  • An attempt to compare & contrast the sound of chromatic harmonica (Hohner Super Chromonica in C customized by Steve Malerbi) and diatonic harmonica (Joe Spiers level III Golden Melody in C) using overbends. Warts & all!

    Dude, awesome video. I was really wondering about the difference in the sounds between these two. Overall I like the chromatic best, so I'm going with that. Thanks for this ingenious comparison!

    Excellent use of your editing program ! Nice idea and nice playing. The contrast is not that big, but somebody like Little Walter made more use of the specificities of the chromatic, like split chords. That would make the differences between the spirit of the two more obvious. But this is a comparison between sounds, not between styles.

    I like diatonic harmonica
    For its unbeatable portable size & vibrato
    The best harmonica is it always with you when you want to play 😊

    Sir
    I want to pick up Harmonica and start from scratch
    but i want a durable and a 'one-time-investment' kind of piece to start
    i.e the one which can allow to me to play a majority of songs, what should it be... a diatonic or chromatic?
    ps: im ready to do hardwork..and i just need a piece to suit my ever widening musical interests and would last long too

    BTW, did you experiment putting a chromatic through an effect pedal ? Would some overdrive make it sound more bluesy ?

    • @bengravesmusic
      @bengravesmusic  8 лет назад

      Hey Tom! Thanks for the feedback... I'm not a pedal guy, but I know a lot of harp players use effects, like my buddy Damien Masterson, who plays his chromo harps thru effects sometimes. If I want a Chicago sound, I go directly into a small low-watt tube amp, like an old Fender Champ.

    Nice -- and I realize you're comparing the sound of the two -- but I'd rather see you play them out of the box. I think most folks, including myself, would rather not spend the time and money to get customized harps -- and the extra effort required to play diatonic harps chromatically or semi-chromatically in order to achieve all the sounds that aren't there to begin with. And, no offense intended, but after 11 years I know that it's possible to play very good blues on out-of-the-box harps, so, like, why bother with expensive tweaked harps? Am I making sense?

    • @bengravesmusic
      @bengravesmusic  4 года назад +1

      To each his own! I notice the difference in tone and playability big time with a great custom harp, but Howard Levy can make an "out of the box" Special 20 sound amazing! I play lots of styles, including jazz and even classical on diatonics, so intonation and setup help me a lot.
