My younger days I would buy Hamburger Helper and put it back in the pantry but I would find I had no milk sometimes and no money for milk so I would use a trick my mom did and use a little hot water and dry coffee creamer. It worked and we ate it.

    • @SeeMindyMom
      @SeeMindyMom  3 года назад +5

Oh that's a great idea! I have heard of using some powdered milk, but I would not have thought of coffee creamer!

I don't use creamer in my coffee, but pick up creamer on clearance (& coupon) for just that. Creamy like real cream, but shelf stable)

I really enjoyed this. Just today I made Spanish rice-a-roni but I always make a pot of plain rice along side, then stretch it out with the plain rice, and add veggies and usually a meat. Today in addition to the canned tomatoes per the box instructions, I added fresh spinach, onion, green bell pepper, diced cooked chicken, and some cooked black beans and pinto beans. Added my own extra seasonings of cumin, chili powder and garlic powder, salt/pepper. It makes a big pan and extends the box by three times, I think. I find these processed packaged boxes are too much spice and salt so that by stretching it with plain rice and veggies/meat, it tastes better.

    • @karenkent8525

We make spanish rice a roni and add coin cut smoked sausage/kielbasa along with a can of tomatoes, a can of corn and a can of black beans and top with cheese. Two packs would feed my family of 6 with left overs for lunches. Its really delicious and so easy that you can take it on the road like camping. I am going to try your variation!

My daughter loves the HH beef stroganoff but we have to watch because of her stomach issues. If I go to make it and am out of her lactaid free milk I either don't make it or use regular milk and she suffers. That's how much she loves the stroganoff. But I am going to try using just the water next time

Funny that I see this video today, last night I was walking through the store and saw Hamburger Helper and wanted some but thought no I need to eat a better quality meal than that. I did not think to add veggies to it and do a greek yogurt instead of milk, I think I will give this a try the next time I am not feeling like making dinner. You always have some really good ideas.

If you add grated squash, eggplant, etc... to dishes before you add the grated vegetables take a kitchen towel and put the vegetables on the towel then squeeze the excess moisture out like you do with frozen spinach. Keeps dishes from becoming watery.

That's so funny; I do almost exactly the same with the cheesy Italian shells. It's the only one I buy. I add hot Italian sausage, diced tomatoes (from a can usually), and see what other veggies I can sneak in. I usually add a little more pasta and liquid and some Italian spices just to stretch it, and my husband doesn't know the difference. I will have to try it with zucchini though! Also, that crunchybtavo one looks good, so I will look for that, too.

Unfortunately I work 5 nights-3rd shift- a week (I have Monday’s & Wednesdays off) so trying to keep a clean home & cook is nearly impossible I’m exhausted mentally & physically.

I don’t use it a lot, but I try to be more realistic in my videos about what is accessible to people (in the US since 90% of my audience is from here). That’s why I added vegetables to mine, left all or most of the meat out, and used Greek yogurt in place of milk. There is a lot of food snobbery here, and internet MD’s and food scientists that make it difficult for people on a tight budget to feel like they can feed their families decent nutrition. They make people feel like if they can’t feed their families organic, grass-fed, non-gmo, pasture-raised, preservative/additive free food 100% of the time, then by-golly, they’re just horrible people who hate their kids. And quite frankly, that type of eating just isn’t sustainable from a financial standpoint or even accessible for a lot of people. I have done a TON of my own research into these matters, and I have made it my mission to show how we can still have some decent nutrition at a very low price-point, even if it isn’t “perfect” in the eyes of some. 🤷‍♀️

Just curious, when you go to eat this, do you take out the tomatoes and chips and then microwave it to warm it up or do you have another system? Are the lunch prep containers microwave safe? I'm thinking of investing in some. Thanks!

My grandson is moving into an apartment at college this year and will need to provide his own meals. I’m going to put these recipes into a memo for him!

Good deal, Kym! These would be pretty easy for somebody just starting out with shopping and cooking for themselves!

Shopping sales is always exciting! My concern with boxed hamburger helper though and similar items is that they usually have a lot of preservatives such as MSG and Maltodextrin etc...not good.

@Sundari there are meals just as cheap without all the preservatives...not trying to be critical but there are ways to still spend the same amount and not eat the poisonous preservatives.

Around me in suburban Philly sales mostly start and end on the weekend. What is annoying is that they are all different some are Friday others Saturday or Sunday!

Should have used another box of Hamburger Helper for $.75 and more food. Servings were very small.

I don't think that's possible with the box dinners, because they all have some kind of dairy in the ingredients. I have other videos that are more friendly to the plant-based crowd. :)

A big part of her channel is to help people who may struggle with budgeting or need assistance knowing how to cook on a budget. Part of that is explaining the deals one can get and showing what she bought so others may be able to recreate the meal.
