  • Svetlana Yuryevna Zakharova is a Russian prima ballerina with the Bolshoi Ballet and an étoile of the La Scala Theatre Ballet.
    Svetlana Zakharova was born in Lutsk, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, on 10 June 1979. At the age of six, she was taken by her mother to learn folk dancing at a local studio, and by the age of 10, she had auditioned and was accepted into the Kyiv Choreography School. Valeria Sulegina was one of her teachers.
    In 1995, after six years at the Kyiv School, Zakharova entered the Young Dancers' Competition (Vaganova-Prix) in St. Petersburg. The youngest contestant, she took second prize and was invited to continue her training in the graduating course of St Petersburg's Vaganova Academy. It was the first time in the school's history to allow a student to skip two grades.
    After attending the pre-eminent Russian ballet school for one year, Zakharova then joined the Mariinsky ballet in 1996.
    Zakharova debuted with the Mariinsky Ballet in 1996, appearing as Maria with Ruben Bobovnikov, in Rostislav Zakharov's The Fountain of Bakhchisarai.
    In 1997, after her first year with the Mariinsky, at 18, Zakharova was promoted to principal dancer. Her first partner was principal Igor Zelensky.
    By 2003, Zakharova "was getting itchy feet" at the Mariinsky, and moved to the Bolshoi Ballet. The offer from the Bolshoi company was longstanding, and the departure from the Mariinsky was reportedly due to discontent with that company, as well as personal invitation from the legendary Vladimir Vassiliev.

    Incredible to see her body didn't change at all, she is the same at 18 and at 40. Looks like nothing can stop her, she is even better as she gets older. Gorgeous!

    The best compilation of the dazzling career of my favourite ballerina! Have followed her from her very first performance of Giselle as an 18 year old till now and everything in between. Her love for her craft ,the discipline she has followed, defying the years, to remain right on top. She has set a bench mark for all ballerinas.How difficult it must be to maintain her body and mind as she grew older,I salute her, there will never be another Zakharova.She is a living legend in the world of ballet.👏👏👏👏

    1997's Giselle is really rare! She was extremely precise even then! Of course with the years she's got a better maturity in acting and consciousness of her body. I think her favourite step is fouettés! I'd like to see something like this with Olga Smirnova: I love her

    Unpopular opinion: older dancers are more expressive. That's why in Japan elderly traditional dancers are considered more skilled and interesting and I think it's because gravity and sense of aging gives you some intensity that you can't reach when you're younger.

    • @BytomGirl
      @BytomGirl 2 года назад

      I don't think you are talking about about ballet in case of Japan but rather national dance, in ballet older is not better, if you are not expressive in your youth, you will never be expressive, you either dance with your soul because you understand your role or you never do.

    • @stellablu333

      @@BytomGirl yes I'm talking about traditional japanese dance

    • @BytomGirl
      @BytomGirl 2 года назад

      @@stellablu333 I know, I could tell, you can't compare it to ballet in relation to age, ballet requires a lot more stamina and skills when it comes to powerful jumps which you can't do at older age.

    • @stellablu333
      @stellablu333 2 года назад

      @@BytomGirl I agree, but between Zakharova at 18 and Zakharova at 35 I prefer the second one because intensity and expressiveness (even tho she was athletically better at 18).

    • @BytomGirl
      @BytomGirl 2 года назад

      @@stellablu333 I think Zakharova was always very expressive, if ballerina doesn't learn how to act before she graduates, she will never be good. You don't gain an acting talent just because you get older, I know. I played in a theater since I was 16

    I have an open and honest question, as someone who LOVES ballet, but admittedly knows very little to almost nothing about what distinguishes a GREAT dancer from a good dancer. My expertise is actually opera. So when I saw that someone had compared Zakharova's dancing to Maria Callas's singing, I really took notice, because to me Callas is the greatest of all opera singers, ever.
    And of course, I love Zakharova's dancing, and am amazed she's still just as good now (if not better) as she was at 18.
    My favorite ballet of all time is Giselle, and my favorite Giselle (particularly in the Mad Scene) has always been Natalia Makarova. However, I very much like Zakharova's Giselle too!
    Here's my question. From so much of what I've read about Zakharova, it sounds like probably the general consensus is that she is actually better than Makarova. Especially in Giselle. But, because of my lack of understanding all that goes into ballet, I truly don't understand where the difference between them lies. (I know that comparing dancers is pretty much as dangerous as comparing opera singers, so please know I am just trying to understand what to look at.)
    Thank you!

    Wow! That was incredible, thank you. She’s just marvellous , what a love for ballet 🩰 she must have. And what dedication it must take to keep it up. Let’s all not forget the Corp de ballet 🩰. They add so much to every performance. It must be so hard to stand still for long periods at a time or know just when to ‘go in’ just at the right time. My brain would be away with the fairies.
