Moved to Brisbane 10 years ago, first visited 13 years ago. Love it here. When I go back to the UK to visit, after a couple of days I get home sick and need to get back to Brisbane!
I’ve been a Queenslander, mostly Brisbane, all my life. Travelled Australia extensively stayed with friends in most capitals of all the states. I think the further north you travel, the friendlier people become. We are a nation of people who are pretty blunt and we do enjoy “taking the piss” out of people. ❤️ from Q Australia 🇦🇺.
Sounds about right Jay!
I grew up in Brisbane and, like many of my friends, couldn't wait to leave. 'Boring Brisbane' was its usual nickname in those days. Some friends returned, many didn't. Though I admit it has improved somewhat since then, I still wouldn't visit it at all if I didn't have family there.
I did leave at 21 and have lived in diverse places, including London and Melbourne, and only once returned to live whilst I was at university. Other family members have also since moved away, including my parents upon retirement, with only one sibling's family now remaining there.
Of course, many people love Brissie and will not relate to my reasons for leaving but, for a start, I find it definitely too hot and humid for half the year. Despite now being a larger city, it still lacks sophistication and a wide range of cultural choices. The arts community does its best but offerings are limited and most international acts and shows do not go to Brisbane. Traffic is appalling, with endless roadworks as the Council never quite catches up with the increasing population.
Shopping is also limited mostly to chain stores, as it doesn't yet have the population to support a lot of private retailers. For most Brisbanites, the casual dress code is part of its appeal but I enjoy the chance to dress up at times. Most restaurants will still accept diners wearing only shorts and t-shirts.
After years away, I have finally returned to Queensland but NOT Brisbane! Being no longer interested in city life, I am now up the coast a bit, so can drive easily to see family. Summer months are still too hot but I find them more bearable nearer the beach with the sea breezes.
i have lived my entire life in Brisbane and don't plan to move its such a wonderful place its not to crowded but its crowded enough to feel protected i am glad you chose Brisbane
Thanks bud
I moved from Sydney to Brisbane as a 16 year old with my family. Been here 34 years now. I thank my parents for the decision they made everyday. I laughed at your comment about Bali .The wife and I are headed back there in September and we can't wait to see our friends that live there.
Everyone loves Bali
Nice one Ross. Finally made it. Into my second week being here and I’m nothing short of happy to be here. Great city and so much to offer. People need to come here!
Glad to hear you made it!

Always enjoy your videos Ross! Well done .. I’m happy that you and your family are loving your best lives in Brisbane!
Cheers Helen!
I spent my late teens and 20’s and 30’s in Brisbane - my all time favourite city. I’m in Canberra now and I’d love to be back in Brisbane - I go there every Xmas as my family are mostly there - I miss it. 1980’s Brisbane was culturally and politically really interesting.
I ❤ Brisbane and I'd have to say it's probably one of the most walkable cities in Australia. Like European cities everything in inner Brisbane is easily reached by foot. In Melbourne for instance you need taxies in order to get about because everything is spread far and wide. In Brisbane everything is fairly close. In terms of nightlife there are literally hundreds of places all within walking distance in the Valley for instance. Brisbane is very concentrated, which is why Traffic can be so bad. Narrow, organic street layouts that favor pedestrians aren't so good for traffic movement and Brisbane does not have the wide sweeping multi-lane 'strodes' that Melbourne or Adelaide do.
As an urban planner I'd say one of the hardest things about working in Brisbane is maintaining a balance between Brisbane's traditional laid back culture and and the changes that come with population growth. Maintaining that easy lifestyle is the key to Brisbane's success and what sets it apart from other cities.
Great knowledge thanks
But at least Melbourne as the incredible tram system- I absolutely LOVE visiting Melbourne! Even just to get around the CBD is free, say if you're heading from Southern Cross up to the library, or out to the museum, or the Old Gaol or theatres......love 'em! Love that they criss cross around the place so you can pretty much get anywhere. They'll need a somewhat of a smaller tram network in Brisbane once the CRR opens, and they decide to finally make the CBD pedestrian only, given it's hilly.
Happy Easter to you and Sam and hope the Easter Bunny finds Aurora 🐣🐇
Thanks
Brisbane is Rugby League at Suncorp Stadium, Cricket at the Gabba, People watching over a coffee in the Queen St Mall, A Ferry Ride, Fireworks on the River, a Coffee and Desert at Mt Cootha, A Meal at Breaky Creek, a Hand or two of Black Jack at the Casino,. But best of all, when you've been away for a long time, it's the place you call home.
👍
lived in brisbane for 24 years now, me whole life. And it's a great place, I took public transport all the way to noosa once and it cost me like 10 dollars. we have the best beaches and the best zoo in australia, as well as the best theme parks and some of the best restruants. have great musem and awesome art galleries. A inner city beach and many many gorgous parks. plus like the buy said we are a great hub with amazing day trips all around, mount tamborine, the gold coast and sunshine coast. heck even toowomba and warick are pretty close if you want to vist the countryside.
Agreed
Oh wow so you’ve been to Cairns that’s were I live .That was a good one Ross enjoyed that .
We loved it up there
@@ThatJohnstonLife Glad you enjoyed your time here I’ve lived here all my life . It’s a great place to live I guess you thought about living here too . Oh well you will have to come back for a holiday it’s only a 2 hr flight .
Lived in Brissy for about 30 years, Qld for 40. Loved it. All my kids and grandies are still in Brissy. As good as any other city in the country.
Agreed
Looking at the Australia weather seems that Brisbane temps appears to run warmer than other parts of Australia!
She gets warmer the further north you go
Than the other Capital cities? Well, except for Darwin.
But hot for Australia? Brisbane is merely mild by Australian standards.
It may seem odd, but Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, even Canberra and Hobart can get much much hotter in summer than Brisbane.
The difference with those other places is you get relief from the heat. Except when we get La Nina weather (which is historically about once or twice a decade) there is usually no let up to Brisbane heat from October to April.
I've been looking into Perth but you've made me consider Brisbane. I'll start my research. Cheers Ross. Keep the videos coming mate 👍
Perth is lovely too I'm sure but very isolated
⬆️ what Ross said. Perth is nice, but there's A LOT of desert between them and the rest of Aus.
I like Perth, it's just Brisbane with a beach. But yes, it's isolated.
Perth is more for older retirees...
Probably Brisbane and Perth are the two most similar Australian capitals so it's more about if you like sunrises or sunsets
This dude is pretty cool, subbed
Nice work building from that video. Liked it.
Cheers
Ross you need to sit down and watch "the Castle" then you will understand the vibe.
yeah, Perth invested in a smart freeway (its still being upgraded) none of us are really sure why. Luckily I don't think we have had any deaths yet, but the install also started at the start of covid which cut a lot of the road traffic (wfh for the win) so maybe it works okay when the traffic level is lower (because then its more or less off lol)
I think they fail in the UK because people still don't read the signs
Love 💕 Brisbane each time i fly down from Cairns for a visit it’s getting bigger it’s very clean city love Southbank and joey’s coffee shop in Kangaroo point is the best
You're gonna start a coffee war
@@ThatJohnstonLife we got some good coffee shops in Cairns for a small Regional town
part of the reason traffic is worse than ever is, during covid, 50k people moved from down south to escape insane lockdowns.
it really cluttered a lot of places in QLD up.
I guess we need more roads then?
Glad you and your missus are enjoying Brissie, Cairns is better though. 15 yrs in Brissie 30 in Cairns. Love it here
Brisbane born and bred. Moved away eight years ago. City had changed too much too quickly. Then there are the crowds, the constant traffic and sound of traffic, the heat and humidity during most of the year which is like living in a sauna, and the air quality isn't great - especially when temperature inversions happen. Now live in a small country town on the tablelands. One traffic light. Air is fresh and clean. Almost no traffic. Brisbane was great when I was growing up, an overgrown country town - now it's just grown too big.
Glad you've found your happy place
"The vibes" is a The castle joke, watch it, it's good. My father came from Brisbane before shifting south and always described the difference as being that Sydney and Melbourne are cities and Brisbane is a large country town.
Will take a look
it's not like that any more. It's as much a city as the other two
@@queenslanddiva Dad retired back to Brisbane and whenever we talked on the phone his first comment was always," What are you living in that cold hole for". I live in Victoria.
@@michaelobrien5366 I'm living in country NSW now - it gets really cold here. I tell my kids I have the fire lit and they tell me that they're still in short sleeves (in Brissy). So yep, your dad's right! 🤣
@@ThatJohnstonLife you have to watch The Castle. its iconic..
There's not much to do in Brisbane tbh but thankfully there's a lot of Bubble Tea, Korean Chicken and the South bank markets are pretty good.
You should try the live music scene, many genres, lots of amazing bands, just be prepared to be adventurous
Lol- I grew up in the Beijke- Peterson corruption era so I'm a bit cynical- Brisbane is just a bloody concrete jungle, the Valley is a no-go zone and even Southbank can be a bit dicey (that may be my grandmother speaking though, she still tells me stories of how dangerous it was in the 50's!!!). At least now we've got some decent in fracture at long last coming online, with the new theatre at QPAC, and (new) Southbank, Queen's Wharf coming and the Cross Liz Purp Line- whoops, I mean Cross River Rail (watching too much Geoff Marshall here). I just wish they'd bloody fix the Bruce though and more decent public transport OUTSIDE their precious bloody 10km radius of the city!!
Thanks for the video. We are planning to move to Brisbane in coming months. How are the jobs? Can you make a video on finding the first job?
Depends on your industry but lots of people are calling out for them
Aussies are defo straight to the point
Some prefer it
no way haha you were my english teacher last year. good quality videos mate i wish you luck 👌
Ha ha. Nice one, hope work is going well for you
@@ThatJohnstonLife yeah I’ve been doing decent. Got an event rental company going
There should be another episode, but in the Valley (Fortitude) 🤗
Come to Brisbane 🤙
Brisbane is arguably Australia's most progressive city. Always been pro development and it's shown by the construction of accommodation and office towers in the last decade. 100 story plus skyscrapers. Many with outstanding architecture. Shopping in Queen Street Mall is very good and there's a good range of cafes and restuarants in the CBD. South Bank is brilliant to escape the CBD just across Victoria Bridge, a short few 100 metres to a range of attractions including Art theatres, gardens including the edible one in the Epicurious garden, a ferris wheel and an artificial beach with nice landscaping including a fun park for the kids and more. A State of the art library as well. The Botanic gardens on the edge of the city is great for a break from city life. Large areas of lawn to relax on and like all botanic gardens in Australia its free. Check out the Roma parklands and Mt Cootha BG's in suburban Toowong also.
Then the Brisbane Festival in September. Nice mild sunny weather. Held mostly on South Bank and the final night's fireworks display is excellent as barges along the Brisbane river are loaded up with fireworks then set off of buildings as well.
The negatives are the 4 months of heat and high humidity. Stifling 23C nights to 34C days. It's oppressive.
Traffic is congested but not as bad as Sydney. SE Queensland is the fastest growing part of the country and the population and high density living has stressed the infrastructure but will be helped by the plans mentioned. It will take time though.
If you can stand those 2 things, it's the city to be in.
Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne are the more conservative cities. The first 2 would be more suitable for Brits regarding culture and be the easiest to progress to due to this fact. Adelaide in particular has a lot of British influence and is the most conservative city of all. Easy to get around. Cheaper to live in and has the best festivals (music, fringe, arts) and beaches. Great botanic gardens and the best education facilities with renown Universities. Beautiful climate for 5 to 7 months and cool to mild for 3 months. Can be cold in June and July though by Australian standards (not by English standards though!!). It just matters how much heat you can bear and how much cold you can deal with. It does get quite cold at night in Brisbane in winter but days are mild and sunny often in the low 20's.
Where is this development?
@@Josh-is8it Think I’ve answered that 1. Forgot the casino too. Even if not into gambling will be state of the art complex. $3 and half Billion gets you that. There’s a reason that it’s the fastest growing region in the country and I’ve named a few here. Unfortunately the infrastructure has not quite kept up with the growth.
Great video, Brisbane is beautiful, but Melbourne is home.
Home is where you want it to be
Hi guys, are you glad you couldn’t afford to live in Sydney or Melbourne or would you prefer to if money wasn’t an issue?
Hahaha the banter 😂 Sydney is 100% way better if you're in your 20s and want an actual night life lol. Its also a much faster pace here but I do love going to Brissy for a wee holiday. But the food here is outstanding and it is far more diverse in Sydney than Brisbane.
Can't wait to visit properly and try the food
Did you hear about the Sydney nightclub lockdowns?
Melbourne led the way for nightlife pre covid. Sydney still can't get it's head about the whole small bars and clubs thing, and Melbourne is the top sport for theatre and the arts.
Sports? Melbourne has more big events (Tennis, F1 to name a couple) but Brisbane has more of the sporting codes continuously at a high level. Sydney? NRL and Union, with one decent AFL team. The difference is how passionate Brisbane people are about their sports. Sydney people are more passionate about instagramming being at an event than actually being at the event.
Melbourne's top for food too. Sydney pips Brisbane in that regard, and at the very top level Sydney and Melbourne run pretty level, but those next tiers down it's Melbourne all the way.
Sydney does have the best beaches though. Hands down.
Lived in Brissy since 1980 , the public transport leaves a lot to be desired . I wouldn't say it's total crap , but it can get pretty awful at times and needs an overhaul . Brisbane is not my favourite Capital city in Australia , but I did notice the friendliness of the locals when I first came here and it eventually rubbed off on me . I still live here , so ............
Can't be too bad then
@@ThatJohnstonLife Oh , there's definitely way worse places to live , of that I'm sure. Some of the places I've visited have been eye opening.
Try LA or Auckland then.. #1000xworse
Can't believe u've been 2 Cairns but it wasn't even on ur radar 2 move 2. It's not that isolated fr e'thing- there's an international airport & it has pretty much e'thing u'd find in a major city + heaps more 2 do. (U can't bungy jump in syd)
My 7 year old could not stop laughing at your comments on this one Ross!
The “vibes” 😂😂
All about the vibes
Love the video but found it disconcerting when your little head was facing off-screen. How about moving it to the right so it feels like we're watching the video together?
Hey Ross, as a single male late 20s moving over do you recommend living in the city centre ?
It would be good fun
Hi, I've been living near Brisbane (Logan) for just over 30 years, I've never lived anywhere else.
How's the crime like in Logan. Has it increased, become noticeable or not something that ever cross les your mind.
when you coming to melbourne?
I love Brisbane
Us too
more food reviews mate
Will get onto it
Brisbane is better than sydney. Spot on there.
Unless you like opera houses
...... did someone just say the public transport was GOOD???? Compared to WHAT? I lived in Brisbane for ten years, just left recently. One of the most hopeless things about it was the public transport.... three busses and a train to go two kilometres and you could walk it faster....
I'm to old to "vibe" as well😆
Wonder what the cut off age is?
30 years now stuck here england
Can't you unstick yourself Mark?
Are you going to respond to my challenge to attend the Dawn Service and attend the march A.N.Z.A.C. DAY ?
Will check my diary
I’m in the process of getting my visa sorted,I’m a bricklayer from Ireland is it worth the move?
Absolutely Deet
It’s a scary move,I’ve to do technical test now and English test and have emailed a few companies to get some feedback to see how needed bricklayers are,I’m aiming for Perth, love the Chanel mate gives great insight.
We have a big shortage of tradies here. YOu should have no trouble finding a job anywhere in Australia.
I watch your videos man very good
Been many places, but Brissie is always home
It's my favourite place I've ever lived so far
Hello Ross, my daughter lives in Brisbane, do you know her?
😆
It's got so much to offer. It has a Macdonalds and KFC.
That's about right.
If you couldn't be happy living in or close to Brisbane, I doubt you could be happy living anywhere !
Sure thing Steve
That perth guy SOUNDS like he is from perth as someone from perth I hear a lot of people who sound just like him.
Bloody Pertherners
Hey Ross
Hey Michael
The north of England where I'm from people say hi 🤣🤣🤣
If only it wasn't so cold
@@ThatJohnstonLife Very true, that's why I'm emigrating to Oz 😜
Brisbane is better than Sydney or Melbourne because it's not Sydney or Melbourne.
😄 🤣 😂
It's all lies. Brisbane is a terrible place to come to. Definitely go to Sydney or Melbourne instead. They're bigger, smellier and more crowded. Why would you want to come to a clean, relaxed place like Brisbane?
Sydney and Melbourne will always be superior for those reasons
Good live music of a lot of different genres, so many good local bands, 4ZZZ
Brisbane and the Gold Coast have changed dramatically in the last 2 decades. I wonder what the city will be like during and after the 2032 Olympics. I mention both cities cause living here they just feel like the same place. You can easily spend the day at the Gold Coast going to sea world or movie world or whatever and then be having drinks under the story bridge latter on.
Living in Brisbane , from London. Traffic for a city, is nothing compared to something like London, so stop moaning people! Brissie is the best city; Sydney to big 'n' busy. Melbourne to cold. Brisbane has it all 👍👍 and for the humidity...pft you get used to it, and will then moan when its 18c. 😂
Melbourne is not cold enough
Brisbane. Delusional. 😮. I’ve been to and or lived in every state capital and Perth is by far the best city in every respect.
Queensland has more people than Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory combined. No matter which way you look at it Queensland is part of the big three states. No matter which way you look at it, South East Queensland is part of the big three urban centres of Australia. No matter which way you look at it, South East Queensland's combined domestic and international tourism is almost equal to Melbourne. No matter which way you look at it, if you consider current airline trends (pre pandemic) South East Queensland will soon be Australia's number 2 tourist destination after Sydney, and Queensland will soon be number 2 state destination after New South Wales. If you don't like the lifestyle in South East Queensland or the attractions we already have, and have planned, you have mental issues. Elderly people consume tea, coffee and bikkies, I don't know why anyone would want to go down to Melbourne to see grey heads do that. Come to Queensland where everyone is young and fun.
No. Hahaha 😆
Girl in an Aussie accent says 'People are a little bit rude here', then he says if you're not 'used to Australian humour'
lol what a load of nonsense he's just making it up as he goes along 🤮
Construction siteS 😂😂😂
