    Today, loyal Theorists, in MatPat’s final Film Theory, we’re looking at a very important topic: boy role models. Here’s a test. Think of five AMAZING characters in kids entertainment who kids could actually look up to in a positive way. We’ll wait… Betcha could hardly come up with one. And that, Theorists, is why we’re here to discuss this issue today.

    I never thought about it until now, but Mr Incredible. Yes most of the movie shows him as distracted and focuses on his mid life crisis etc. But in the montage, it shows that as soon as his life picks up and he gets better, his immediate priority is also to reconnect with his family, sure it shows the training, but the movie actively goes out of it's way to show us that he's not normally like how he has been

    • @logantimothy5202
      @logantimothy5202 Месяц назад +16

      I like your point! Even with the montage, he's technically still lying to his family, but it's definitely a start, and the rest of the movie is him continuing to grow. I mean, how poignant is that part where he tries telling his family to stay in the van because he's not strong enough to lose them again, and how he accepts her gentle correction that if they work together he won't have to worry about that.

    On the opening but about father figures, an important detail about Iroh’s character is trying to be the father to Zuko that he wasn’t to his own kid, hoping that if he gave Zuko this advice and positive role model that he wouldn’t die looking for approval. He’s come to terms with his own failings, and wants to make sure Ozai’s don’t spell Zuko’s downfall

      I don't actually know if you could say Phineas and Ferb were actually disobeying their parents anyway?? Yes they did built a rollercoaster which their parents probably wouldn't approve of if they knew, but they were never ever told "Don't build a rollercoaster". It is not directly disobeying if no order was ever made. They probably did not even think their parents would disapprove - in fact in some episodes Candace is like "I'll show mom what you did!" and they're like "Perfect! I'd love for her to see this!" before the invention is made to disappear by the typical Doofenshmirtz plot which they didn't even intend for.

    Overall, I agree with the topic of this video and it is a sad reality, but we can't pretend that Luke Skywalker from Star Wars is just a "violent male." His solution to the end of the conflict was actually a refusal to fight the sith Lord or his father.
    Same with Aang from Avatar. Aang never wanted to fight the Fire Lord. He also spent some episodes resolving conflicts using means other than fighting.
    Still, I respect that Film Theory is covering this subject.

    • @braynjohnson4302
      @braynjohnson4302 2 месяца назад +24

      I agree. I appreciate that he’s breaching this topic but saying Captain America/Luke/Spider-man can’t be a good role model because violence is involved is ridiculous unless you’re talking only kids under about age 10.
      Violence is a real thing in the world (and way more prevalent in other parts of the world) and if good capable people sit and do nothing good incapable people will be hurt and taken advantage of. With great power comes great responsibility is a very important thing to learn.
      Also how about military dads? I know plenty of people who have great role model dads who were in the military. Are they not good role models because they had to use violence?

      @@braynjohnson4302I’m pretty sure he is literally thinking about kids under the age of 10. Static shock has an amazing male lead with good morals and respect towards others.
    Every time he makes a mistake, he acknowledges it and actually does a good job of apologising and better himself.
    The father was also a good father.
    The show itself teaches good values, including real-life problems and empathy.
    Tho I'd only show this show to a child when they are between 12 and 14.
    Depending on how good they can take in such strong real-life issues.
    The show doesn't water down real-life problems for kids and so shows them directly how serious and bad life can be.

      I wanted to recommend the same show, as well as to someone try 2000-2015 PBS cartoons, they seem to fit in to what I want to teach the next generation at a decent pace with shows like Arthur, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Curious George with good primary and secondary character male role models as well as educational content that teaches you and makes you think for yourself like cyber chase, dinosaur train, sid the science kid, and clifford, etc... but you have to watch them off air mostly nowadays apart from rare reruns and I find it sad, but what content that's there still holds a candle to what I expected from those shows watching them back then.

    As a father of a son myself, I really appreciate you sharing this. The general state of the attention and support we are giving to boys is something that is often on my mind, and this covers many of my thoughts and concerns perfectly. Thank you.
    And as a father of both a son and a daughter it was especially great to see the results of the Lego study you shared. I've seen that in my own kids, but it was nice to see the study better explain what I've seen.
    And most importantly, thank you for providing your own short list of good father figures. I agree with the whole list, but Bandit and Mufasa were the only two I thought of myself. (I especially love Bandit as because _I_ get to learn from him as I watch with my kids.) It is _scary_ just how hard it is to find good, strong male role models for our sons as well as our daughters.
    Thank you. (Even if I don't wholly agree with _everything_ you said in the video, they are just details, and the overall theme I agree with. Boys need better role models too!)

And in one episode their mom finds out and doesn’t care. This is not a dream, like Candace’s dream where her parents find out and send the boys to boarding school. Their dad even knows and is fine with it. Please show Ollie Phineas and Ferb. I was raised on it and it is my favorite kids show of all time.

    I will die on the Phineas and Ferb hill. They are NOT disobeying their parents. Dr. Doof whisks away the evidence of what they were actually doing, so their parents think they did the normal kid version of things instead of the over the top creations. The backyard beach, for example. They tell their mom they made a beach in the backyard, but by the time she gets home there's only a sandbox left. In the episode where they actually do get busted for making a flying car, the boys are confused why their mom is upset bc they had permission to make it. It's all a big misunderstanding throughout the whole show. They are not disobeying!!!

He also accepts the fact that he lost his leg and finds ways to embrace and live with his disability by finding ways to work with it.

    I'll tell you this much, I grew up watching every "violent" cartoon you can imagine. The only thing that truly matters in a child's upbringing is the parent's involvement. I was able to distinguish between right and wrong because my father told me so. I obviously can't give my life story, but kids don't grow up to be what they watch on TV, it's what they watch their families do in front of them.

    • @thatonepossum5766
      @thatonepossum5766 2 месяца назад +27

      Yeah, I watched MCU and Star Wars since I was at most 8 or 9, and superhero cartoons since before that. But I don’t resolve conflict with violence, because my parents taught me not to. My brother doesn’t either (well, except ONE time, but it was necessary then). Media is important for teaching kids about the world, and about morals, but the parents pretty much always override whatever Spidey says.

    Dr. Doof should have a great dad title. He was honestly never a bad guy, just a guy with lots of childhood trauma who wanted to be appreciated, both by Vanessa and the tri-state area. Thankfully, Perry showed appreciation for him, then Norm, then Vanessa, and (if you’ve seen Milo Murphy’s Law) virtually the entire universe became appreciative of him. He became someone important, something better than the leader of the tri-state area.

      Which brings up a good question and one Mat didn't really cover. Those male characters are dumb or aggressive or mean because they are expressing themselves. Sometimes people. Especially children don't know how to express themselves. You dont get a male like Uncle Iroh from the last Airbender until you have gone through suffering. Until you let out all your emotions from your trauma. And some of these characters are doing just that. They are expressing their emotions in order to understand what they want to be. So to say there are no good male roll models in media because they are these things actually belittles his child and the characters. Because even his son at a young age knows he should watch Phineas because they are breaking rules and might get into trouble. But Matt should have explained why they where doing so in the first place. Their goal was to enjoy summer. To enjoy life. And you are missing the point of shows when all you see are men fighting and killing each other. Because the world isn't fair and sometimes you need to understand the hardtimes earlier in life so it isn't harder to go through later in it.

It’s not that there aren’t any good male role models, it’s that, majoritly women, don’t see the role model's that are beneath them, and only see them as violent, destructive characters, which they wouldn’t have watched as kids because that isn’t what interested them.

    6:19 Princess Bubblegum is not as good of character as you present her to be. In the final episodes of the series. It’s her who’s running to war. It’s her who is making the mistakes and being angry over all the things her uncle has done. Finn is the one who tries to settle things peacefully. Sure he fails to do so, but he couldn’t have known the glitter was just Gumbald’s dumb dumb solution. And when you take a step back and look at all the things that PB did to her gum family, it’s pretty heartless. She left them as dumb candy people rather than trying to fix them. She spied on her own candy people for decades or even centuries. She has lied to her friends about who she is and what she does. Yes there is good she has done. But ultimately when the final battle comes, she’s the one who runs towards it. Not Finn

    The missunderstanding of batman from Matt patt is painful considering he trained all the robins to be recorcful. Also he sends the message that batman is meant to just be cool and strong. In my personal favorite batman storyline, Batman the Long Halloween you see more focus being put on the strategy in stoping the serial killer Holliday and the thought required to stop Holliday. You also see him across the years being defined by his trauma. For example after the death of Jason Todd you see the next robin trained in a way that priorities safety and recorcfulness. But also, Batman is not a good role model

    Somebody brought up Hiccup being a good role model, and I would like to add Stoic. Despite being stubborn and set in his ways, he shows he can admit when he's wrong and change his ways and to trust and support his son. He is a single father who raised his son from infancy. In the second movie, he cries and dances and sings with his wife. He takes care of and protects his family without taking away from their agency and trusting their own capabilities completely.
    And while I do agree that Httyd is not for very young kids, and while Stoic does have some nasty flaws in the first movie, it is just as crucial to show that people can and do change.
    But hey, that's just a theory. A FILM THEORY!

When it gets to the end of the series with the big fight, where everyone says he has to use violence to put down Ozai, potentially even killing him, that he's naive for thinking otherwise... Aang says no, refuses to compromise on his morals of pacifism, and though he does fight in the end, it's almost entirely on the defensive, and he resolves it in a nonviolent manner.

    Like he is literally the most lawful good character, unlike batman and other heroes Spiderman isn't cruel and brooding he just does what he believes to be the morally best action in any given situation. Not only this but he is still learning and navigating the world as a teenage while learning from his mistakes every episode, he always does what he thinks is right even when the whole world is against him while at the same time not taking anything too far. Like Spiderman literally went to a hospital and played games with a kid who was terminally ill at one point in the show, he even showed his face to the kid to show that anyone can be a hero, it doesn't get better then that.

In fact, every time an adult authority figure gets involved in whatever they are doing, said authority figure is an enthusiastic participant. Their father, the grandparents, etc. They have implicit or explicit approval of their general activities from basically everyone that is aware of them except Candace, and Candace isn't ever the *ultimate* authority, even in instances where she's put "in charge" it's generally contingent upon some incredibly unlikely emergency scenario occurring first, so they're not even expected to obey her in the first place since the parents trust them to behave themselves even in the absence of adult supervision.

    aang is a great role model for young boys. he’s kind, smart, fights for what’s right, and matures a great deal as the show progresses. 12 year old aang, as a person, is what i wish i could be right now, as a 19 year old. he’s also one of the few male characters in a show that contains violence that is very much against it. he avoids violence and physical confrontation as much as possible and even when he does get into fights, he always evades or blocks and very rarely, if ever, attacks unless he’s in the avatar state, at which point he essentially doesn’t have control over his body anymore anyway. he even figured out a way to defeat ozai, an absolute psychopath, permanently without killing him despite everyone, including all his past lives, telling him he would have to. he’s a great role model for anyone of any age, but especially young boys since they lack good role models like him in media

    I have the opposite answer to the question about good male role models. My mother always had trouble with a couple episodes of Bob the Builder. Bob himself is a pretty good role model from what I remember, but she noticed multiple instances of secondary characters lying or stealing and experiencing no consequences. The example that stuck out to me was the one where the pumpkin guy finds another character's lunch that they had been looking forward to eating later. The pumpkin guy eats most of the food and makes a mess, and doesn't own up to it when the other character discovers the theft. Then there was the episode where Bob and the gang were hired to install a front walkway for an old lady who didn't want to move her lawn sculptures. The machines break the tiles and damage one of the statues while screwing around, and Bob lies to the lady about why her statue looks different. The show tacitly told me that Bob could lie because he was the protagonist and that the pumpkin guy could steal because nobody saw him do it. So, not great

      True, while I agree with pretty much all the things said in this video, I disagree with the indirect claim that Phineas & Ferb is not a good series when it comes to teaching a kid valuable morals & lessons. I mean, the morals of this show focus more so on the concepts & ideas of learning how to think independently, do things by yourself, and use your creativity for problem-solving rather than to create perfect role-model characters. And as you already stated, Phineas and Ferb are not even trying to intentionally lie to their parents. I mean, as far as I remember, they told their parents quite often what they were doing. They just never believed them due to that being the main plot of the show.

      @@CasualTheEvil was it the “WHO ASKED + MY CONTENT BETTER” type comment? Thankfully it’s gone now, but yes, those are all definitely bots. They don’t actually gain anything from them since nobody ACTUALLY says “huh, okay, let me check out this aholes content!” Lol
      Just keep ignoring and reporting em and theyll get bored

    FINALLY someone talking about this!! I think the first time I realized this was as a kid growing up with the Berenstien Bears- my dad never liked how Pappa bear was always kinda just the funny or angry one and it made me sad as a kid.

    I have an 18 month old son, and Bandit is my husband's role model. I cant wait until my son is old enough to introduce him to Uncle Iroh
