I never have to record stacks cuz I always just use my alternate takes. I typically record A LOT of takes so I always have plenty to choose from when I'm mixing and want to add in stacking. I'll consciously try to switch up my takes to make them different -- higher/lower vocal tone, more or less emotion, emphasizing different words. So this comes in handy when its time to pick which take to use as the main (or which parts of multiple ones if I like the beginning of one take but the end of another) as well as giving me lots of material to stack with. Then when stacking, I'll either use my takes as-is or shift them forward or backward slightly on the timeline. You can even get decent results stacking a recording with itself if you pull it slightly out of time to add a reverb-like effect.
That advise on the pauses is so underrated. I've been rapping for about a year now and my stuff still sounds so cluttered. REMEMBER THE PAUSES! Great vid as always Cole 👍
Just found your channel at the perfect time. Got a couple things im cooking up and just need to figure out how to layer my vocals correctly. Thanks for making this type of content man, I subscribed
Sometimes I'll record a background vocal throughout the verse or hooks that's just suppose to be almost like an atmosphere where I'll saying/singing something totally different than the lead.
Cole i suggest making a video on rhyme schemes again, from the least complex every four bars to the most complex every bar or two (internal rhymes) and all the possible patterns you could you use ,thanks a lot
Thanks Dazza! I just started releasing my own music so from a music creation standpoint that's my main focus right now. I've been primarily producing other artists songs for the past 10 years, so when it comes to my own music, I'm just wanting to do me right now if that make sense. Thanks for the offer ✌😎 - Cole Mize
Instead of stacking and re-recording your entire verse over the lead vocals can you just duplicate the lead vocals and put them in the background somehow is there a name for what I am asking I thought it was backtracking but I might be wrong😅
I wouldn't recommend that. If you copy the vocal it's not going to add another layer of sound like recording a stack or a spot stack will. You would have to change the pitch or formant of the copy to get a different sound, but then the timing of it will still be too perfect so you will need to nudge it out of time. I typically sounds best to record your own stacks/spot stacks, but do what you think sounds best
@ColeMizeStudios I appreciate you brother I was trying to figure out an easier way because I'm actually a blind artist not completely blind but I have to speak everything into my phone my vision isn't good enough to read or write my own handwriting so I don't write anything on paper and everything I do is freestyle I record everything on bandlab didn't really know any other free workstations can't really get in a good Studio either because I get government assistance since I'm blind I don't have a job people consider me a liability which sucks so I'm trying to be self-taught in everything but also asking for other people's advice and I really appreciate you for answering thank you so much on top of everything else I'm using an Android phone which I have never used iPhones and I don't want to so I have to work with what I've got
My pleasure bro! Yeah Bandlab is dope for what it is! One thing you may want to look into building as far as a future studio setup is using the DAW I use called Reaper (for mac or pc). It's the most customizable DAW out there so you can make it work pretty much any way you want. So you could create macros/shortcuts to do pretty much everything you need in the daw. You could even program those commands to buttons on a midi controller (which is what I do). I think there's even options where you can use voice commands to trigger actions but I've never messed with that. But yeah man, keep making the most out of what you have and keep having fun bro! ✌😎 - Cole Mize
