    That 540i with that wheel and tyre combo not only looks sick, but also looks like it could really lay it down on a twisty B road. Tuned 700hp B58 the 540i gets my vote.

      M lights have always struggled in the handling department which is why the M cars exist, entirely different support. It'd see a -20s on a good track vs the M5, but for the cost you can't discredit it

    Classic B58 heat soaking, it is a great engine though. M5 would be my choice. Chassis dynamics, brakes and engine are the difference. That's worth the 8k to me, but each to their own! Can't believe M5s are now 38k, bargain!!

      Also, don't forget that the 540i is highly modified in order to make that type of power, and modified cars are ALWAYS a nightmare to keep, especially in reliability. And the B58 is not made for that kind of power. It even has a lower capacity, and it will get much, much more consumed than the S63, making the same level of power. If you have the money, the M5 is 100% more worth it.

      @@TheAlbaniaGamingwrong, with an intake manifold it will not heat soak. It’s just ethanol and a bigger turbo, that’s not highly modified at all in the bmw world. Literally 6k in mods. The b58 is a true 700-1000 hp daily

      @@techbutter2877 I can tell you for certain my mates stage 2 m5 he had was a rocket ship for example bro I am one of the only people on the planet who's pushed a b9 car to its limits. Appreciate the b58 engine has been around for a while but the s58 is the one now that car downpipe alone pushes over 750hp on pump that to me it's nuts no b58 is touching that

    I feel like this B58 had a strong showing here but was ultimately just becoming more and more heat soaked. The M5 appeared to have better repeatability of performance which would make sense as bmw crams as many heat exchangers as they can in the M cars which is often why they weigh quite a bit more. B58 showing how versatile it is once again.

    Great sportsmanship on the day. The M5 deffo needs a set of downpipes to get the most from a tuning session. Although still did a great job.. against its lighter sibling👌

    One massive advantage of the 540i over the M?
    Wagon!
    Yes you can get a 540i wagon, breathe on it for a proper under the radar sleeper.
    Loving the stance of both these cars, maybe more so the 540i with its pothole proof wheel/tyre combo.

    Close. Very close. I suppose if you factor in running costs,the ease of fixing / servicing a B58 over a 4.4 V8 and then the notoriously good reliability of the B58 then the 540i becomes a very interesting prospect indeed.

      @@SH7SH7SH7 I don’t know, the price of big V8 super saloons has been going one way for a while now,especially now the used car market is levelling out. Add in running M car costs, big insurance hikes it all adds up and even people with deeper pockets than average are feeling it. Undeniably the far more frugal B58 when tuned is 8/10ths of an M5 in terms of power, that’s enough for most people. The M car is the more special car though obviously.

      @@Buck3366 that's bull. No way that non built b58 would be as reliable when it has more than double the hp and a meth. I bet it would actually cost more in the long run to maintain than the M5 when things start going and you're still left with a slower 540i that is close to unsellable

      @@huiputka1 Why does it need to be built exactly? They are more than strong enough. It’s one of BMW’s most over engineered engines of modern times in fact. Does a B58 suddenly implode when it surpasses 699 bhp? I’ve seen them get way more and not go bang. Strange. Incidentally if you think a B58 is in any way similar to maintaining an 8 cylinder Twin Turbo 4.4 V8 I think you need to give your head a big old wobble. After you pay triple for a major M5 service that might in part show you just the fundamental and simple basic running costs of each in stock form or we would all be driving round in them instead of M140/240/340 etc. Notoriously brutal to run even when running well and that’s before you start to piss about modifying them. They plummet like a brick because they are killers on the wallet. Try a V12 M760Li like my friend did. 90k loss in under 3 years. Running costs of most houses! Big BMWs especially M cars are the bargains of the century until something goes wrong. Then need half the value of the car again to fix it! ( I’ll let you do the research to price up a replacement M5 engine over a B58, a price most don’t have tucked away for a rainy day).ANY modified car is susceptible to breaking but to say a modded 540 is going to be more costly than a modded M5 in terms of like for like running or hypothetical engine failure is just daft! Like I say, go price 2 engines up.

    2nd Launch from the M5 was mint. Even though on paper it looks to have slightly less legs, that secret M power pulls its weight over the imposter. But you get the 540i and you could probably run it for 2 years with the difference

The crazy thing is for me my dream is that F90 M5 but an option I was looking at is that 540i and the fact that it can keep with that M5 and saving 8-10 bags is nuts. That being said a few sent M5 would eat it alive. Still sick vid 🔥🔥🔥

    That 540i must of been suffering from heat soak after the first run as it was much closer. Either that or Trap speed of the m5 suggests it’s got more power than quoted

    There are more to performance variants than peek horsepower figures. You have looks, suspension, features, etc. But I definitively acknowledge that is a 🔥 540.

    The B58 easily can perform with 700bhp run after run, but it needs an aftermarket intake manifold (by Wagner for example). Then the IATs stay down low until the last run.

    Nice comparison. I think it would be a nice comparison to bring in the m550i. As a previous 17:51 owner of a B58 540i and a current owner of the N63tu2 m550i, the way they feel when moving fast (over 100mph) is so different. I haven't had the opportunity to drive an m5, but I would pick the m550i over the 540i, concerning performance.
    If I'm after reliability, there's nothing like the B58. Both cars are phenomenal. It's the once choice that's a win win, regardless

    Theres no point saying if the m5 was stock. Because this race was same power and m5 has a heavier engine and it just proved its better. Plus the 540i being stage 3 will guarantee have major problems down the line where as the m5 is only stage 1 so itl stay more reliable

    Great Sportsmanship, all respect. M5 S63 Exhaust is just beast, 540i Exhaust from that venerable B58 hits the spot too lol. Between the two I would choose M5 however I enjoy that B58 as well.

    cheapest 540i is 50k and cheapest M5 is 100k where i live. Not worth the extra 50k

    Talking about the people who are capable of purchasing both “as is” from factory, I’d say they’d still choose the M5 over the 540i because although the B58 is an excellent platform, the M5 wins in every other aspect.
    The price tag you’re paying is for the heritage, and amount of R&D and marketing being spent to distinguish itself from a regular 5-series. As an overall package and on paper, it still trumps the 540i in every other way, which is why it’s costlier.
    Although performance wise, the gap between a regular 5 series and M5s have decreased in recent years, people would still pay the premium knowing that they drive an M5, rather than just a 540i.

    Love me the b58, it's almost bulletproof but as an f90 owner; that s63 is limitless on power gains more when compared to no M engines + luxury, looks and swag. You got the wallet 99 percent you'll be pimping f90 s63.

    The b58 with xhp stage 3 shift a little bit late i would say, should shift before the peak torque. the gear ratio from 2 to 5 of zf8 on a 540i is not that good for a drag race. But still impressive.

    Im not surprised with the results, i called it on all before watching the video. What people need to understand is that the M5 is BUILT around doing what it does, everything plays a part with the internals etc. the 540i isn’t. Whether it’s tuned up or not, it’s not naturally built around performance like the M5

    In the end a m5 is just a factory built 540i just with upgraded suspension , better brakes more expensive interior and some cosmetic changes with a different drivetrain and power plant you could build the same car with the right parts 👀🤷🏽‍♂️

    What no one is taking into account is the fact that the m5 can be maintained even at the dealer or any bmw specialist while the 540i need the specific tuners and is prone to have more break downs and issues compared to the bmw m5 which has been tested by the factory to perform the way it should. The m5 is an out of the box sports car build by the factory which is less likely to break down if maintained well and looked after whereas the 540i is now pushing its limits with the tunes and is less reliable. BMW overall is less reliable, I own a 330i so I know but mine is only running a stage one and I’m happy because if I wanted to drive my car daily I can’t afford for it to blow a pipe or fail on me and with mods no matter how great of a tuner you are you run the risk. A person who wants to have one daily driver will go for the m5 while someone who has vehicles at disposal will tune a 540i for the kicks of it but if they do that for their daily driver that means that have enough money for public transport or they work from home and take the car out on weekends.

    I think the M5 can run more horsepower off of just an ecu tune. From what I have seen and ecu tune bumps it up to 700+ and downpipes take it to 750+. The one in the video seems undertuned. Let's not talk about messing with turbos and internals. Love the b58 as well.

    I’ve literally been saying for years b58 is the modern 2j but better. Everyone gets mad about it but it’s kinda true tho. They’ve only been around for a few short years and already do some very impressive numbers. Wait til they’ve been around as long as the jz has been around. Bet it’s a lot better than a 2j

    I'm suprised that BMW didn't create a B58 version of the S63.. Instead they opted to use the actual B58 in the 540.. Even the M550i used the S63 power plant, with lower compression and non twin scroll turbos. Most likely I guess its around cost.
