Hiking in Japan - Mt Kongo (日本でのハイキング、金剛山)

  • In the spring of 2017 I spent a week visiting Osaka, Japan. Having seen enough of the city I wanted to get out to the mountains for a day hike. So I hopped a train south and then made my way to a bus stop which I knew would take me to Mt Kongo. However, I didn't know which was the best trail up the mountain. So while I was waiting for the bus I asked a Japanese man dressed in hiking gear if he had any information. He said he was waiting for friends to pick him and they were going to hike the same mountain. He offered me a ride and the rest is history.

Hope you and Jen are doing well since the pandemic hit. Would love to hear an update on what you've guys been up to or the future of the channel. I live in WA too. I hear trails are just really busy from people wanting to get out.

    Nick:
I understand from reading your most recent comments that you will no longer be producing outdoor videos and instead will be concentrating on you and Jen simply enjoying the experience without the extra baggage of filming.
Your efforts, adventures and banter with each other will truly be missed.
Many thanks for all the wonderful trips you have done over the years and allowed us to share. We will continue to enjoy them as we rewatch favorite episodes.
Be well, be safe and Thanks Again 😉

The good friends we make along the trail... Yeah, this is one of the great things on hiking. People who share the same place, weather, and maybe the same feelings for that short period of time, a short period that we will never forget.
The soundtrack of the final part gave it a special touch, Nick. Loved it!
See you at the next trailhead!

What a friendly group. The Japanese are the most polite people I’ve got to know during a business trip to Japan. I’ll never forget that trip in 2019. I’m not surprised he offered you a ride; sounds a typical attitude in their culture.

What a great trip! I think I came down that trail one time but never up it. I saw a snake eating a frog at the bottom of one of the falls. There was a bad typhoon back in 1997 or that did crazy damage to the mountain. Fushimi Valley got nailed. Some of those giant trees at the top were sheered off! In case you're curious I climbed Kongo over 150 times back in the late 90's. My name was up there for a while but I guess it's gone now. You brought back lots of memories for sure. It's the best hike in the area without a doubt and the people could not be kinder. I drank so many beers and amazake up there. I miss Japan for sure. Enjoy!

I've been following your adventures of which most of them seem to take place in the State of Washington. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the local big "E" that's become a world-famous hike that's parr with your 'hiking' skills. Getting to the trailhead is part of the total experience but the effort is definitely worth it. Don't be surprised if you run into folks with different languages. Like every hike, not everyone is up to the challenge and they bail before summiting. You guys on the other hand can definitely handle it because I've seen you scramble here, there and everywhere. Believe it or not, you can't see Mount Ranier from the summit of the big 'E'....even on a clear day. Did I mention that the big 'E' stands for Mount Everest and it definitely is local to all who live in that part of the world. If you ever find yourself wandering through Marymoor Park in Bellevue and hiking up the rock, I won't join you but I'll watch you with a good cup of coffee and a camera.

So great to see new content from you two. As a kid I spent time in Okinawa so anything Japan is all aces as far as I'm concerned.

Does Jen have a sister? She looks exactly like my friend who also happens to be from Washington.
