  • Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr is an imperfect game that gets just as many things wrong as it gets right, but on balance, I really enjoyed my time with it, and I really respect what Neocore have done here.

For anyone coming to this review in 2019(if you can find this buried comment) they dropped their huge 2.0 update for the game that fixes basically every single problem brought up in the video. The game is much faster now by a lot. Still slower than Diablo, but it's no longer feels like everything is playing at half speed. They've overhauled basically the entire loot system similar to loot 2.0 in Diablo 3. They've raised the level cap and improved the leveling experience. There are a lot of other changes too. All the positives in this video are still there and everything else has been massively improved. They've also released an expansion on PC, but it isn't on console yet as of 10/20/19 but it adds a new class and different ways to gear up at endgame.

I'm stunned with the review. Seriously. I found out about this game last week and didn't find any useful video or review. I like how you compare many aspects of the game to different games. I played (still play from season to season) Diablo III, and the comparisons really worked for me. It's very useful to have something I've played to compare to games I didn't play. And the way you tackled each topic separately and at the same time the transition between them was natural. The timecodes on the description were really good. I'm definately going to subscribe.

Great review. Convinced me to buy it, as it's on sale right now, and I love both ARPGs and W40K, but I always thought Diablo 3 was a little _too much_ of everything. Trillions of damage in split seconds, extremely fast paced, almost no tactics involved in endgame, it's all just about speed and efficiency. So seeing 3 to 4 digit damage numbers pop up and the decelarated combat pace really appealed to me.
Thanks for this great review, very well done!

  • @Robinson_Crusoe

The problem with a high speed massacre in this case is the lore unfriendly aspect of it. An inquisitor who just melts through squads of chaos space marines and demons is not a 40k thing. I think history has proven that you apsolutely need to make 40k games feel like 40k, and nothing else. Because the main audience are 40k fans. DoW 3 for example.
Martyr isn't perfect, but i'm glad they didn't compromise here.

I played Dawn of War Dark Crusade and DOW 2 Retribution, not knowing much of the lore. Had fun in both of them. In the latter, Inquisitor Adrastia can stun Chaos Space Marines and Lord Commisar Bern can beat a marine to a pulp with a power fist.
      On Hard difficulty.

I gotta say, thanks for making this review. When I started getting into 40k recently (largely thanks to the TTS series) I was looking for a game to accompany that budding fandom.
Most of your points hold up, but I've personally found some exceptions. It's entirely possible that some of these things were added after you published it, but in the current state of the game as I've stepped into it:
    - the pace: turns out you don't have to be slow at all, there's an entire Movement skill tree that makes you MUCH faster and shortens cooldowns by a huge amount
    - the "slow" and deliberate pace of the attacks and animations, enemies included, are at just the right speed to allow for responsive countermeasures, such as blocking at the right time with shields (blocking is timing-based, not held like in other games, making it more of a skill-based evasion), halting a large attack's windup with a cc or aimed shot to the appropriate limb from the rifles, etc
    - these pace choices and making speed something to actually deliberately spec into make for a very satisfying dynamic, turning it into a conscious tool rather than some inescapable bog-standard, picked out from many
Overall it's really struck a chord with me, because everywhere I look in it I find myself going, "Yeah, this is what I would have liked to see, were I in a position to make design calls on something like Diablo."

I love Warhammer 40k so this game is awesome for me. I read the Inquisitor novels by Dan Abnett and all that. Collect the game books just to read through them and enjoy the art. I do agree about the combat not feeling as good as Diablo. But all the other stuff is so much more than D3 could ever be, to me anyway.
As far as the co-op/solo thing, I don't mind. I'm an old dude and I don't have friends who play. I kind of missed that generational thing of having friends to play with on line. I'm a little bitter about that, but love me some solo-friendly games that give the option to play with others.

Based on most pre-release developer interviews, it sounds like this game was designed first & foremost as a homage to the rich Warhammer universe. That being said, based on your somewhat minor qualms, it appears that the development team have largely succeeded in their endeavor. It boils down to this: If you are a fan of ARPG's, this game is worth a shot. If you are a fan of Warhammer 30-40K, this game is worth a shot from the crimson muzzle of a steaming "Bolter." Nice review. Can't wait to pick this game up. For the Emperor!

Then it was a stupid decision. ARPG's are coop games. The best in the genre all allow you to play with friends for all of their content the minute you start playing.
The fact you can't have a buddy join you for a 25 h story line I'd say is an epic design failure on the devs part. Whatever benefits they think they gained from cutting campaign multiplayer wasn't worth it.

WHAT IS THIS CRAP! Less than a 20min review?! Also no obscure metaphor about a grand human achievement or how the Mayans had a mastery of the stars unlike any other civilization of its period and somehow translating that into a video game. This is the "Curse of Osiris" you game reviews really phoned it in.

I jussssst got into these Warhammer games with ChaosBane.. even bought that one twice .. for the pro and then PS5.. clearly I’m a top down dungeon crawler rpg fan “Diablo” Nope.. Warhammer is no Diablo .. nor has the Budget.. but it’s getting pretty damn close .. I think for what these games are .. we’ve been so spoiled with AAA BIG BUDGET .. tons of coverage .. vs smaller games like this with a Niche audience .. I’m glad I jumped into this world :) def have become a Warhammer fan now.. my only Moan is I was charged 59.99 at a retail store for the physical.. Older game folks lol..

For those that are a bit miffed about cover. Cover is a throwback to just about every warhammer 40k game, including the board game versions.. since the beginning of all time. It is a bit clunky in this game, but as a huge warhammer fan, I was really glad it was in. It almost wouldnt feel like a warhammer 40k game without a cover system.

I waited to buy this game. hoping you would review it, and you did!
I'm glad i did wait, but when you describe how much slower paced it is, compared to PoE and D3, it's a turnoff for me, seeing as i very recently got into PoE, and the speed of some builds is what sells it to me.
Which in turn makes it hard to even consider Martyr as a viable game at this time.
Thank you for doing these reviews.

As a lifelong 40k fan, I pulled the trigger on this one at the w/e even though I never buy pre-release games, especially at this price point. It's very good. Has some ways to go to be great, but the devs are definitely putting in the work. It plays very differently to D3 and the slower pace is one I find welcome. It feels like DoW2 re-imagined as an ARPG. In that regard, I hope we get some squad mechanics later down the line, as being able to lead a gaggle of guardsmen in a multiplayer warzone would be a blast.
    Thanks fro the review!

They added the Cover systeme because its something that always existed in the tabletop game, when units/models are in covers, they have more chances to survive incoming ennemy fire, so it always was an important piece of the game.

I played about 37 hrs (Lvl 20) so far and i love it. The 40k atmosphere is amazing. My only two issues so far are: Lag in coop and too few armor designs (NPCs look much cooler then the own charackter).
The future potential is imense (let me play as an Astartes/Terminator/Gray Knight or other race for example)

Really appreciate this review. Thank you for keeping it focused and real. One note I have is I do agree with their call that multiplayer pulls away from the story. I have found that when attempting to play with others they tend to rush the story. Being solo does change this of course but I can understand the desire for something more to be there for co-op or at least give the option

Great review buddy. I pretty much agree with everything said here, though I will say I play with a controller, and the shotgun in particular feels really heavy and satisfying to me. Much, much better than the fairly floaty Van Helsing games. Once again though, the review is basically spot on. Keep up the good work.

  • @Neverhoodian

Bought this game on sale for the PS4 and am currently tackling a few campaign missions at a time as a long range Assassin. So far I'm really enjoying it. The game certainly has its share of rough edges; the cover system is redundant (I find kiting to be more effective), picking targets can be fiddly and the camera allows you to see straight through the level architecture at times. That said, I like how combat and loot are implemented, with a slow but steady drip feed of progressively better weapons and gear that encourage experimentation and a respectable quantity of beefier enemies mixed in with the cannon fodder.
Last but not least, the game's attention to detail is great for Warhammer 40k nerds like myself. Weapon and equipment types are fairly accurate to the lore, and there's a good variety of enemies to fight. Also, can I just say how great it is that Nurgle gets the spotlight for once instead of the usual Khornate followers in most WH40k video games.

Oh damn if this game is slow then its exactly what I was looking for lol. These other arpgs where you barely pause for a moment to even think about what you're doing or to appreciate those skills and weapons you've been grinding hours for don't make any sense to me.

I picked this up for $15 recently, and do not regret it. Money well spent, and I'm having fun so far with a melee build.
It's a shame that this game and WH's other ARPG (Chaosbane) both seemed to have gotten better a year or so after release, but few people bothered to re-review them or care in any way.
I like both. Are they the best in the genre? No. But they are totally worth a buy of you like the genre, the setting, and catch a Steam or GOG sale.
PS: I do not think the top down ARPG genre is built around coop play. I think these types of games are much better as solo experiences. Good coop games are built from the ground up to be coop...Like Fortnite or Mario Cart.

Treat this game as Diablosouls. It's gonna be way more clunky, the systems require us to master them, the world of 40k is perfect for a darker story, spotted with some sporadic humor, it's an antithesis to the standard ARPG. I hope it keeps polishing further.
I DON'T reccomend this game willy-nilly to anyone, I point out the pacing, and difference in approach and point to a let's play to figure if you want to bite deep into it. But for me, I actually fell in love with this game, as it's exactly what I didn't know I need in my life, so I'm very happy.

I played this for roughly 20 hours back in its early stages over a year ago... it felt very incomplete. Glad to see at least some aspects have come into their own. I'm a bit sad about the "slow"ness of the game, as it doesn't need to be THAT slow, but it isn't a complete deal breaker.
