To be fair, normally you do upgrade the protection detail once you become the official candidate AFTER the convention, but things are unprecedented nowadays. For instance, no candidate in the recent past has already been an incumbent once (within any living person's lifetime). Grover Cleveland was a long time ago. They were treating his resources as the same as any other candidate, when in fact they SHOULD have known that the Media demonizing him for years created the very toxic atmosphere that NO OTHER candidate in the last 100 years has ever faced.
