Mamamoo have a project where in 1 year they are releasing an album for each member. Yellow Flower was for Hwa Sa, Red Moon was for Moonbyul and Blue;s is for Solar. In three months time, White Wind (or something like that) will be released for Wheein. Hey PD, love your reactions. You have a hell of a radio voice. Smooth! Cool!
This song is like the night ver. of Starry Night. The difference is that Starry Night was brighter, with more natural scenes filmed outside. While wind flower is filmed more in a city at night time
@@crazydiamond1273 dude... anything can be a common language, as long as the majority speaks it. It can be both a dialect and the common language. Cantonese, the dialect from the south could have been the "common language" had it not fall short in votes after the revolution. Nonetheless, it still doesn't change the fact that Mandarin is from the northern barbarians. "After the Revolution of 1911, national father Sun Yat-Sen and other founding members of new China vote to decide which language should be spoken. While Mandarin was a Northern dialect spoken by Qing officials, it was seen as a language of 'invaders'. In the end, Cantonese lost out by one vote."
that's not 'traditional mandarin' it's traditional chinese 。in hong kong we speak cantonese not mandarin 。the written form is chinese but the spoken form is different 。
You hit the nail on the head with the Hong Kong cinema influence, fans have been drawing similarities between certain scenes from certain Hong Kong movies to scenes in the MV and a lot of them believe that they were heavily inspired by all of that because the production crew of the MV were also posting a lot of pictures of old polaroids from the Hong Kong cinema era as well. Loved the reaction!
I think partly why this video had a lot of blue tones in it is because of the album concept? The album this time is blue;s which stands for blue sun. egotistic had a lot of reds because that song was in the album, red moon. then starry night had a lot of yellow, because that was in the album, yellow flower.
I realised that in Hwasa's scene, there were many yellow, in moonbyul's bridge, there were many red ribbon(?), in Wheein scene, there were many white (wearing white clothes and daytime scene) and during the part where Solar was in an underground tunnel, it was blue toned.
i'm so happy and proud of pd cpz he also teaches us about aesthetics, camera quality, video editing, sound design, concepts, etc. and as a multimedia artist i'm learning a lot from him. keep it up pd i'll never stop supporting you and your vids!
I really love that moment in reaction where PD seems lost and suddenly they get a grasp on the concept/what the song is going for and they appreciate the song more afterwards. I don’t know, it just makes me happy.
I definitely agree on the HK Cinema influence! I remember from the show I Live Alone(I think that's what it's called?) that Hwasa is a big fan of Leslie Cheung
Hey! Does anyone feel that the ISO noise and the whole grainy effect adds to the vintage vibes of Mamamoo? I think this is definitely a cool concept that they have this era! :) i love the song and the MV - love the cinematography of it
Wow that was seriously impressive! I don't know anything about hong kong cinema but I did see a big list on twitter of all the references to wong kar wai films like happy together (taxi scene) and 2046 (Solar's make up smearing and phone scene) and more.... but you picked up on it immediately! V cool!
I forgot to mention this on the Red Velvet reaction but I appreciate that you give songs another listen. Over the years as a K-pop fan, I have had to learn how I listen and interact with songs and MVs. I use to be really hard on girl group and wouldn’t like them if they were too cute or too sexy. I listened to some of the songs now and wonder how I missed that it was a bop. I have also learned that I am heavily influenced by the visuals of the MV which can either make me love a song more or dismiss it.
You're right about the Hong kong cinema influence and there's also a lot of references to Wong kar wai's movies in the Mv like happy together, in the mood for love...
so this is the disadvantage of being early... not being able to read the comments and opinions in the comment section haha *YAYYYY PD REACTED TO MAMAMOO WKSJCJD SO HAPPY!!*
Awesome reaction PD, I'm so happy that you figured out so many references! Just as an fyi, it was recently revealed that the 4seasons concept wasn't all supposed to happen in one year, but rather over the course of multiple years (presumably 2). However, the articles released during the announcement of the concept were misleading and indicated that all four season comebacks would happen back to back. Since fans got so excited, Mamamoo and RBW decided to go along with it and do all four right after each other in order not to disappoint. This explains why each comeback seems so close to each other and why they may feel kind of rushed. Despite this, Mamamoo was still able to come out with strong releases, which I think is extremely impressive.
OMG I love your reactions. And I scream so loud when you said moonbyul was your favorite now 😁. I'm so happy because this comeback is definitely her era. She slayed her vocals and rap in this song and the entire album.
It makes me soooooo happy seeing that you understood the references!!! So many reviews of this song missed the fact that this single is VERY conceptual in comparison to a lot of other singles. (I feel like that's very much Solar's doing c;)
wind flower is the song that got me into mamamoo and i truly think it's their best music video ever, i just looooove the colors so much and mostly the scene with wheein standing behind the fishtank !!! (+ the outfits are incredible) it was really nice to learn about the hong kong story with movies,.. i didn't know anything about this but ti's so interesting !!
i myself become a mamamoo fan too after egotistic and i loved every song i heard from them💓 Thank you Pd for this reaction i love to hear what you have to say💓
You should listen to the album. This is one of my favorite Mamamoo albums. "Wind flower" is not the best, Solar "Hello" and "No more drama" are the best in my opinion. Thanks anyway for the video, it's always good to hear your views on MVs. (I'm sorry if my English is not good.)
There official mmm yt channel now has all videos subbed in many languages...so you can watch them from there from now on Thanks for the awesome reaction!
awww PD... I like you even more now!!! (if possible!) my bias is Moonbyul too... and it makes me so happy to listen to her singing voice more in these last songs :3
So the MV shooting style is a lot like the Hong Kong director Wong Karwai and also their makeup and hairstyle. Hong Kong is known for the yellow saturation tone and the neon light
Same! I love it so much that I still often think of it when I happen to see a contrast between the clear skies and an orange building, or pink or yellow flowers outside! This MV is absolutely beautiful.
Loving these new thumbnail and set ups! Been waiting for your return and ahhhh it's all so gorgeous cant wait to binge watch all your videos I've missed!
I don't really know a lot about cinema but I thought about Wong Kar Wai movies when watching the MV, especially the taxi scene, it reminded me of the movie Happy Together. I really loved the music video.
wowwwww I am so happy that they reference lots of Hong Kong movies and cinema influence in that. Some singers just took the music video for nothing, or maybe the "crowded" city scene. As a HongKonger, it feels so good that there is an actual meaning of the location that music video taking from.
Agreed!!!! This one really reminds me a lot of old Hong Kong movies, especially the color, the lens utilization and the themes!! Being a big fan oh old HK movies, I enjoyed the MV a lot !!!
ahhh as soon as the mv came out my first thought was huh whens pds reaction video coming? i love your reactions, your analyses are enlighteningly spot on and im glad to hear youre becoming more of a fan of this group i hold so near and dear to my heart ♡
As you probably know Mamamoo is releasing 4 mini-albums during the year-long 4 seasons/4 colors project so Blue;S is not really a quick comeback - if anything it's a bit on the late side since it's the fall album. The winter/white album featuring Wheein will probably come out in 3 months. Thanks for all the info about the influence of HK cinema on this MV. You might want to check out the teaser for a scene that's not in the MV - they're betting roses while playing an intense mahjong game in a scene that reeks with HK gangster noir. Hwasa is a total Leslie Cheung fangirl and if I recall correctly A Better Tomorrow is her fave film. I watched a lot of HK flicks back in the 80's, esp anything produced or directed by Tsui Hark (Peking Opera Blues was my fave). They were as much of a revelation to me back then as my discovery of kdramas a few years ago and I think they had an enormous influence on the freewheeling "anything goes" aesthetic in Korean film & tv and kpop MV production.
If you can understand Chinese, there is a Taiwan Moomoo she explained more about the song, about the lyrics (the metaphor inside) , also the 2 rapping part lyrics wrote in 2 different korean way to express that explain the meaning and emotion of the song more clear. She also said the reason to film it in HK because of the atmosphere of HK at night that help to reflect of the loneliness after the break up. It is a really good clip to explain such thing as I don't understand Korean that I have missed a lot from the song and lyrics (based on translation from someone else only).
@@muse_solar_kys3358 I only know a few words in Chinese and couldn't find the video - it's probably titled in Chinese too. There's also a vid by an HK moomoo about the locations and another one that shows scene comparisons to Wong Kar-wai films. I agree that HK was a good choice and that they did a nice job of using the settings and lighting to reinforce the emotions of the song. Some shots reminded me of Kowloon in the 80's - doesn't look like its changed much. The graininess that PD pointed out also makes it seem like an old home movie so that added a sense of realism to the queasiness and desperation of the unsettling, unnatural neon lights. This MV is so unlike the fantasy land MVs that most girl groups release.
Thank you for your review! I’ve just discovered you from your lgbt shorts and I’m glad you do such great reviews of all kpop songs! I hope you continue!
Oh, now I get why the theme of their Season's Greetings is Detective/Suspect. Because the HK cinema in that era is full of crime/action films. Thanks for the insight, PD!
Wow thank you so much for your reaction and providing the info regarding the HK Noir inspired cinematography now I understand what the Noir film inspired teaser was about! :D
Yes you said what I literally wanted to hear ! This mv solely gave me wongkar’s cinema vibes like fallen angels, happy together and in the mood for love!
I'm super late to this but I immediately thought of Fallen Angels when I watched this (one of my favourite films of all time)... and the Mcdonalds at the end really finalised it haha
I've been waiting your reaction, especially on Hong Kong cinematic approached! I know you will love it! 😉 As a cinephile myself, I really appreciate the aesthetic of this MV. Suddenly, I'm in the mood to re-watch Wong Kar Wai's films :)))
Exactly! Very stylistic reminiscing of the hong kong cinema, now I see. The first time I watched it reminded of Wong Kar Wai's Happy Together, at least the cinematography.

I did catch some retro vibes, the cassette tape reminded me of Loona's retro videos, especially Vivi's solo. You are complain about the grainy shots but the talk about how they are trying to grab an 80 or 90 vibe. I think the video as a hole was aiming for this including the style of which they filmed.
Another thing I think they did was make certain colors pop depending on the member with their individual seasons and associated colors A lot of Blue for solar Yellow for hwasa Red for moonbyul And White for wheein

I thought Blue;s is for Wheein?
Musketeer009 that's false
Musketeer009 this has been said by mamamoo themselves
Subs are up on their official channel :)
This song is like the night ver. of Starry Night. The difference is that Starry Night was brighter, with more natural scenes filmed outside. While wind flower is filmed more in a city at night time
the symbol that solar writes on the mirror reads "wind flower," in traditional mandarin which adds to the hong kong aesthetic.
Yeah, both characters on the mirror together means "wind flower" in chinese
