Mexico City is also home to the oldest Spanish building in all of Latin America: the medieval chapel and cloister that are now part of the Instituto Cultural Helénico. Both were purchased by William Randolph Hearst who had them taken apart piece by piece and then transported from Spain to the USA. When the crash of '29 hurt his finances, he left the many boxes in which they were stored unopened in a warehouse in New York. After his death his family sold the chapel and cloister to a Mexican collector who then had them taken to Mexico City and carefully reconstructed. Check them out when you can, they are truly beautiful!
