Hi Jay! The 1940 Packard Darrin was designed by Howard "Dutch" Darrin, a fine automotive stylist who was a consulting contractor for Packard from 1937 to 1954. He also designed Kaiser's Darrin sports car of 1954. One of his stylish cues in design were the sloping doors on his 2-door models.

My dad loved Packards and owned a 1949, and a 1956. But postwar Packards were considered inferior and rightfully so. It's no wonder that they went defunct, leaving that huge, multilevel factory to rot in Detroit. It's so symbolic of that city.

Packard lost its way after the war in my opinion I think they died during World War II they should have made the Merlin smaller.. after the war in hindsight it’s always 2020 they should’ve merged with Pierce arrow and peerless they could’ve been the three peas under one roof.. instead they got catfish by Studebaker crooked the books. The only reason Packard bodied bodied with Studebaker was to survive the 50s and the only reason they died in the 50s was because of that move. Packard was one of if not the most prestigious brand America had to offer in the 30s outside of Duesenberg of course but if you talk to anybody that drove a Duesenberg versus drives a packard, The Packard drives so much better Packard is all about balance light steering. I’ve talked to people who have driven Duesenberg they said that they drive like an old truck not a new one they are more fun to look at then drive. In the fast Duesenberg I’ll head to supercharger if they made them with and without the blower without the blower they wasn’t very powerful..
One day maybe we will get to compare those that would be so cool

'39 Packard, Cord all the way. 1941 Packard reminds me a little of aftermarket hoods that used to be available for VW Beetles until Rolls Royce threatened to sue; think that's due to headlights set into the fenders.

Some of the changes in the '41 model were adopted by Packard to address some of the problems of the Darrin design . Gorgeous it certainly was , but the changes to the bodywork as compared with the standard PACKARD convertibles , resulted in a slight loss of rigidity , and some scuttle shake on the move . This was fully addressed in the '41, with the addition of the lower sills and the changing of the door hinges to the front . As for the Overdrive , remember that in addition to the gas pedal controls , there was a LOCK OUT button on the dash , so that when you needed to get out of overdrive you kicked down the gas just for a second , and as the motor roared (showing you were back in normal high) , you pulled out the lock button to lock out overdrive . Some fancy coordination was sometimes needed on sudden steep downhills where engine braking was urgently needed !

What was your favorite car there I was just there yesterday they just built a 1932 Lincoln v12 Murphy body disappearing top do you wanna talk about royalty? Holy shit that car was incredible. The paint was so deep that every time that I walked up to it, even though it was a silver car, I could see myself in it… I don’t think I’ve ever seen a silver car/dark gray that had that much depth interior was perfect a lot of times when people redo the interiors for whatever reason they don’t pick up material that isn’t the same or isn’t stretched right this was top-notch. I can’t wait to show it. I’m not entirely sure when we’re gonna get to it. I’ve had a crazy week.

@@What.its.like. my favorite car there was probably the cord 812 or the model A hot rod. The cord is so cool because it’s not something you see too often and it’s the first car with pop ups and one of the first cars with front wheel drive. As for the hot rod, I’m a big fan of American Graffiti and hot rodding in the late 50s and early 60s in general

These were and are spectacular super luxury, and legendary cars. These were the absolute right direction for Packard to be going, not the Clipper introduced in 41. The Clipper was a separate line, and should have been a separate brand. It was, but too late in 1956. Oddly, the bullet free standing headlights in 1940 was very passe. And, pretty much the only brands still not putting the headlights in the fender was Packard, and Cadillac. My Druthers: the 41 Packard, and 39 Packard Darrin. Did you know? Dutch Darrin continued to sell the Kaiser Darrin sports car on the Hollywood strip after Kaiser moved to South America? Sort of like the Avanti story, but it didn't last long.

That was a bittersweet day because that’s a car that I’ve always loved and I didn’t quite fit in the car for it to be a comfortable driving experience and they’re super expensive and they never come up for sale the crazy thing is I fit in a cord but visibility isn’t good..

Never a company to rest on its laurels or to produce economy vehicles, it still saddens me that they went under in the 1950s. Even at that time their vehicles were above the limitations of the big 3.

Hi Jay!: What a GREAT Car! Like you, i think the 1939-41 Packards were the best looking made by the company. The Darrin bodies were probably the pinnacle. I know she's not the most comfortable, but that body was a sports car of sorts. They are not usually great comfort machines. I am not sure how Clark Gable fit in his, but he WAS kind of skinny! I bet it was just as cramped in his Duesenberg SSJ! (another GRAIL car, along with certain Bugatti 57's) I was also not aware of the other Darrin body styles either! Will have to research those further in MY Packard book! I actually like all three model years, would take any of them!!! Now for the WYR's. #1 Can I pick them all? ok, ok, I guess 1939. #2, Man you are killing me!! Going with the Cord here, just because of the supercharger. Again all three would be NICE NICE NICE!!

I prefer the 1940 Packard by Darrin but the De La hay of 1937 would win easily, it just wasn't on your list. I like Cords, but the 812 doesn't appeal to me as much as the Auburn boat tail or the Dusenburgs. I own three Packards, five model T's from 1914-27 plus a few modern cars. I'm looking to add a really nice model A ford and a 1937 airflow to the garage but that's it. The Packard I want is an early twin six - they are incredible automobiles. It's a full time job keeping them serviced and cleaned.
If I may add a plug - "Detroit Steel Artists" by Kilkenny is a great book about the pre-war designers.

The cowl/windshield affair was a 'speedboat' design - if you look at watercraft of the era it's instantly recognizable. Darrin, of course, is (and was) a book until himself. Maybe not quite as out there as Lowey, but worth a look and he did a beautiful job on the full size 51 Kaisers. WYR: 39 Darrin for purity, then the Cord for (relative) practicality, driveability and especially performance since you gave us the 812 with the supercharger - at 0-60 in around 13 seconds or so. that Cord might seem painfully slow today - but it would have beaten a 77 Volare with a 318, lol.

450 SLs are available at junkyard prices. They were the greatest of their time but completely forgotten now. I looked at one as a restoration but found restored ones going for under $4000. The restoration would have cost at least $20,000.

I reviewed that car last year and to date the worst car I’ve ever reviewed.. it’s nothing what it claimed to be, SL stands for super light and yet it weighs 3600 lbs, no company but Mercedes would advertise that as light weight.. just saying it was over priced $30,730 in 1980 which in today’s money 113,786.40 and what did all that money buy you... nothing in my opinion both the Lincoln and Cadillacs (79) are faster drive better seats are more comfortable you could buy both those cars and a garage to put them in for the cost of the 450sl.. I never got those.. they drive like crap they sit on the ground it’s hard to get in and out of doesn’t get good gas mileage. Costs a ton when things break. One day I’ll compare all three, everyone has a car they don’t like and that’s mine.. if you dig that car it’s cool I just don’t get it

Jay, you know I love Packard's and that gorgeous red Packard Is my holy grail.
Sure, it may not be the most practical vehicle, but if you could afford one of these you could care less whether it was practical or not. You were making a statement! One that clearly said hey, look at me I have arrived.
I don't care anout a family sedan. This is my FUN car. The back seat is small because I don't ever expect anyone to actually sit there.
Jay, When you were doing the buttons switches and knobs, It appeared that there was a knob on the left hand bottom of the dash that looked like it pointed down from the bottom . I was wondering if that was for a power top or a vent or maybe I wasn't seeing something right?

    • @What.its.like.
      @What.its.like.  11 месяцев назад +1

I have no idea what that knob does it wasn’t part of the dash diagram that I neglected to put in the video.. I’m a huge Packard fan as well.. this was a bitter sweet one. Because this is another packard I’ll never own, because how costly they are and size restrictions, Doug demuro talks about cars he can’t have because he can’t fit and he is taller than me.
This car was stunning I wish bill would have got me on camera saying wait you have a darrin lol. 1 at time seeing this car in person.
      Great choices
What sucks is, me and the curator talked car for a while that day great guy =). But he was saying it wasn’t always like that and 1930s era wasn’t always priced high rich people ruined it for the small collector.. it’s happening to the muscle cars now 6 figures for 340 cuda.. I told him in ten years time the 30s cars are going to get cheap ( not all cars some will still be unobtainable for the common man because of exclusivity)

@@What.its.like. Jay it's like that with everything. I play guitar and bass guitar and the prices of vintage instruments are exceedingly high. In fact I feel sorry for the younger generation of up and coming musicians. They will never ever be able to afford to own any kind of vintage instrument of any type.
It's sad because if you are someone who was lucky enough to have purchased one of these instruments decades ago before the value went through the roof, you now have something you can no longer take out and use to play music, because if anything happens to it the value is gone. I am in that same exact position with one of the bass guitars that I own it's worth so much now I can no longer enjoy it.
There is a reason for this and these ultra high prices. Most of the ridiculous inflated prices are created by the vintage dealers . But that is a very long story for another time.
