This Anime Will Haunt Your Thoughts for Years

  • This anime is something I have wanted to talk about for years, but didn't know how. First, it's subject matter is very sensitive, so I didn't know how to present it in a delicate and respectful way. Second, the critical response to this anime is mixed to put it lightly. From what I understand, people generally love the first seven episodes, but severely dislike the last five, and I can understand why. I even agree with a lot of the criticisms. Nonetheless, I find the premise of the show... and the questions it asks so intriguing, that I think it's worth your time.

The anime that he is talking about is called Babylon. He mentions it at 2:53 or so. There is no mention in the title nor the description of the video. Again, if you are reading this and want to know right away what is being discussed, he is talking about an anime called Babylon.

This was a great video, Max.
There's a great scene in LA Noire where Roy Earle tries to explain to protagonist Cole Phelps that you can't eradicate crime. It's impossible. Too many variables. It can only be managed.
Cole refuses to believe this, and fights in protest. He dies anyway, and the bad guys win.
However, his death becomes symbolic and a reminder of that dichotomy between good and evil and why we have it in the first place.
I'd love more topics on this.

There are only 3 types of crime. Intentional, accidental and negligent. No matter how reasonable, perfect or aware people are, accidental crime will never be eradicated until laws are.

This reminds me of the book: LORD OF THE WORLD, one of the first dystopias ever written(1907).

The Order of Christ Crucified! What a great example of the God that can enter into our suffering and death. Father Franklin is put through the ringer. Nietzsche was only half right. God was dead. We killed him because he gave himself to us to be killed. The choice to enter death for the sake of life. And transmute it. The true alchemy. Pax Domini
      But yeah good book.

I used to believe death was better (my mental health wasn't at its best), but these days I believe people should live for the sake of seeing the future. What a waste of potential it would be if someone who could achieve greatness died prematurely or if someone who could get the opportunity to experience greatness (see history unfold) died prematurely.
Regarding evil and good- Darkness is the absence of light, and as such, evil is the absence of good, but you can't calculate light level without 0 (darkness), and you can't acknowledge good with a point of comparison (evil).

    • @GeekNewz
      @GeekNewz 7 месяцев назад +4

@iamafraidofwomen I explained why I see life as better than death.
We don't know what happens in death, but life is full of foreseeable potential.
People should strive to live to see that potential unfold. It's like watching a TV show to see how it ends.
I wanted and tried to kill myself, but as I found myself too scared to do so each time I tried, I decided that I should just live my life and see where they go.

@@GeekNewz Fair enough, I don’t necessarily disagree, but you can see how the lack of a future can easily be part of the appeal for many people.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
02:50 🎭 *The anime "Babylon" tackles the sensitive philosophical problem of whether life is preferable to death, delving into a global debate on the acceptance of death.*
11:55 🌐 *The antagonist, IM Magas, influences a legislative debate by exploiting emotional appeals, questioning societal values, and introducing a supernatural element into the series.*
13:41 ⚖️ *The anime raises ethical dilemmas as characters grapple with the idea of going above the law to prevent potential harm, challenging the protagonist's principles of justice.*
16:35 🔄 *Criticism surrounds the final episodes of "Babylon," where a rushed narrative shift occurs, overshadowing the series' earlier political thriller elements and character arcs.*
18:20 🤔 *The ambiguous ending symbolizes the perpetual struggle between good and evil, suggesting that to understand and appreciate life, one must continuously contend with the concept of death and evil.*

Okay, but if we boil it down it is the argument as follows:
Suicide/chi in some instances is a slippery slope argument and can be used to make it more and more okay in society. We see that right now in Canada, where it started assisted death was introduced for terminally ill people and now it is suggested to the mentally ill.
The only way to avoid a slippery slope to not let doubt creep in. And yes, that is a harsh stance, but I assume it is also pretty much what Nietzsche would have seen fit.

    • @storage9578

    • @GeekNewz
      @GeekNewz 7 месяцев назад +18

We are humans. Doubt will forever creep in. What we need to do is prevent doubt from settling in our minds, nesting there, and affecting our choices.
Suicide should be only justified when the person has no other option (for example- someone terminally ill who can't be cured and is on life support). Providing this to the mentally ill should count as a crime, as, for example, chronic depression is a mental illness and I don't think there's a need to explain how dumb letting them suicide is.

    • @thiagotofano
      @thiagotofano 7 месяцев назад +14

That is true only if you add human traces to the subject of analysis, in this case, death. Especially if you add morality (the most human of human traces): is "shi" good or evil? And the only correct answer is: neither. It simply is. And it touches everything and everyone eventually. Not even stars escape death. Now when you see it as it is (a fact, stripped down of any and every human attribute), the decision to continue living or not is, as stated by Albert Camus, the ultimate philosophical dylemma, one that only you and you alone can answer. You see, it is not the "doubt" that leads to a "slippery slope", it is reality - and it is reality, so stripped down of human attributes, cold, dead and real as it in fact is, that will lead to Nihilism. Nihilism is the realisation that reality is "void", "empty" ("nihil") of human traces: there is no "sense", no "purpose", no "meaning" - these can only exist in human minds, not in anything "per se". Reality (and everything else included in the package, even life and death), simply IS! When you realise this, THEN you are free to ask yourself the ultimate dylemma proposed by Camus. Then, you can face the real freedom: freedom to decide if you would rather "continue" or not. And no one, absolutely NO ONE, should be obliged to do what they don't want to, no matter what others may think.
You should read his books. They are good, and Camus won't stop on the dylemma: he presents arguments pro and against both decisions. Camus faces "self-shi" as the subject of his studies, yet he could say "I'm a Humanist, Kevin! Maybe the last Humanist!".

@@GeekNewzsuicide is justified whenever someone decides that life is not worth it for them personally. No one else can make that judgment for them and it goes without saying how dumb it would be to let dipshits like you be the arbiters of when it's justified, no one chooses to be born into this world and so everyone should be allowed to opt out if they so choose.

When I found this video, I put it to one side and watched the anime over the course of a couple of weeks, then returned to this video.
Overall, your video was much more thought provoking than the series itself.
I have a few problems with the series, one being the final conclusion being oversimplified to where I almost outright disagree with it, and another being that no legitimate argument was ever made in favour of the bad guys (if you're effectively having to hypnotize everyone to make them agree with you, clearly you don't have a convincing argument).
That being said, I love your video on it, and I'm glad you pointed me towards this anime.
I especially love the nuance you revealed in the underlying message, regarding how good and evil have to coexist.

I feel like this is a very potent subject for this day and age. Sowing seeds of doubt is so easy to someone who doesn’t have much experience or wisdom or knowledge. The guy wants to die to give his heart to his child? That would give the kid a year or two maybe five If the transplant is perfect and the child’s body accepts it perfectly. Heart transplants are not an answer but it’s the best we can do sometimes. That child needs his father to care for him more than his father’s organ which will not last very long. The kid would get his life a bit longer but he’ll be alone when he dies. Sad either way but education on the subjects to be chosen is so important.

Then I brought up that what about self shi and how it is neither morally good nor morally evil as we don't know what's going on in a person's life to lead to that point. There was someone who counter argued about the morality of abortion which I argued that it doesn't give the person a chance to have a good or bad life.
There was someone who committed self shi that year. For a week straight I was hated with pure malice through that school because of that paper.

Then you asked of us viewers "who enjoy the themes discussed in the video" to lend you a hand for the obvious reasons. My suggestion is that you replaced the idea of "enjoyment" for "engagement". Because I think it sounds odd to "enjoy" this topic, but I can understand and back up to be "interested", "curious", or "intrigued" by it; as well as what this series is about; and what you have to say regarding it.

Makes me think of the plot of Castlevania Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow where the antagonist (Celia Fortner ?) says that for Good to live, Evil must always be present, thus resurecting Dracula each cycle.

A recent live action Japanese film Plan 75 deals with some similar themes, very touching I found it, very humane, not working on the spiritual level so much as how the new law effects different people emotionally - it does look carefully at the idea of the value of life though

this political thriller stuff about how politicians and the news media present reasonable exceptions to things that used to be inexcusable is a little bit too much like real life politics, haha. This was a very thoughtful video, and it's made me evaluate my own feelings and thoughts about nihilism. I find nihilism comforting to an extent, and not in a suicidal way. I grew up in a cult (Mormonism), where every step of life was dictated. How I dress, what words I use, how I use my body, when and what I eat, who I marry, how I spend my money--it's incredibly controlling. And the purpose of it all is to achieve Exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom, which is the highest level of Heaven in LDS doctrine. Many people are afraid to leave the LDS church because if they do, what are they living for? What is the purpose of life if there's nothing beyond it?
When I realized it was all a con (Joseph Smith was literally convicted of fraud, and his cult was just another way for him to extort money from his followers and gain access to vulnerable women and children for his own sexual gratification), I realized that what happens beyond life doesn't matter. I have my own personal beliefs about it, but I can't know for sure, and it really doesn't matter because if there's nothing beyond, I won't know. If what happens beyond doesn't matter, and this life doesn't matter, then that means I'm free.
I am free to act according to my own conscience. I am free to determine what that means and to change my mind, and grow, and regret, and atone, and do better, and decide what ALL OF THAT MEANS. I don't have to act according to a moral code that makes me sick to my stomach (I am trans and queer, and Mormon doctrine, like many conservative Christian doctrines, performs psychological and sometimes physical violence on us), acting in what I am told is "right" in fear of an eternity of torment when my mind and heart and spirit are telling me that it is WRONG. I am free to examine that cognitive dissonance and strive for a better way, even though I may fail. If there is no innate meaning to life, then I am not bound to it; I create meaning in my own way, and I am happier now, with no certain answers, than I ever was with a "God" who made questions obsolete.

I have to strongly disagree about the series,
1st off the criticsm about Makase having supernatural powers burns away the core of the arguement in Itsuki's debate, to delife based on free will or based on the "needs" he presented. And it's done so clumsily that it's frankly insulting to the viewer.
So what was the point of the debate (I'll get back to this) and investigation when it wastes the viewers time?
    2. Makase's arguement about what is good/evil is far too simplistic as it narrows people into 2 shades white or black but most people are actually grey of various mixes of the 2.
It's like trying to debate with a teenager who poses life questions on the internet which I can assure you, whatever answer Makase recieves, she would just not accept it because she only does it to get a kick out of people as she does to the Main Character, which most teens who pose such questions are not looking for answers but to gain validity in their beliefs.
    3. Back to Itsuki's debate, I can argue that Itsuki never need to get on this platform, he can just do it anytime without the exposure if he was really wants to, there are various ways... (of course I won't explain it here) if he really cared about not prolonging the suffering of his young son. And he wouldn't even need to expose he did intentionally de-life himself. (there is a stated law about using de-life self would make organs transplantation not prioritized to the person the giver wrote in their statement).
But here's the crucifix of the consequence of this law, what prevents from it being abused?
If you didn't know in Canada, they have now voted to recommend assisted de-life for the disabled, instead of using state funds to support the disabled. That also includes people with PTSD, instead of recommending mental health services. It is always the vulnerable being targeted 1st.
Japan's discussion was even being plagued about mass assisting de-life on old people as argued by the economist, Yusuke Narita to save tax funds, nevermind that the answer that stares at everyone is to just tax the rich. (Instead the poor and retired Japanese are now taxed 20%, when previously they were taxed about 10%). Of course it doesn't end there as Narita also argues that medical surgery that saves people from terrible pain, also wastes tax funds (as stated by his fans as they watched his livestreams).
Itsuki never assures anyone because no one seems to challenge him on this even though, assisted de-life have a huge opposition within the majority of the medical community nor do the show ever tries to have professionals in mental health. When we are shown time and time again the LDP party (ruling party in Japan) does not care about the people to the point Japanese people do not have any hope in their government that they're so apathetic about politics.
Another part that is not mentioned but slightly shown in imagery, the commonality in the 60 people or even the people shown to be attracted to Itsuki's proposition, that they are never from upper class families. And then use US politicians (to avoid legal disputes from using Japanese politicians) AKA the rich as the deciders of people's fates...and the rich cannot seem to understand basic fundamental ethics and needs to have a long debate over it. Unfortunately this too is massively simplified as many politicians particularly in the US would much rather severely underfund mental health (and even health care). Nevermind there's a long dark history of sterilizing POC in the US...POC would have every right to fear for their lives if such a law is passed.
In Belgium, after just legalizing in 2002 about just 7 year laters statistics, 32% of assisted de-life were found to be involuntary.
The series also does not mention the cause and effect from self de-life, that it affects people who knew the de-lifer. Studies have shown that such people in assisted de-life are more likely to do the same, plagued by depression. Within a few years. So then, does it really benefit anyone?
I can also argue that this exposure, harms Itsuki's young son because many in Japanese society isn't going to look at the young child fondly and would call the child cut-throat for using his father...
    4. Trying to make a great villainess...based on...forced coitus. Sigh this is such an old tired trope. Nevermind the forced coitus is not about carnal desire but about control and humiliation while presenting carnal desire as sin in the show. It feels like the novel came from the 90s but nope the 2010s. Disappointing.
Overall, the show is more like the musings of a teenager barely exposed to politics or even philosophy.

But Death isn't evil and Life isn't good. It's about Chaos and Order.
I understand why it's disturbing, as most people don't see things the way I do, so I can be afraid for society, but personally, this anime, as you've presented it, doesn't make me challenge any of my beliefs at all.
