  • Tom reviews the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series GR Sport including a 4000km/2500mi road trip plus off-roading at our test track.
The GR Sport is the ultimate 300 Series model - almost. That is actually the $1000 more expensive Sahara ZX. But the GR Sport has so far been the most expensive Land Cruiser model since the 300 Series launched with its 227kW / 700Nm (304 hp) 3.3-litre twin turbo diesel V6 engine.
Unlike other Land Cruiser trim grades in Australia, the GR Sport exclusively has triple locking differentials (front, centre and rear) and it also wears unique styling and all terrain tyres.
So, is the GR Sport the best Land Cruiser to buy?
    Time codes:

The LC300 is a rival to the Nissan Patrol, Volkswagen Touareg and also some ute-based wagons like the Prado and Ford Everest.

    Thank-you for the review.
I do wish reviewers wouldn’t brush over the tech deficiencies of these vehicles. The screens, software and tech is left wanting for a flagship vehicle in 2023 - especially at these German luxury prices. (CD players, WIRED Apple CarPlay, poor screen resolution and functionality - IS THIS REALLY THE BEST TOYOTA COULD DO?)
    What would I change:
    1) Add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
    2) Fix the front screen resolutions and UI design, so that it looks like it’s from this decade and complements the rest of the vehicle advances.
    3) Replace the CD with two wireless charging pads. (I don’t know - maybe families have more than one mobile phone.)
    4) Replace the poor quality rear screens with tablet mounting kits. (Anyone who can afford these cars can certainly afford new iPads every year - plus, kids like to watch different shows at the same time - less fighting.)
    5) Add a high-speed 5G wifi network to the vehicle. (The owner could add a data sim for internet access.)
    6) All variants should have the Heads Up Display HUD.
Other than these, I think the vehicle is a great improvement in design and capability.
    Thank-you again.

As a gr owner I don't care about the screen, I do care about the software being buggy and needing to turn off the lane assist and turn on the cruise control every time I start the car.
I do agree that the car needs to have two wireless charging pads and wireless android auto and car play. The cd player is for a large part of their owners, retired couples and they still mostly use cds for music, also in the outback no reception for streaming people who don't plan won't have music

The 300 Series GR-S has 1131 litres of cargo bay volume (no 3rd row seats) compared to the 200 Series which has 1276 litres with the 3rd row seats stowed away. The 200 Series is therefore positively cavernous when the 3rd row seats are physically removed. An Isuzu MU-X with third row seats folded flat yields 1119 litres. So the 300 Series is really lacking in terms of cargo space, especially as the 2nd row seats cannot slide forward, like they do on the 200. Which is a bit of a shame because the 300 would be an excellent expedition vehicle, but it can't carry as much as a 200 internally, and the low roof load capacity means that a roof rack isn't going to easily solve the issue of reduced cargo space inside the vehicle for those used to the 200's significantly bigger volume.

We also tow a caravan with this car - which it does with ease. However…. the Q7 is not a 4WD and won’t be of any good when we decide to do a lap of the map - so we will need something different. I agree with you on the lane keeping feature - it's intrusive. First thing I turn off when I start the car, but you have to do it EVERY TIME you start the car which is a pain.
One thing to note for everyone who wants to fit a bullbar and winch: The standard springs do not cut it at all. Steering was horrible and had a lot of 'bump steer' when going through potholes. I had to replace the OEM springs with a set of Dobinsons (new shocks too - small 30mm lift) which has transformed it back to a lovely ride again.

Geez you can pick up a top of the range twin turbo V8 Touareg for the same price as this, and it would make this feel like a Corolla in most regards. Of course if you are doing serious off-road or touring the 300 would be better, but I best most will spend their time picking up kids from school and visiting the local supermarket.

I dont get why people would buy this rather than a y62 Nissan patrol, ford Everest or a large v8 American Ute. Must be paying for the Toyota badge and skin.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  Год назад +10

If you want a full size wagon with a diesel, that rules out the Patrol. LC isn’t ute-based, so has a grade higher refinement than Everest (and is a bit bigger than that car). And not everybody wants a ute. So it’s possible to see why this car has a market.

    • @Paradoxical124
