I started to get back problems in my late 40’s and it’s been down hill ever since. I am now 65 years old from Scotland. I have watch you both since the beginning. Coal here in Scotland is the way to go. I burn both hard wood logs and Anthrasite, this keeps the log burner burning all night in the winter months.
I have a multi stove that can burn both. Make sure your stove is okay to burn coal as it reaches a far higher temperature than just wood.
Thanks for all the great viewing over the years.

I would do the rain water catchment into IBC totes and then pump to the tanks. Easier and cheaper than trenching. Coal is great heat. Better than wood for longer burns.

Good call on simply using the pallets whole. Cut your time down significanly and was much easier option in the long run. They look good on the shelter and will supply the necessary ventilation needed. Nick, you think it's bad at 39 - add 35 more years to that and then you'll really feel it 🙁 That was great of Jackery to send you the 2000Plus setup and and the extra battery pack!! I could sure use one and I'm envious 😛 Good job you guys. Have a good week. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

I have been using water catchment system for 17 years, we don't drink the water or cook with it. We use it for duties around the property and showers and have no problem except for the weather not helping us now and then. We buy water every 2 months and get 4,500 gallons, calling for water delivery when we get down to about 1,500 gallons in the tank. My tank holds 7,000 gallons. The cost of the water is $180.00 for 4,500 gallons from well water in our development.

I live in wv. Coal is a mainstay for a lot of people. Coal stoves gives off a lot heat. You must have a good filllter for it because it is dusty. It is also a very dry heat. My dad had a warm morning stove in our home. Usually you could fill the stove up before bed time and it would last all night . Some people in our area still use Coal furnaces.

Nice use of pallets, where I am (BC Canada) the wood sheds I made are open front and back. This is so I don't have to endlessly move wood around to get at the seasoned wood that will be at the rear of the pile. Coal is an okay fuel source but it can be really messy and smelly depending on the quality of it. Coal can burn at much higher temperatures and can damage your wood stove, you can get multi-fuel stoves. Coal would be a great choice if you ever decided to install a outdoor boiler style of heater.

Shed and woodshed look great. When we lived in western PA a lot of folks including us, would burn coal in our stoves since it was very readily available. Our property also was covered in oak and cherry, so endless supply of firewood.
Be careful with the coal - most stoves aren't capable of burning it due to the heat it generates. Most coal capable stoves have a firebrick liner, not just something that looks good, but true refractory brick. Coal is also dirtier burning than wood, but the coal ashes are great on icy driveways! Since moving to Utah, I haven't seen coal for sale, but that may be because St George doesn't get cold!!

The pallet choice 2.0, was a good one. Your wood will have good air flow to dry. And, the pallets will stop most if not all snow from coming in the shed. The boards you did get to disassemble, would work better than the plywood for the front 3' or so, if not the whole floor, That way you won't have to worry about the plywood coming apart, where some snow will blow in and get the floor wet.
Coal does burn long, and it burns hot. I doubt your woodstove is rated for that much heat. Even if it is, everything around your home will get black soot on it, and, it doesn't have near the appealing smell that burning wood does.

When I seen the pallets, that is what I thought you were doing and then using the single that you broke off to 'fill' the space between so no snow would get in so your wood would keep dry. However it came up way better that I thought, great work guys! What happened to all the chickens? Did they die in the cold? They weren't enclosed like last year.

You can burn coal but you might need to put some kind of grate in the bottom of Your wood stove. Coal also make what they call a clinker and then You can just put the remains on Your road. Do not use any of the ashes if You burn coal on any garden projects. You will need to find what they call lump coal not soft coal..Utah has a few coal mines that have the hard coal or what we called lump coal, the softer coal or slack coal was used in furnaces. When I was a kid in the late 50's I would shovel out a stock truck full of slack coal for $2,00 but that $2.00 would buy a lot back then..See if You can find some of the lump coal and try it and as far as a grate goes for bottom of stove goes You can make one out of rebar if You have to. One reason for the grate You need to have air come in under the coal for it to burn good. Like Your site a lot...

I find it depressing that a person needs a ""Permit"" to catch and store for future use the rain that falls
out of the sky. God gives us rain for free so how is it that someone or some corporation can actually
""Charge"" you for what God gives you for free. I understand safety codes and such are to protect us
but still it gripes me to have to pay for something that comes to us that is actually free in the first .....
