I live in Iowa in the US, and I listen to a ton of sports talk radio. They always air a travel segment, where the dude today spoke of landing in a plane in Sao Paulo. He said he couldn't believe how large this city was. And he said there were vids like this on RUclips. He couldn't have been more right. This is fascinating.
Those aren't skyscrapers. A building is considered a skyscraper if it's taller than 150m/492 feet. While Sao Paulo has probably the most high-rise buildings in the world _(~40,000-50,000 buildings above 35 meters/115 ft),_ there're "only" 18 skyscrapers. The view is so impressive! Like a sea of high-rises. Hong Kong is another example. But they lack space. So it's much more dense in Hong Kong.
I always LOVE this runway approach at Congonhas airport! So much more impressing than arriving at Guarulhos Intl. For 20 minutes you see nothing but skyscrapers pass your window ... This city is soooo damn HUGE !! Been there like 12 times now , and I like it even better every next time :o)
são paulo is the most amazing city in the world. from up there, from down here... i've been to every single big and important city in the world, and none beats the cosmopolitanism, joie-de-vivre and entertainment options of the greatest and richest brazilian city. I LOVE YOU São Paulo
State simply fascinating! Diverse nature, you can pass one of the most beautiful spots of the Brazilian coast, Ubatuba / Ilhabela and two hours to get the country's most imposing mountains with peaks of 2,800 m. A rich interior, designed, best place to live in Brazil, a thousand forms of tourism / leisure cities scattered throughout the territory, a capital city which is one of the most important cities in the WORLD, thriving economy..I LOVE SP!!!!!!!!!
^when the airport was built, decades ago, it was OUTSIDE the city. The city grew and ended up growing around it. there is another airport in São Paulo, much bigger but away from downtown. But its for international flights. Congonhas is used for domestic flights.
Wow I'm amazed...I'm lost for words,i wonder what most of those skyscrapers are used for though? & this has to be the city with the most skyscrapers in the world
jesus, im from sao paulo and i live here i had never noticed how big the city is i mean, i know it has 22 million inhabitants, but i had never realized how hard it is to see the edge of the city but anyways, i love this city and im very happy to live here
The great SP has around 18 million people. In area, it's much smaller than it's supposed to be though if compared to Tokio, NY, and Mexico city. The reason is the number of vertical buildings that are evrywhere and are home for millions of those people. IMO, one of the most incredible cities in the world. What a power !
Sorry, it took me so long to reply to your comment but seriously than you Nancy! I;ve just booked tickets Brazil and am only too exited to visit. I'm learning the language and all. I'm hoping to experience the "best of things" in your tau pais beleza. Thanks for your assurance, hopefully our paths cross in the short time that I am there.
I think you're right. I was looking for some info about it and the extended metro almost hits 30 million. But it's more than 29 million and a HELL of a people concentration anyway.
that number was taken by a forumer at Skyscrapercity. He had a friend who worked at the Prefeitura (City Hall) and got him a list. Yes, imho, the time for São Paulo to build over 200m is long due... when Banespa was built, in 1947, it was the tallest in the world OUTSIDE the US. Now, Brazil lags far behind DOZENS of countries...
11 million is the population of the municipality of São Paulo. The built in urban area extrapolates the municipality limits. The urban stain of São Paulo includes municipalities such as Guarulhos, Diadema, São Bernardo do Campo, etc, etc, etc. Totalling about 19-20 million people.
@13charachters I know what you mean. Have you ever seen the film 'Metropolis' by Fritz Lang? Everybody getting around in the air! He almost described the modern day Sao Paulo in that film. Everybody seems to get around by helicopter!:-)
About Panama having more skyscrapers, it dependes on what you classify as skyscrapers. True, São Paulo has no building over 180 meters tall, and Panama is building sveral 300 meter tall towers. But the concept of highrise, for some includes buildings over 12 storeys tall. And São Paulo has over 40 thousand buildings over 12 storeys.
yes. buildings in Sao Paulo are not very tall due to some very, very strict city laws regarding constructions and land uses. Instead, buildings here are identificated by their architecture rather from their highness
Right. Actually, different countries have different concepts about what a metropolitan area is. Sometimes, the area that americans would consider as a metro area wouldn´t be so if the brazilian or european method is applied. It´s hard to say who is bigger than who when considering the Metro area. It´s easier when we consider only the main city, and the list would be tottally different
@rodolfosevero007 I'm Brazilian. I live in the US for several years have been mugged here, but never in Sao Paulo. The places I've lived and stayed around in Sao Paulo are extremely safe (Vila Mariana, Moema). I've also been to Maringa a few times and I don't believe for a second it is safer than those parts of Sao Paulo -- it's right next to Sarandi -- enough said.
the metro of DF is the 3rd largest subway in the world, im not sure but the biggest is Tokio subway and second is Moscu metro, the most efficient metro in Mexico is the Monterrey metro
Yes, Sao Paulo has more skyscrapers than any other city mentioned here. But in terms of hight, Panama has more towers. There are several quantities in asia ,also, for example in Malasia. In São Paulo is being built the largest park in extension of the world. I think , if we want to compare São paulo, we can compare with Chicago, not with Shangai. Besides, São Paulo has not that low self esteem to build great edifications just to show off. Here is built because it´s necessary.
@OSTARAEB4 sorry, New York has many more skyscrapers in São Paulo, specially because most modern definitions are that skyscrapers are buildings over 200m. And São Paulo has NONE of those. While New York has 51 and several more under construction. Also, NY is larger than it seems and the skyscrapers built in a denser way, with less spaces between them.
Good to learn a little Portuguese because a small percentage of Brazilians speak well other languages, although in general people are kind and try to help tourists even without understanding them. May is a good month because it's not so hot or rainy in Rio de Janeiro etc, but it's getting colder in São Paulo and the South. Between June/august (winter) there is more rain in the North/Northeast, some cloudy days in Rio and in the South, brrrrr. If you need informations, send me a private message.
@OSTARAEB4 it may LOOK like SP is four times the land area of NYC. So I can only suggest you go to GoogleEarth and measure it all yourself. Measure the skyscrapers are of NY and the highrises area of São Paulo. Those are always easily distinguisable because of the shadows.
@dailyuser2012 NO-New York doesn't have nearly as much skyscrapers and isn't spread out so vast as Sao Paulo. New York has numerous business skyscrapers, not cookie cutter condo skyscrapers everywhere like SP. Then again, the spread of this place makes Los Angeles look small.
LA was harder when there were more blacks. i passed through compton on a coach in 87' and it looked pretty rough. im going to go to LA in 2 years, ill see for myself if what you claim is true.
@Pdeoliveira1923 you are wrong in BOTH cases. EVEN if you consider CTPM together with São Paulo metro, the total of lines is 260km. Against 369km of NY subway. SO WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? NY: 468 stations SP: 58 (metro) + 93 (CTPM)
That´s true. Besides, in NY they use a different concept of Metropolitan Area. They take places there are even out of NY State !! If that concept was applied to Latin American cities like Mexico City and Sao Paulo, they would be even bigger both in area and population
Madrid boy: This is NOT the Guarulhos airport, it is Congonhas, a domestic airport in Sao Paulo. If you landed in Guarulhos, you should know there is no tall buildingas around that airport. Sorry for the rude comments from matuto 2007.
I live in Iowa in the US, and I listen to a ton of sports talk radio. They always air a travel segment, where the dude today spoke of landing in a plane in Sao Paulo. this is hardly the best video of a Sao Paulo landing, this one looks dull and ugly. See this one: ruclips.net/video/OMx_uyW9dG4/видео.html
This city is MASSIVE! I was there in 2007 and it was a life changing experience. I hope to return one day!
this is hardly the best video of a Sao Paulo landing, this one looks dull and ugly. See this one: ruclips.net/video/OMx_uyW9dG4/видео.html
But you guys despise cities like LA, so I wonder what you must think about Sao Paulo, which is messy.
@@ThomasJr Who are _"you guys"?_ Who's despising LA.
Also LA is a very flat city. Besides downtown, there aren't many high-rises.
Nice video :) I do like Sao Paulo - the sheer mass of skyscrapers! Love the metro and I cant get over the fact its a really really big city!

NYC's got nothing on this!!!
são paulo is the most amazing city in the world. from up there, from down here... i've been to every single big and important city in the world, and none beats the cosmopolitanism, joie-de-vivre and entertainment options of the greatest and richest brazilian city. I LOVE YOU São Paulo

Coruscant LOL! So amazing! buildings and more buildings blending with the horizon.
I thought that New York had the most tall buildings in the world but, I guess sao paolo is #1.
It is one the biggest cities in the world!!!!!!!!!

there is another airport in São Paulo, much bigger but away from downtown. But its for international flights. Congonhas is used for domestic flights.
I'm always feel afraid when the airplane begins to descend in Sao Paulo. Nice video!
Wow I'm amazed...I'm lost for words,i wonder what most of those skyscrapers are used for though? & this has to be the city with the most skyscrapers in the world
I cant get over how huge this place is
you'll see a great stadium here in SP, they completed 25% of it, and we started to build it later than other states

The cloudy version of a huge city in Cities XL... Sao Paulo would look beautiful with blue skies.
@nbmufc94 That suburb is Moema. We can see some avenues, it seems that the traffic is OK, but IT'S NOT. Keep out!
Right. Actually, different countries have different concepts about what a metropolitan area is. Nossa! Da ate medo, ne? Parece uma coisa de filme. Muito bem filmado tambem.
Proud to be paulista , Brazilian!!
Sao Paulo is technically the biggest city in the world, in terms of size. And the subway system is 3x bigger than New York City's subway system
@OSTARAEB4

I agree!
Greetings from Serbia!
and all this jumble of buildings shown below are a few miles away from the city center! incredible!!
@dailyuser2012 NO-New York doesn't have nearly as much skyscrapers and isn't spread out so vast as Sao Paulo. New York has numerous business skyscrapers, not cookie cutter condo skyscrapers everywhere like SP. Then again, the spread of this place makes Los Angeles look small.
it looks fantastic and a bit dangerous too
LA was harder when there were more blacks. i passed through compton on a coach in 87' and it looked pretty rough. im going to go to LA in 2 years, ill see for myself if what you claim is true.
Note this is not central Sao Paulo! The center is more huge !!
são paulo is the biggest city in américa !
IF it is a domestic flight, sit on the left. If it is an international flight (different airport), coming from Europe or USA, sit on the right.
hey dkg4444 the population of Sao Paulo (the city) is about 10,5 mi . Huuuge huh ? but its an excelent place :) Good video !
são paulo is the third city with the higher number of highrises. The second is new york and the first is hong kong
eso es apenas un Barrio!, this is only one neighborhood
Notoriously short runway. You can see how quickly the plane drops from clearing the tops of buildings to ground level.
Possibly the largest amount of high risers in a city anywhere. Enormous, boy what a nightmare getting lost here!
@Pdeoliveira1923

SO WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Shit! I thought New York was big, fuck no. Saludos a la gente de bonito Brazil.
New York City metro area is bigger than Los Angeles in coverage. L.A. is the 2nd largest city in the U.S.
Não é tão ruim assim. Você não usa a "cidade inteira" todo dia. Apenas algumas partes dela.
considering land area, right ?
keep calm and love brazil
@saul25850
Brazil is in America already.. and you can find people from all of the world living in here as well
Nice Landing, chaotic city though!
That´s true. Besides, in NY they use a different concept of Metropolitan Area. They take places there are even out of NY State !! If that concept was applied to Latin American cities like Mexico City and Sao Paulo, they would be even bigger both in area and population
