  • On my way to Shitefest, I had a lovely ride aboard this 1990 Leyland Olympian triple-axle double-decker, built for Hong Kong, but ending up as a Megabus in the UK. Here, owner David fills in a bit more of its history, and talks about the joy of maintenance when you have a ten litre Cummins engine to deal with.

Cool .... Just happened upon this. Have lived in Hong Kong on & off since 1996 ... When you walked upstairs & I clocked the gaudy seat fabric (which you can still see in use in HK) that brought back some memories. Getting the 6X from Queens Road to Stanley for a Sunday afternoon beering & people watching. My daily commute on the 26 from Star Ferry to Marsh Road .... All on that bus ... Very cool.

those double decker buses are so great for outward visiablity as a passenger. I love how you could survey all of the city from the upper level. We have nothing like that in the US so i'm very envious. .

Not only is the driver very comfortable & at ease with driving the vehicle but, he seems very knowledgeable about it aswell. 👍😉 That's really good to know not just for himself but, for those who wish to know at least certain things about it if they aren't mentally able to take everything "on board". NO PUN ment but it Is there.😁

My boss bought one of these for school runs , it was exported out there brand new (Hong Kong) from the UK, and then it was exported back to the UK at the end of its service, to live out it's retirement days here in the UK, where my boss bought it, it had 102 seats, yes that's right 102, when I was allotted this bus, the school run I was given, used to have 2 single decked buses on it, and was renowned as one of the worst for disruptive teenagers/students, so here I was with the lot of them on one bus, "My Bus", well what was I supposed to do, I knew I was probably wasting my time with the last year students, but perhaps I would stand a chance with the rest of them, so on the evening pickup I parked up at the back of the que of buses, I should have been at the front, when loaded up I got out of my cab and asked for attention on the lower deck, I did the same on the upper deck, and said my name is Barry or BJ if you wish, fat I may be but I'm not a fat bastard so don't call me that, this raised a few laughs, I went on I will treat you with repect and as adults, because you are now on the first rung of that ladder to adulthood now you are in senior school, and I expect you to treat me as an adult with respect as well OK.
I was surprised that even the senior students in the main also accepted this arrangement, the bus had loudspeakers and an amplifier but nothing else , I think back in Hong Kong it was part of an address system as it had knobs and dials to suggest it had, so I asked and cajoled the boss to put a CD Radio in it, said to students to supply their own compiled CDs for me to play for them (at loud volume), this was my secret weapon, Christmas and Halloween time I let them decorate the bus up as they liked provided they cleaned it up afterwards, they were happy, I was happy and so was the school, this got back to my boss, he called me into the office and said, I knew if anybody could sort out problematic kids you could, I replied it's not hard boss, I found out just treat them as adults, but with fun.
Too this day I'm 71 and retired now, I sometimes bump into those same students in the town, most married now with kids of their own, and when they say to their kids, BJ here was the best school driver ever, I can feel my eyes filling up, even as I write this.

@@HubNut Hi no, his school and service buses were a white main body with a tri colour swirling stripe down the side with the company's name in the middle of the stripe, the only different ones were his executive coaches, they were all something special in various colours and had a different company name, both company's belonged to him though, they were a private family buisiness of long standing.

When you looked doon the clyde to the squinty bridge, you were looking towards my neck of the woods. Kingston bridge is probably a 20 min walk for me. And I see you figured out about the old buildings in Glasgow. there's some lovely bits of architecture. The trick when looking at the buildings, is look up. Loads of wee details on the buildings, some dating back to the late 1800s. I think my tenement was built around 1889.

We had the Megabus here in Manchester. Usually they'd be used for long haul services but sometimes they were subbed in on normal service routes. This is how I encountered them, on the 216 route from Manchester to Ashton-under-Lyne. I thought they were pretty cool and made some good noises. They also rode well, probably due to the additional heft when compared to a standard sized bus.
My god though, the unsprung weight must be ridiculous!

Hi have to say that since I stumbled on your video’s, by accident, I feel much more cheerful. Where else could you find tests and living with vehicles varying from a bus to a 2CV and such a cheerful bunch of people. You so remind me of a friend, who as we were getting into Japanese motorbikes, went and bought rebuilt and rode a Panther 100. A single cylinder steeply inclined single cylinder of I believe 600 cc!! Mind you as I had a love affair with Reliant Regals and MZ motorbikes and Moto Guzzi’s odd and old V Twins, I can hardly criticise . Please keep going this such a refreshing view, oh and a Nissan Leaf as well! An open mind is a healthy mind. Regards Bill

Is the bus driver from the Netherlands or Germany? If not, what language was he speaking? I grew up in West Virginia and everyone says I talk funny, but cor, I don't mangle the King's English that bad. If that's what it was....

Indeed. Glaswegian to be precise. I like a Scottish accent myself.

Please understand that I mean no offense but hearing a real Scot is a rare thing here. All we ever get is the fake crap that is fed to us in the movies. The problem I have with the accent is the fact that I am so caught up in the delightful melody that I can't understand a thing he is saying. To me it's music instead of verbal communication which is my problem, not his. I should be ashamed of myself since my ancestor left Sterling via Perth for this side of the pond in 1707....

You should hear him and his pals when they're talking to each other. I sometimes struggle to keep up!

May have to rethink my plans for a visit. I'd starve before I could get a restaurant order straight....
