. I am using network, protect and voice. I kinda wish I had bought the UDM Pro when it was on sale $(279).
You have a great setup too. I like the new UXG Lite too. Great upgrade from the USG.

I don't use dual WAN so the UXG lite works for me. Down the road I'll look at the UDM Pro or whatever Ubiquiti has like it at that time.
I think I could connect my Lorex system to the SE. I won't do this for some time but I am thinking through what I want to do and how to do it. I have Xfinity Gig with XB8 and waiting on a local company to install fiber in my neighborhood. The SE and one Access point to get up and running then expand if I want later.
You can connect any outside camera system to a Unifi network... Typically the cameras on those system need to plug directly into their own NVR though... You would just need to connect the NVR to one of the switchports and you'd be business.

I hope that Unifi doesn't get rid of the Edge gear. I have also used them in the past and they do work great. I haven't heard much about their future though.

Currently I have a Peplink Balance 20 router which may become a bottleneck (and its old) as my Starlink increases its speeds. I don’t need/use the fall over so 2 WANs are not in my future. I have two UniFi APs in the house and two more in outer buildings. All my switches are 1 Gb Netgear and cabling is all Cat5e. It seems as if the $129 router would be OK for me (no cameras anticipated). Does that make sense?
That is the route that I would go. That gateway Ultra is a nice little box.

Great video. Would love to see one on the udm pro and protect. I’ve been thinking of adding some cameras to my pro. Lastly, the Unifi express HUGE downfall imo is the fact that you can’t effectively set it up with a vpn client. I had a simple use case at my parents home to run a couple firesticks through a vpn client instead of having the client on the sticks themselves. The throughput on the Unifi express configured with a vpn client like Nordvpn was like 8-9 meg on a 500 meg connection. It was 175meg when the client was loaded on the sticks. Support at Ubiquity said this is expected behavior. In the end the thing just doesn’t have the horsepower. I switched over to the cloud ultra gateway and it does it perfectly. Just an FYI

What is your take on the cloud gateway max? I am in the middle of a renovation and will be installing a centralized server/network setup in the basement. I am deciding between dream machine pro/se and the cloud gateway max. I will have 3-4 cameras, 2-3 WAPs and 5-8 additional ethernet ports
I love it for a home. Powerful, versitile and can do storage for Unifi Protect. Great unit. I wish it was an option when I created that video. I haven't gotten to play with one yet, but from what I have seen, it will run what you listed there just fine...Even with faster than 1 Gig internet. I plan on doing a video on it soon, but need to buy one first.
This was a great comparison and I found it very helpful. The one thing that I wasn't sure about was the differences of the Network app on the different platforms. For example, is the way port forwarding gets done the same on the Express compared to the UDM Pro? Is there a difference in the number of rules the two different platforms will support? So essentially, how would I know the limitations of the features from one device to the other so I can make the right choice?
Good question and the answer is no - when it comes to setting up your rules. The network platform is the same in each device. Port forwarding is done the same, FW rules is the same. There are limitations between the devices (like how many network filtering categories are available) because the hardware can’t support it, but the interface and how you do everything is the same.
Thank you for the Great comparison video!! Question on UDR, can it run its built-in WiFI and its IPS & IDS while also connected and run as controller to 2 U7/U6 APs simultaneously? if it does, that would be a perfect setup for having WiFi coverage for 3000 or more sqft home
Almost... It can do everything you mentioned except power the APs. U6/U7 APs require POE+ power and this device only has POE which is designed for cameras. But you could hang a small, affordable Unifi switch off of it and achieve what you are looking for. The USW-Ultra 42W Switch or the USW-Lite-8 have enough ports and power and are under $130 bucks. Also, when you have IPS/IDS turned on, the UDR max throughput is around 700Mb so you lose some performance.
@@ethernetblueprint Dang it. I was hoping to avoid having another box in the setup. Thanks for pointing out about PoE+ requirement for the AP. does it need to use Ubuiquity PoE+ switch specifically to power U6/U7 APs or we can use other vendor PoE+ switches ?
Any brand of POE+ switch will work, however, if you plan to do VLANs, it would take a managed POE+ switch and you would need to set up the VLANs in the 3rd party switch too. If you just plan on doing a flat network and have just 1 subnet, then you can use any POE+ switch you like.
Amazing video thanks Tim - I've subscribed! Questions... I currently run a Cloud key Gen 2+, with 2 cameras on Protect, and 5 APs on the Network app., and the ISP supplied router controlling DHCP connected to my 1 gig fibre connection. I would like to ditch the ISP router. I wondered about the UXG lite but it only has 1 LAN, and I find it useful to have some LAN ports spare even though I have a 24 port switch. Also the internal specs of the Cloud Key Ultra seem a bit better than the UXG-lite. Would you suggest I go for the Cloud Key Ultra or the UXG-lite? If I went for the Ultra - could I still use the CK Gen 2+ to run protect, and would it be happy to sit in the ecosystem controlled by the Ultra? Also - I was a bit uncertain how I can set up the Ultra or the UXG-lite to take over duties from my ISP router and inherit all my current Network settings from the Cloud key Gen 2+?
Thanks for the add. In all honesty, I think either would be a good option for you. Even though this video didn't cover the UXG Lite, I have some in the field and really like them. While I have my devices connected to a cloud controller, you could very easily adopt yours using your CloudKey and replace your ISP router. Like the Ultra, they do come with IPS, but the UXG Lite only has 11 of the 35 security categories. The Ultra has all of them. I think they would be the same performance wise though. If you choose the ultra, you would have it be your network controller and your cloud key would continue to run protect for you cameras. I currently have my home network running on a USG Pro and my cameras on a cloud key just like what youre describing so I know it works. IMO, it really depends on your needs and wants.
As far as your second question goes, is your ISP router also your modem or is it only a router?
@@ethernetblueprint very helpful. My ISP box connects via Ethernet to a fibre ONT box and uses PPPoE, username and password and VLAN ID 10 to authenticate. I think that means it is a router?
(sorry for the delay) Most likely it is a router. If it hands out private IP addresses to anything behind it (ie. 192.168.1.X or similar), then it is acting as a router.

Right? Hopefully Unifi gets a replacement for the Dream router soon. That is a nice device like the UDM Pro that offers WiFi. My guess is that they are working on a newer version of it. Maybe with WiFi 7

I am on the verge of making the move. I have gigabit service now and Spectrum is supposed to be bringing multi-gig and symmetric service. That will be my time to move up. From what I can see the UXG Max could work, but I'll need a cloud key, so for $100 more I can get the Dream Machine SE. I need about 16 ports, so I will add the Switch Pro Max 24 and two U7 Pro APs. Under $1400 to replace my Asus mesh (5e and 6 routers). I cannot get full bandwidth of my gigabit service even with the "gaming" routers. It is a lot to pay, but I should be set for quite a while with that setup.
I like that setup and I think you will too. Just so you know, with only 4 Unifi devices like that, (UXG Max, Pro Max Switch, 2 APs), you could get a free cloud hosted controller from my friends over at Unihosted. They allow you to manage up to 5 devices for free and it would save you that extra $100. Plus they offer support if you have issues... For the no camera devices could I expand the network via a UniFi switch to pick up the cameras?
Yes, the cameras would power on with your switch, but they need a device that can run the protect app to function. So, you would need a device like a cloud key gen2+ which has a hard drive and runs that app.
Hi, Did you update the UniFi OS or the UniFi Network Application? There are some people complaining about slowness after this update. Mainly for Unifi Express. Did you experience this?

Great video! Question, on the UniFi Ultra - I assume you just connect a UNifi NVR and just adopt all cameras from there,right? Is that an option?
You would adopt the NVR into the ultra as a device, yes. However, you’ll add the cameras from the protect app that is running on the NVR.
Yeh I was wondering the same thing, but I would also need access points for Wi-Fi and by the time you add up all that I wonder if it's better to go with the udm pro or udm dream router? I would only need four or five cameras. Max
If you are doing a combo of cameras and APs, I think a nice switch added the ultra would be a good way to go. Make sure to keep an eye on the power limitations of the UDM SE and the UDR if you want an all in one solution. Just my 2 cents

I should mention we have a fairly new house that I had ethernet run to each room. Including a couple extra to both TV rooms.
Unfortunately, I didn't think about running ethernet for cameras or doorbell, so those will have to be Wi-Fi.
Would prefer some access points that would look ok sitting on a shelf or mantle
Hi Jason. I am sorry for the delay on this. You may have found your solution, but I figured I would still weigh in a little. I just reready my reponse to you and even confused myself. I am so sorry about that. The Ultra will not run cameras. I honestly think for the setup of 5 cameras and 2-3 access points, your best bet would be to get a Unifi SE router/gateway which will run the network app and protect and has 6 POE and 2 POE+ ports on it.... If you needed additional ports, you could expand by getting a small Unifi POE switch. The new Ultra switch is a nice option at a reasonable price.
Again, I am sorry for any confusion with my response. It almost looks like I was doing talk to text or something. I hope I didn't steer you the wrong way.
I have some home network jobs I'm putting together and I would've loved to use the express but that 4 device limit is just too big of a limitation for me to ever use it in an install. It's common for me to put in 2 small PoE switches and 3 AP's. 6 or 8 device limitation would have made this a much more compelling option.

Yes, you can.
I like the Ultra because I don't really need the cameras support, but I really wish it had SFP+ WAN/LAN, first to connect it directly to the WAN fiber and second to be future proof
Yes... I agree, that would be nice. But it would knock it out of that super low price point. They will probably come out with something that has that. I'm sure you are not alone.

Does the udm pro work as a modem as well? Do any of these other devices work as modems?
No, The UDM is not a modem/router combo... Unifi does have a modem they sell though. Its very new.

It doesn’t do POE. You’ll need a switch that does or to use power injectors.

- I would add abit higher resolution images ( to prevent the blurring effect )
- Images can abit smaller as well ( the device images feels over scaled which makes it feels off, almost filling 50% of the view )
- The words are abit too big tin the screen which makes it harder to read

I would like to update my network but money is the facter I think on buying the udm pro or the se but I have 3 1 gigabit 24 port switches all ready on my network do I need to update the switch right away or can I us what I have with the new router
You can use ANY switch with ANY Unifi router, so you can use your current switches with the UDM Pro/SE... However, if the switches are not managed switches and can't do VLANs, then they will be limited on which networks will work on them... If you just plan on having a flat network with no VLANs, then this setup will be just fine... You can introduce Unifi Switches down the line when the time is right for you to extend your featureset. Hello. I’m having fiber upgrading coming weeks and I wonder if the UDM Pro or SE ports support more than a gib. Thank you.
Both support up to 10Gb WAN when using a 10Gb SFP+ Adapter. (Fiber or Ethernet) options available. On the UDM Pro, the WAN Ethernet port is 1Gb, but the SE has a 2.5Gb built in ethernet port... so it depends on how fast you need to go...

If this is the case then then 8 ethernet POE ports would be 1Gb ports and if I connect the U6 Pro through that port, my U6 Wi-Fi would be limit at 1Gb max. Yes, you would max out at a gig to the APs. It wouldn't bottleneck persay, it allows more of your devices to connect at a faster speed at the same time... Most of the time, wireless speeds rarely get close to 1Gb so I don't think you will be bottlenecked.

If you have network and protect already running from a cloud key plus and a 3rd party router then what happens if you swap to a UDM? Do you somehow migrate from the key to the UDM? Also the new cloud gateway max device is amazingly featured for home and maybe changes this video conclusions (all the apps, 2.5g and storage) thanks

When I created this video, the protect cloud archiving wasn’t available from UniFi so if you want to keep your camera recordings, you may need to look into that some.

Hi, Why UXG PRO is not an option to be compared with UDM series?
This video only highlighted gateways that have a built in Unifi controller. The UXG and UXG Pro didn't qualify since they need an external controller of some kind.
My friend who works in IT is designing my network and security system. We are doing this in stages to defer the cost. I just bought the UDM-SE and U6+ access point for my wifi. I was wondering if you think one access point is enough for my 2200 square foot house plus another 100 or square feet for the garage? He thinks 1 access point is enough. What do you think?
You may be ok with an open floor plan but if it were me, I’d map it out and use Unifis free design center tool. If that’s not possible, then I’d say run lines for a couple APs and start with one to see how it goes but have the infrastructure there for extras just in case. does the cloud gateway ultra have POE+ power to power the wifi 6e or wifi 7 access points?? I am wanting to get away from the standard routers that the average person uses as they are ok but we use our internet fairly heavily so I am looking for a more robust system. I'm not sure how any of this stuff works overall so figured I would try and ask. Thank you for the information in this video though as it is helpful overall! :)

The cloud gateway Ultra does not have POE... you would need to add a switch for that. Have you seen my new series that I just published on here? It is called Unifi for Newbies and there are 6 videos all geared for the new Unifi fan...

@ethernetblueprint probably only need 1 ap as i currently live in an apartment. Im thinking i may just go with the cloud gateway max, with the switch ultra (60W) and the U7 pro AP to get started. I have the urd right now. Bare right now and at best I get between 500-600 megs. When I record 2 cameras to it, it drops to 300. So it struggles to do fancy things.
I do see this router as more of an entry level router so overhead is going to affect the overall performance. I appreciate you commenting and letting the viewers know your experience.
I would have appreciated a better explanation for why the dream wall was not in consideration; it seems suitable for apartments or offices where a rack for the Pro or SE is not feasible.
I have heard this complaint before. I may have to give it it's own video. I don't know that I would put one in an apt. They are have a pretty specific use case IMO. Appreciate the feedback. I will have to give the Dream wall the spotlight it is due!
Question not in unifi ecosystem as yet, could you buy a dream machine pro then two expresses and connect one express to dream machine and then mesh the second express?
I think so but I’ll have to test this. I have the parts to do so I will test that this weekend and let you know. :)
I set this up in my lab and it worked just fine. Both Expresses were adopted into the UDM Pro (controller) and are acting like APs. One was physically connected and the other connected wirelessly. Cheers!

I need your guidance because I am new to UniFi network. I need only Network and I do not need any other apps. I have a 1Gb connection. I am considering either a Dream Router or a Cloud Gateway Ultra with U6 Mesh WiFi device. The Dream Router is not available, and it seems that the Cloud Gateway Ultra with U6 Mesh WiFi device would be a more powerful solution. What do you think would suit me better? Should I wait for a Dream Router to be in stock again or should I go for the Cloud Gateway Ultra with U6 Mesh WiFi device? Please advise.
Well, the good news is is that I don’t think you could go wrong with either solution. However, with the dream router out of stock for so long, my hunch is that UniFi is working on a replacement product. They never really do a very good job of letting the public know what they’re up to. If your timeline is more immediate, I would definitely lean towards the ultra and the U6 mesh. If time is on your side, you could wait it out a little bit and see what unifi is working on. I wish I had more insight than that. However, both are very good options for you.

Unifi gateways will do static routes... I don't think it does any bridging though... What exactly would you be wanting to do with that feature? Maybe it does, but I'm just not undestanding what you are looking to do there?

True... especially the new stuff. Make sure you check the "alert me when in stock" checkbox on the Unifi Store site. You have to be logged in to see it.

Well, I have buy all the equipment I test. Unifi doesn't just send them to me... yet (Unifi, if you are listening, the public would like me to test your other devices... LOL) So that means I take this on a case by case basis. Now, that being said, the UXG Max does not have a built in controller so it wouldn't have been part of this video. I will add it to my list of devices to try and get my hands on.

I’m gonna get the Ultra when it’s available, but the 2.5 Gb WAN is confusing because it only has 1Gb LAN ports. Where are you gonna push the extra 1.5 Gbps 😢

@@ethernetblueprint they have confirmed on the release forums that the backplane is limited to 1G, the only "client" that gets to enjoy that 2.5G WAN is the UCG itself, for faster update downloads or vpn or whatever. not a compelling reason to upgrade your internet speed to over 1G with this device tbh.
If the Ultra supports LACP, you can match the WAN’s 2.5Gb on the LAN by creating a LAG (aggregate 2-3 1Gb ports).
@@ethernetblueprintthis device has a 1gig backplane. So no spreading 2.5 gig over multiple ports, only 1 gig max. The 2.5 port is completely pointless and should be considered a 1 gig port! They even said so themselves on the forum. The only thing that can benefit from 2.5 gig speed would be this device updating its own firmware!
I do love my UDM Pro/SE. BUT, for the money, I wish that out of the 150 countries that can be blocked. The UDMPro/SE only blocks 140 countries. Granted, I'm not to worried about being hacked by the Vatican. But you should be able to block every nation (except your home nation) on the globe.
Do the UDMPro's have a life expectation ? This one has been running over 4 years now. Should I keep a backup device in case of a issue popping up?

I hear you on the country blocking. That isn't the first time I have heard that. It is difficult to know on the longevity. From a support standpoint, I think it is fair to say you should get between 5-7 years out of a device like that. I realize that is quite a range, but this is a seen as a business grade device and that is a typical life expectancy for that type of device. You could get longer...
The reason i originally liked unifi is that it wasnt an all in one . Since then unifi has gone the all in one route for many devices like the dream machines which means when one breaks it all breaks . As you can imagine i went the ucg ultra route i dont have cameras but if i do I'll go nvr too. I dont need one but id Like to see a device that allows redundancy and a 10gb backbone without having all the other apps available multi use devices always introduce a compromise imo whether that's sharing a back plane or the compute being shared over numerous applications, compromise on cooling as so much is rammed in , or just paying for things you don't need etc.
True... but they still have their UXG series too for gateways... those play more of a singular role in your network... not quite like the edge series did but still more like you are describing...
big con of UDM/SE is it has "noisy" fan(s), so not recommended for casual living room or office/library, without dedicated machine room with a rack
That is a good call out. I have heard that from other users as well. My UDM Pro is pretty quiet though...
I have the UDM but it keeps cutting off and restoring a few times each day. So frustrating.
Yikes... I have heard of a few issues with the UDM line here and there. There were especially buggy in the early days... but I haven't had that happen. Sorry for your troubles.
The UDM Pro/SE biggest problem is that they are really too big for home use type structured wiring panels. Even if you have a big panel like I do that's 42", you're basically taking up half the space with a UDM Pro/SE. I have other non-Ubiquiti things in my panel, so it would really take some finagling to get it to fit in there with everthing else. Mounting it outside the panel, or getting a freestanding rack, are not spouse-acceptable in my house/relationship.
The Gateway Ultra is really the ultimate replacement for us OG Ubitquiti folks who started with a Cloud Key, a USG-3P, a switch and 2-3 APs, which describes my setup. Only problem is, you can't get them right now. And that's so typical for Ubiquiti.
I really want the IDS/IPS at something approaching a decent rate, 1Gbit would be fine. I'm stuck at network 7.2.97 right now so I have to decide how much longer that is going to be acceptable. Maybe I'll just get an Express, turn off the WiFi and get a separate security device like a pfsense box.
I hear you on the network cavity things that builders install. I usually recommend having that removed and replaced with a rack of some kind. They just aren’t practical IMO. Bummer on the non-spouse approval.
Seems like a good call on the Gateway Ultra. They are hard to get right now. Make sure you have the “notify when back in stock” checkbox checked. That’s how I got mine. I’m sure you can get one. Hang in there. You’ll like it better than the express.
If the Dream wall had at least one 3.5" hard drive bay then it would have been a great product, but without that I have very little interest in it.. So yeah I agree it is a very niche product.
I do find it funny that isn't included... especially for the price point and the over all size of the product...

Would the express make a good travel router?
What are you looking for in a travel router? I only ask because a lot of people look for different things when it comes to that. I can say that it will require a physical WAN connection wherever you travel to. It can't connect via Wi-Fi. If you want a security device that can connect via Wi-Fi, I typically recommend the Firewalla Purple for a travel router.
Naming should be fixed:
UDR-> UDM-6 or U6-DM based of the previous UDM Base model.
Cloud Gateway Ultra-> UDR since is just a router.
Unifi Express-> this can be in the ultra line up but preferably the ultra lineup should be named Xpress to don’t give fake ultra expectations.

I had to fire one of mine up to verify, but yes, it can do a static IP on the WAN, +PPPoE and assigning a VLAN... same as other Unifi devices...
I'm still confused after watching the video. I want to run 3 PoE exterior cameras, one doorbell and maybe an interior camera. Is there something that is suitable for that or I need to get the NVR?

Since 3.2.7 software UDR can run 3 apps simultaneously. UDR has 128GB SSD built in for recordings. In case of gateway ultra lack of WiFi is not a minus for me . In many cases gateway is not placed in right location, I do not want to pay for features I do not use. 2.5G is a gimmick as device has 1G backbone, so clients cannot access this 2.5G, as a joke - console can download updates or test Internet speed, but cannot forward this rate.
I had forgot the UDR had gotten that extended capability with 3.2.7. Thanks for sharing that oversight. And, yes that’s a good call out for the 2.5G. Again something most homes don’t need for a nice setup.

Yes, if change routers and you setup the new router with the same wifi name and password (both have to match perfectly), then your devices should just reconnect automatically. I guess I will have to work on my hand guestures... appreciate the feedback.

They don't to my knowledge make UniFi routers. Only firewalls. Never understood that. I really liked their Edge Router series.
Well, I think UniFi considers the as Gateways which function similarly to a router. I used an Edge Router4 for many years. I really liked them too.

the biggest downside on all the modern Models is that they have no shielded Ethernet ports and thus do not properly earth shielded Ethernet cables, which means that a Ethernet Patch Panel is needed even in my little Cabin. Because i here in Germany have only shielded Ethernet Cables and as our Country is so dense populated i will never have or use unshielded Ethernet Cables. But shielded Ethernet Cables are worse than unshielded Cables if the shield is not properly earthed. So in conclusion this new Product Series is nothing for me which i am willing to pick up and so i will simply skip them all in hope for some better devices in the future.

Please just don’t start doing sexy female thumbnails because people will click on them for a different reason. I do think regular females in the thumbnails helps normalizes that image which is good.
